Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

“woke” is the new caravan.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

How stupid are these people?

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Stand up, dammit!

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

When I was faster i was always behind.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Thesis: Rick Perry is a fundamentally honest man who is just too dumb to understand ethics.

Paradoxically, getting indicted moved him from 8th to 6th in the latest straw poll of likely GOP primary voters. HE'S A MARTYR, they explain

— norbizness (@norbizness) August 15, 2014

Being indicted will help Rick Perry in 2016. In fact, not being indicted will end up being a seriously liability in the GOP primary.

Big ups to @BobbyJindal for being only @the_RGA chair in recent years who isn't under indictment/investigation!!! #2016 #Momentum

Latest I’ve slept in the past 10 days.

I’m loading the car with scuba stuff and driving to the hinterlands so I can go through dry suit training in a 45-50 degree set of thermoclines in an unusually deep quarry lake.

There will be some aspects of suck to this, but mostly fun.

A few weeks ago I found out I needed glasses. Mom saw me with them the first time and said to me, “those are Rick Perry” glasses. Both funny and pissed me off.

In case no one saw/heard, it’s final.

Incumbent U.S. Senator Brian Schatz has narrowly won Hawaii’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary.

After the first special election printout which included 800 ballots from Maui, Schatz has 115,397 votes to Hanabusa’s 113,628.
    [snip]
Out of the 6,782 registered Puna voters who could have voted today a little more than 1,500 actually went to the polls.
    [snip]
Earlier Friday evening, approximately 800 uncounted mail-in ballots from Maui were discovered. Scott Nago, the state’s chief elections officer, says the missing ballots were discovered during an election audit. Source

    And the most ludicrous tidbit:

A second and final printout is expected later tonight, but will only consist of eight votes and is not expected to change the outcome of the race.

The GOP will do what the GOP does. I am much more worried about our nomination process. Who will we select? If we go on to select the person mainly based on a perception that she/he is powerful enough to win in the general, what does he/she actually believe in? What will be the hard-fought domestic priorities? Will we have a process that allows the citizens on the ground to inform the nominee about the desires of the non-elite voters?

It’s not about them (the GOP). It’s about us.

Re Ferguson: The always interesting Slate Political Gabfest recorded an “All criminal Justice” edition on Thursday. The Brown case is just a starting point as it move onto related issues. This was recorded Thursday, so it is not up to date, but since they focus more on background and similar issues, the record date is not a big problem.

Abbott: No, The Band is playing third. Guess Who is playing first.
    Costello: Who?
Abbott and Costello together: They’re playing second!
Costello: Let me try again. The band plays, right?
Abbott: Right. Of course The Band plays.
    Costello: So who is onstage?
Abbott: No. Why should Who be onstage if The Band is playing?
Costello: Who is onstage while the band is playing?
Abbott: No, Who is backstage while The Band is playing.

    Costello: Who is playing last?
Abbott: No. Who is second. Yes is last.
    Costello: Who?
    Abbott: No, Yes.
Costello: Do you have a contract from the band that’s playing last?
    Abbott: I do. Yes.
    Costello: So it’s who?
Abbott: No. I already told you; Who is playing second.
Costello: The contract is signed by who?
Abbott: No. Why should it be signed by Who?
    Costello: Who signs it then?
    Abbott: No, Yes signs it.
Costello: This is nuts! Guess Who’s on first, Who is on second, the Band is on third, and Yes is on fourth!
Abbott: You finally got it right!
Costello: I don’t even know what I’m saying! Forget it.
    Abbott: Forget it?
Costello: Right. I’m not going if you won’t tell me who’s playing; and if you say they’re playing second, I’ll sock you one!
Abbott: OK! OK! So what will you do instead of coming to the concert?
