Remember James O’Keefe and Project Veritas? Here’s his latest shocking expose, as he dressed up in an Osama bin Laden mask and was guided by a Texas wingnut Sheriff across the border to demonstrate how easy it is to cross the border. I’m not making this up:

Apparently a trip to Texas and a bin Laden mask are very expensive:

This video is humiliating politicians into action. American can no longer accept that there isn’t an illegal immigration crisis and that the border is secure.

To complete this investigation, Project Veritas spent over $74,242 in legal fees, investigators salaries, and travel expenses.

We are now BEHIND in our 2014 election investigations. Please help me replace these funds. Our entire 2014 election plan depends on it.

    He was guided by a wingnut sheriff/whiteman-coyote? How the hell does that prove a “broken border”, unless he’s pointing out that wingnuts and other border security people can be bought if you have the correct race/currency/exact change?

    I hope O’Keefe manages to separate many wingnut fools from their money. O’Keefe will squander it on laughably stupid, ineffective, self-agrandizing shit-videos like the above, and his donors will have that much less to contribute to wingnut politicians. Win-win!

    @StringOnAStick: I couldn’t make myself watch the whole thing, but from what I can tell O’Keefe flew with a wingnut sheriff to some remote part of the border and then panned the camera around to show there were no Border Patrol in the area and therefore it was a “broken border”. Of course, when he panned around he didn’t show any Mexicans either and I assume he didn’t catch any actual “illegals” crossing the border or that would have been the lede. So he basically proved that the Border Patrol is wisely not wasting resources manning remote parts of the border that nobody would ever try to actually cross.

    Weirdly, in his “six mile” trip from the river border to I-10, O’Keefe’s video never shows him crossing the well-patrolled road that runs parallel to the river, the multiple irrigation canals, the well-maintained parcels of farmland, the two-lane Highway 192 (also called “Esperanza Road,”) or any of the other obstacles that stand between the border and I-10 in every place there isn’t already a permanent outpost. (You can see them for yourself on Google Maps.) Although, at one point, you can see miles and miles of truck-tire tracks in the dirt around O’Keefe and West on the U.S. side of the border, where they’re talking about how desolate and unprotected it is.

    If you believe that, I know a pimp who has a border-crosser’s Muslim prayer rug to sell you.

    honest question… is there any border, anywhere in the world that actually has a fence? I mean, I’m guessing that if you’re out in the hinterlands of Ireland you can probably pass from Northern Ireland to Ireland and back without much trouble. Same if you’re moving from say, Russia to Mongolia and on through to China (insert Great Wall joke here).

    ETA: ok, I’m guessing there’s probably a fence of some sort between the Koreas…

    The funniest and most profound part of this is where the sheriff says, “They’ve got plenty of agents; they just need to put them on the border.” Because BY DEFINITION every part of government is already too big and spends too much money. So even if you think the Border Patrol should have agents posted every five hundred yards, day and night, it couldn’t possibly be the case that they would need more people. That just doesn’t compute.

    I grew up in West Texas. One of our regular Boy Scout trips was a river raft trip down the Rio Grande.

    We would stop on either side of the river depending without regard to the border.

    Note that he’s with the Hudspeth County sheriff. That’s the same Hudspeth County that’s 650 miles from the western edge of the Rio Grande Valley, where most of the immigrants are crossing.

    Why didn’t he go to the Rio Grande Valley? Because law enforcement there have repeatedly told vigilantes to stay away from the border. That area doesn’t need a bunch of armed-to-the-teeth racists swanning around in an area that’s 95 percent Hispanic.

    Exactly. I’m far more familiar with that part of the world than O’Keefe will ever be, and the area is desolate desert wilderness. The cost to build all this infrastructure, to import people into the area for security, and to maintain that infrastructure, would be enormous. And for what gain? Illegal immigration from Mexico has been flat since 2008. Our recent “border crisis” is a child refugee crisis. And for that, the wingnuts’ reaction has left me deeply ashamed.

    I’ve decided that my entire argument for border-paranoid loons from now on will be “Take your Berlin Wall and stick it up your ass.”

Hadn’t thought about her short story in many years and was stuck with how vivid her imagery was/is and still sticks with me. I remember fondly many debates in Catholic school over what she meant. It was very formative for me. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
