Where the cake joke came from, ICYMI.
Apart from obvious jokes being obvious, what’s on the agenda today?
raven
A high of 63 and a thrashing of Vandy? Priceless!
Dolly Llama
@raven: Dawg! I think we beat the hell out of Vanderbilt today. Otherwise, what a fantastic day of football. Who do you like in the Tennessee/Florida game? I hate to say it, but I believe Auburn and Alabama both win theirs. The aTm game looks interesting. And for the first time since I got to the Triangle, I’m going to be interested to see how the Wolfpack does, but that’s probably just because of how surprisingly well they did last week — that and it’s against my former employer.
raven
@Dolly Llama: I’m thinking the Vols LSU and Bama win. Hokies got the Heels so we’ll se what happens to the weird turkeys!
Dolly Llama
@raven: If the Gators lose today, do you think Muschamp makes it to Jacksonville? I don’t know if you’ve ever hung out at Swamp Gas, which is a Gator comment board that actually ain’t bad (it’s not GTP, but it’s not Stingtalk, either), and if they’re a representative sample of the fanbase, man, shit’s grim in Gatorland. I know it’s a big “if,” but I’m thinking Foley’s hand might get forced given another shitty loss or two.
Dolly Llama
@raven: And I’d be curious to know your take on Hutson. I think if he doesn’t shine at least a little today, they need to seriously consider sitting him. He seems to be a DGD, but bless his heart, he looked like shit last week.
OzarkHillbilly
Missouri is being forced to dip it’s toes in the 21st century by favor of a Jackson County judge (probably related to that ni**er loving Harry Truman) who said the state has to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. (we’ll see how long that lasts)
Meanwhile, near the terminus of the Missouri River on the other side of the state, in the most northern southern city of the Union, the powers that be seem to think Bull Connor had the right idea after all for how to handle those troublesome darkies…. (just look at that pic)
Myself? I am going to enjoy the sunny 58 degrees we have in store for today, by mixing and pouring some more concrete, then to the shop to work on the mantle and some shelving so that the wife has someplace to put some of the stuff she brought back from her parents.
…….
Oh, and I almost forgot, CARDS WON CARDS WON CARDS WON!!!!
raven
@Dolly Llama: I just don’t know, will having the 2 receivers back be the cure? All the talk on GTP about his arm being hurt worries me. Maybe Saint Mark has been sandbagging but, then again, if he is I’m not sure this game is the one to roll out they real deal. Shit is fixin to get serious a Mizzou and Arky.
raven
@Dolly Llama: That scares me because my GA-Fla tix won’r be here till monday and, if they lose, I may not make a decent buck off the tickets.
I gotta take a car close to downtown so the princess doesn’t have to come get me after the game.
Dolly Llama
@raven: Damn straight on Mizzou and Arky. I know Mizzou is the bigger game in terms of where we stand in the conference, but Arkansas scares me worse in terms of just suffering a straight-up embarassing ass whipping.
Mustang Bobby
The Tigers are heading home to Detroit after getting the beat shit out of them in the first two games of the ALDS. (My kingdom for a bullpen.)
I was up at 1:00 a.m. with acid reflux (great dinner, though, so it was worth the Gaviscon) and watched Bill Maher on TiVo, which included an interview with Elizabeth Warren. Money quote: “I want my country back… from Wall Street.”
Now it’s time for cereal and hope the rains let up enough for me to get out and clean up the yard.
Raven
@Dolly Llama: Better take em one at a time I guess!
Raven
@Mustang Bobby: There was a kid at my fav eatery the other day with a pristine 74 Mac 1! Copper with flat black hood scoop and foil. I’m a Chevy dude but it was sweet. He said his dad gave it to him.
OzarkHillbilly
@Mustang Bobby: My line has been, “You can’t have your country back, the Koch brothers aren’t selling.”

Time to bring in the basil and rosemary to preserve them for a few more weeks…42 right now and expecting a high of 52 today. The wonderful fall weather we’ve been enjoying for the last couple of weeks had to end sometime, and yesterday was it. Other than that, housecleaning and preparing to paint the master bedroom – spousal unit is on vacation next week and that is her goal. Can’t blame her, since we bought this house in 1998 and it hasn’t been done in all that time, but I must say that if there’s one task associated with interior decor that I really detest it’s removing wallpaper. We already had one sort-of-dispute about it; she didn’t want to rent a steamer (Allah knows why) and I said I wouldn’t do it without one. I won, if being appointed as sole wallpaper remover counts as a win – using a device from which you are gua-ran-teed to get several burns not ranking high on my list of favorite activities.
Aside from that, enjoying fall weather….pity that every Division I football team in our fair state, with the exception of those Hibernian ballbusters in South Bend, is as usual completely sucky. I’ve been reading reportorial speculation about “is this finally the year for IU football” for decades, and can always safely say no, it is not.
Baud
@Mustang Bobby:
More like the anti-money quote, amirite?
Mustang Bobby
@Raven: Sweet rude. Nice dad!
In 1973 my dad told me to sell my ’65 fastback because it would never be a collectible; they made too many of them. Today in top shape they go for $30K. I love my dad, but…

Also, too: more proof (as if it were needed) that the guy with the second most perfect hair in politics, Mike Pence, is dumber than a barrel of hair. Um, Mike, buddy – guess which choice people will make every time if the choice is between making a twenty five dollar copayment and buying groceries.
I do know all too well that you don’t have to be a genius to be elected president, considering the history of the Cheney Regency and the reign of St. Ronnie. I don’t know how it is that all these Republicans who sound like they’d be hard pressed to fog a mirror can look in that same mirror and see presidential timber. Sweet tidy bowl Jesus skipping across the blue water, Lindsay Graham? I ask you…
Tenar Darell
@danielx: It’s not just Republicans. Unfortunately there’s too many people who don’t understand that if it’s a choice between eating or getting an ID just to vote with + $50 (birth certificate & and DMV trip) then there is no choice.
jurassicpork
My agenda? Not starving. Our SNAP benefits were indeed cut off without explanation and at the worst possible time. Details are here with an update.

They say we’re getting our first frost tonight, so I guess I’ll be bringing the rosemary, thyme, parsley and chives inside. Only getting to the mid-50s today.
Couldn’t get out of my driveway last night due to being blocked by traffic for the haunted trail at the Humane Society across the street. Looks like we’re stuck in the house all weekend every weekend until the end of the month.
OzarkHillbilly
@Tenar Darell: I’ll bet most Republicans understand that perfectly.

I’m going to haul out my winter bike and make sure it’s ready to go. Which means I better haul out my cold weather cycling clothing and go for a ride. I am so not ready for this weather yet.

Yikes….just remembered that today is wedding anniversary. Gamesaver time! Actually sort of the second anniversary, since I got divorced from and remarried the same person on the same date twelve years apart. Kind of like the definition of hope over experience, but it’s all good…
WereBear
@geg6: I feel for you… all summer we had road construction in front of our house. All summer. Just finished.
Shakezula
The answer would have been Pilates in the morning, food gathering activities in the afternoon, but I went back to dance class Thursday night after a 2 month break and I can barely hobble around the house for the damn leg cramps.
Maybe if I lay on my stomach the cats will come stomp on ’em. If not, someone will have to bring me food.
chopper
so far the fast is easy. Ugh.

Okay, here is a question for all of the BJ cat experts. My recently diagnosed FIV+ 9 year old Mikey is now severely anemic. Has anyone experienced any success with blood transfusions and/or prednisone? I don’t know whether it will stress him more to attempt these or just let the disease run its course. We don’t know how long he has been FIV+, but he was just diagnosed in June. He also has Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome and I don’t know if those medications are making the anemia worse. Any suggestions are most welcome.
OzarkHillbilly
The irony. It hurts.***

@Anne Laurie – I think I am missing the joke.
big ole hound
@OzarkHillbilly:How bout those Royals. Three extra inning wins. I’m sure there is talk of the I70 series.
WereBear
@sacrablue: I’m so sorry.
Predisone is supposed to help with both conditions. If it were my cat, I would move forward and see how he tolerates procedures. Some cats realize the treatments make them feel better, and they are pretty cooperative.
For some cats, I agree, the vet visits, discomfort, and indignity make the game not worth the candle.
Unless you already know how your cat responds under such circumstances, you’ll just have to see.
One tip: do explain it to him. Use body language to underscore your words. Put emotion in it.
Remember, cats give points for effort.
sacrablue
@WereBear: Thanks for your advice. The vet wasn’t hopeful at all. From the blood test yesterday, it appears that his bone marrow isn’t producing red blood cells. I didn’t get the sense that the vet thought his marrow would start working again.
Mikey is usually completely freaked out going to the vet, but yesterday he just didn’t have the energy to put up a fuss. He is still eating food if I put it under his nose and he still wants to sit in his chair on the patio. I’ve been awake all night with him. I think he is sick of me being the typical Jewish mother (Are you hungry… here, eat something). I guess I will call the vet and tell her to get the prednisone ready.
Uncle Cosmo
@Mustang Bobby: And if it was worth $2,000 in 1973 dollars back in 1973, then by hanging onto it for the last 41 years you would have earned a whopping 2.5% annual return. Not counting finding a place to park it out of the weather & doing the necessary maintenance. Your dad was smarter than you think.
WereBear
I doubt it :) {}
I bet a blood transfusion will perk him up. See how it goes… but with dysfunctional bone marrow it does sound discouraging long term.
We can only do our best. And it’s enough.

@sacrablue: Lil Bit (a dog) has Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. We used Atopica (cyclosporine) to keep in under control.

A mostly forgotten clever little nugget of a whodunnit on TCM this Sunday at 8:15 a.m. (ET), Green For Danger.
Alastair Sim infuses the role of a slightly off-kilter Scotland Yard detective with mordant whimsy. To a modern audience, the film may at first come across as pokey, even stilted. But stick around for Sim to show up and thenceforth steal the show.

I’ve just finishing up some research on Amway & Mary Kay and related MLM scams.
I’ve concluded that the whole Republican Party is now a pyramid scheme. And a cult.

@danielx: Front page article in today’s local rag: “Graham to Float 2016 President Bid”. Well, we know all too well that shit floats…
Iowa Old Lady
@WereBear: I like that theory. Like cult members, they have to believe and block out anything contradictory. There doesn’t seem to be a charismatic leader though, thank god.
WereBear
@Iowa Old Lady: Oh, yes, there is. It works even better when he’s dead! (Saint Reagan.)
However, you are totally right in that the current leaders have a charisma… absence.

Today, gotta get my ducks in a row and cook, cook, cook dinner for our regular Sat. night gathering. May be as many as 16 people there tonight.

@Anya: You’re not the only one. Thought it was just too early for me , but what links to what first and what’s the final joke? Everybody else is talking about football.
Has anybody heard from Violet lately on BJ? She sounded so down a couple days ago.

@Mike in NC:
I’d like to see him run. We haven’t had a presidential candidate invoke the spirit of John C. Calhoun in a long time.
Josie
@shelley: No. I have been searching on each thread and have not seen her.
Violet: If you are reading, let us know how you are doing.
delk
@danielx: Congrats! We are celebrating 15 here today. Sort of second anniversary too because we are only three years legally gay married in March.
WereBear
@delk: Congrats to all!
I love this time of year, but got married in August because college and a wedding would have been a bit much to manage.
Lucky 13 here.

14th ranked Liverpool finally managed to score against #10 West Bromwich Albion. Nice to see the underdog make good.

I’m at Florida Southern College’s library right now trying to get some writing inspiration going to get a short story finished (I reeeeeeaaaalllllyyy need to sell more ebooks, I am facing some financial issues).
It’s the campus where Frank Lloyd Wright designed some of the buildings. During my walk up to the library (one of his) I went under covered walkways. Damn, Frank must have been a short mofo ’cause those walkways had 6’2″ clearance. If I hiccuped I would have given myself a concussion.

I’ve noticed a lot of weddings taking place in October. Is that the alternative month to June or something?

I believe the joke is that Preibus was too stupid to actually add the link to his Tweeted message. I’d bet this was a templated Tweet that he was just supposed to paste in and send, but he failed to follow all of the directions.
This reminds me of when Ari Fleischer got all worked up and sent a complaining Tweet that it was unfair that Twitter was letting Obama use more than 140 characters. He soon thereafter Tweeted a retraction saying he’d forgotten the @name part didn’t count.

These are instances of people thinking that they’re adept users when, really, they’re incompetents. Silly and pathetic.

On a tour of Wright’s establishment at Taliesin West (Phoenix), I just had to ask the tour docent that very question, as most of the buildings (beautifully designed as they were) seemed to have been constructed on 7/8 scale. I got a glare for my pains, but also an answer: 5’8″.

A friend asked me if I felt that a Jew would ever be elected. I told him that we’d get a woman or gay or lesbian before we’d get a Jew or Atheist. He didn’t agree. I said that the first question asked is always “What CHURCH do you go to?” They may consider gays or lesbians devilspawn but at least they go to a church.
Agree or disagree?
