Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Books are my comfort food!

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

How stupid are these people?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

So many bastards, so little time.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Republicans are stupid

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

Looks like the entire roster got raptured except me. Let’s see what easy blog material the GOP is providing today.

* Looks like maybe the Cuban government planted that fake story about Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and prostitutes to keep his Cuba-hating butt from chairing the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. Apparently they had an easier time with useful idiot Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller than they had shopping it around to any real news outlet. Smart move on their part if you ask me; the GOP media rarely double checks before kicking off one of those circle jerk feeding frenzies.

* Mississippi just certified that Thad Cochran won his primary. It would be a lot to ask losing nutjob Chris McDaniel to deal gracefully with Cochran counting on on an awful lot of black folks to vote for him as the lesser of two morons, and so far signs are not good. Refusing to concede, McDaniel sent staffers to hunt for “invalid” votes in the very same courthouse where his staffers found themselves locked inside the night of that first primary vote. The effort to not say something explosively racial must be eating the poor guy and his staff alive. McDaniel’s fight would look lonelier and a lot more hopeless without the support of gadflies like Ted Cruz and the Senate Conservatives Fund for whom this kind of cause is irresistible catnip.

Discuss.

You forgot the silliest one. “The downright moron the prophet H.L. Mencken famously foretold” calls for the President’s impeachment as incoherently as only she can.

Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, “no mas.”

Speaking of stupid Republicans… I posted this earlier today but this is the more appropriate thread. Pulled up behind a car at a stop sign today and saw that the license plate was “BENGHAZI”. WTF?? Car was from NC and driving on a little street in Maine. Honestly what would possess someone to do such a thing??

They are stupid about lots of things, like reality and the facts as discivered by science, but they are also as sneaky as a Fox about voting and manipulating the voters.

We can never lay back and expect to win because we’re correct, because they will be out there sneaking in late at night, and lying about us to everyone they can grab. We need to work to keep them out of the chicken coop 24/7 !!

So the battered wife is spanish speaking? Doesn’t sound like the kind of US citizen who is objecting to lax enforcement of immigration law. Roberto Duran?

McDaniel: This is going to be a nothingburger. Cochran has released his study of election rolls and shows maybe 100-300 suspect votes at most. finding ~5000 will be a challenge for McDaniel.

Not content with leaking anthrax, Obama misplaced smallpox

ATLANTA (AP) — A government scientist cleaning out an old storage room at a research center near Washington made a startling discovery last week — decades-old vials of smallpox packed away and forgotten in a cardboard box.

The six glass vials were intact and sealed, and scientists have yet to establish whether the virus is dead or alive, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday.

    – and of course, Gov. McCrony and his puppeteer Art Pope.

Actually, in the case of McRory and Pope, they are not stupid at all. Pope is a predatory uber-wealthy ideologue in much the same mold at NC state-level as the Koch brothers are at the national level, and funds an xtreme economic-libertarian think-tank (the “John Locke Foundation”) analogous to the Koch’s “Americans for Prosperity” and to a fair extent, a more general hard-core conservative think-tank (“Civitas”) analogous to the Heritage Foundation. McRory used to be that rare bird – an actual “moderate” Republican from the big-corporate business wing of the party (he was a long-time upper-level executive at Duke Energy) who had considerable respect across the aisle, and who served for fourteen years as mayor of Charlotte. However, after his ambitions to move up to governor were frustrated in 2008 (in part by the longstanding jinx Charlotte-based politicians have suffered in N.C. trying to move up to statewide offices or the U.S. Senate) – McRory sold his soul to the devil, via his agent Art Pope in order to get the enthusiastic support of the hard-right (and Pope’s financial support) in the 2012 election, in return for which McRory made Pope his Budget Director and all-around close advisor as governor.

I have conversed with someone who worked for years closely with McRory on Duke Energy’s legal staff about how shocked they were at McRory’s dramatic political transformation in 2012 from the person they thought they knew for many years. In summary, McRory can’t even take a shit without getting Art Pope’s permission on when and in what bathroom or outhouse.

Israeli authorities say Khdeir was part of a group of youths who attacked police.

“From what I understand about the facts of the case, this is not just an innocent bystander who was pulled off of a schoolyard,” Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer, told “Fox News Sunday.” “He was with six other people. They were masked. They threw petrol bombs and Molotov cocktails at our police. Three of them had knives. … That does not excuse any excessive use of force, and our Justice Ministry is opening an investigation.”

But State Department officials questioned Dermer’s remarks.

“They are investigating whether he was throwing rocks,” another senior State Department official said. “Even if he was, the question is, was this the right response to that? Obviously we don’t think so.”

    Republicans are stupid

There are enough ruthlessly smart Republicans to allow them to keep winning. In 2010, Ed Gillespie, launched operation Red State to use the CU decision to flip state and local races. There’s a good article from the New Yorker about how Gillespie courted Art Pope to use his money so Republicans could gain control of the NC legislature in 2010.

There are plenty of grifters and scammers on the Right, who make some noise to raise some money from the rubes, but there are too many – for my tastes – still ruthlessly clever folks working for the GOP.

One critique I heard about Bush v. Gore, was that Gore’s lawyers were meticulous about laying out a process to fairly decide the election. Bush’s lawyers were about saying whatever it took for their guy to win.

That ruthlessness to win at all costs permeates the Republican Party more than it did in 2000 and it will not get moderated, unless they are soundly defeated again and again.

@…now I try to be amused:

Back when I was in college, there was a guy who must have lived pretty close to the NCSU campus, because I’d occasionally see his car around. He had “ARAGORN” for this license plate. NC is pretty easy to get custom plates and most of it seems to be more interesting than “BENGHAZI”.

I’m still trying to get my head around on the recent story:
“Coal Rollers” are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. … “rolling coal” has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.”

    Here’s some stupid.

A coal plant-owning Kentucky Republican offered an out-of-this-world argument against new EPA carbon emissions regulations.

State Sen. Brandon Smith (R-Hazard) joined other lawmakers in attacking the Obama administration and EPA regulations July 2 in a meeting of the Interim Joint Committee on Natural Resources and Environment.

“I won’t get into the debate about climate change,” Smith said. “But I’ll simply point out that I think in academia we all agree that the temperature on Mars is exactly as it is here. Nobody will dispute that. Yet there are no coal mines on Mars. There’s no factories on Mars that I’m aware of.”

While there are no known coal mines or factories on Mars, the average temperature on Mars is significantly colder than here on Earth. The average temperature on Earth is about 57 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average temperature on Mars is about -81 degrees Fahrenheit.

Smith, who has been elected to the Kentucky Senate twice and elected four times to the state House, was joined by other lawmakers who questioned the science behind climate change. “All this stems, this carbon capture, all this other stuff, it stems back to a scare, generated years ago about global warming,” said state Rep. Stan Lee (R-Fayette County). “Finally it turned out there hasn’t been global warming in 15 or 20 years, then they changed the name to climate change.”
