Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

This really is a full service blog.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

    @raven: Dawg! I think we beat the hell out of Vanderbilt today. Otherwise, what a fantastic day of football. Who do you like in the Tennessee/Florida game? I hate to say it, but I believe Auburn and Alabama both win theirs. The aTm game looks interesting. And for the first time since I got to the Triangle, I’m going to be interested to see how the Wolfpack does, but that’s probably just because of how surprisingly well they did last week — that and it’s against my former employer.

    @raven: If the Gators lose today, do you think Muschamp makes it to Jacksonville? I don’t know if you’ve ever hung out at Swamp Gas, which is a Gator comment board that actually ain’t bad (it’s not GTP, but it’s not Stingtalk, either), and if they’re a representative sample of the fanbase, man, shit’s grim in Gatorland. I know it’s a big “if,” but I’m thinking Foley’s hand might get forced given another shitty loss or two.

    Missouri is being forced to dip it’s toes in the 21st century by favor of a Jackson County judge (probably related to that ni**er loving Harry Truman) who said the state has to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. (we’ll see how long that lasts)

    Meanwhile, near the terminus of the Missouri River on the other side of the state, in the most northern southern city of the Union, the powers that be seem to think Bull Connor had the right idea after all for how to handle those troublesome darkies…. (just look at that pic)

    Myself? I am going to enjoy the sunny 58 degrees we have in store for today, by mixing and pouring some more concrete, then to the shop to work on the mantle and some shelving so that the wife has someplace to put some of the stuff she brought back from her parents.

    The Tigers are heading home to Detroit after getting the beat shit out of them in the first two games of the ALDS. (My kingdom for a bullpen.)

    I was up at 1:00 a.m. with acid reflux (great dinner, though, so it was worth the Gaviscon) and watched Bill Maher on TiVo, which included an interview with Elizabeth Warren. Money quote: “I want my country back… from Wall Street.”

    Time to bring in the basil and rosemary to preserve them for a few more weeks…42 right now and expecting a high of 52 today. The wonderful fall weather we’ve been enjoying for the last couple of weeks had to end sometime, and yesterday was it. Other than that, housecleaning and preparing to paint the master bedroom – spousal unit is on vacation next week and that is her goal. Can’t blame her, since we bought this house in 1998 and it hasn’t been done in all that time, but I must say that if there’s one task associated with interior decor that I really detest it’s removing wallpaper. We already had one sort-of-dispute about it; she didn’t want to rent a steamer (Allah knows why) and I said I wouldn’t do it without one. I won, if being appointed as sole wallpaper remover counts as a win – using a device from which you are gua-ran-teed to get several burns not ranking high on my list of favorite activities.

    Aside from that, enjoying fall weather….pity that every Division I football team in our fair state, with the exception of those Hibernian ballbusters in South Bend, is as usual completely sucky. I’ve been reading reportorial speculation about “is this finally the year for IU football” for decades, and can always safely say no, it is not.

    Also, too: more proof (as if it were needed) that the guy with the second most perfect hair in politics, Mike Pence, is dumber than a barrel of hair. Um, Mike, buddy – guess which choice people will make every time if the choice is between making a twenty five dollar copayment and buying groceries.

    I do know all too well that you don’t have to be a genius to be elected president, considering the history of the Cheney Regency and the reign of St. Ronnie. I don’t know how it is that all these Republicans who sound like they’d be hard pressed to fog a mirror can look in that same mirror and see presidential timber. Okay, here is a question for all of the BJ cat experts. My recently diagnosed FIV+ 9 year old Mikey is now severely anemic. Has anyone experienced any success with blood transfusions and/or prednisone? I don’t know whether it will stress him more to attempt these or just let the disease run its course. We don’t know how long he has been FIV+, but he was just diagnosed in June. He also has Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome and I don’t know if those medications are making the anemia worse. Any suggestions are most welcome.

    @sacrablue: I’m so sorry.

    Predisone is supposed to help with both conditions. If it were my cat, I would move forward and see how he tolerates procedures. Some cats realize the treatments make them feel better, and they are pretty cooperative.

    For some cats, I agree, the vet visits, discomfort, and indignity make the game not worth the candle.

    Unless you already know how your cat responds under such circumstances, you’ll just have to see.

    One tip: do explain it to him. Use body language to underscore your words. Put emotion in it.

    Remember, cats give points for effort.

    sacrablue

    @WereBear: Thanks for your advice. The vet wasn’t hopeful at all. From the blood test yesterday, it appears that his bone marrow isn’t producing red blood cells. I didn’t get the sense that the vet thought his marrow would start working again.

    Mikey is usually completely freaked out going to the vet, but yesterday he just didn’t have the energy to put up a fuss. He is still eating food if I put it under his nose and he still wants to sit in his chair on the patio. I’ve been awake all night with him. I think he is sick of me being the typical Jewish mother (Are you hungry… here, eat something). I guess I will call the vet and tell her to get the prednisone ready.

    @PaulW:

    On a tour of Wright’s establishment at Taliesin West (Phoenix), I just had to ask the tour docent that very question, as most of the buildings (beautifully designed as they were) seemed to have been constructed on 7/8 scale. I got a glare for my pains, but also an answer: 5’8″.

    @jeffreyw:

    Man, that gray tabby looks like a thug. It needs an old-fashioned 1940s gangster name, like Lucky or Bugsy.

    @patrick II:

    A friend asked me if I felt that a Jew would ever be elected. I told him that we’d get a woman or gay or lesbian before we’d get a Jew or Atheist. He didn’t agree. I said that the first question asked is always “What CHURCH do you go to?” They may consider gays or lesbians devilspawn but at least they go to a church.

    Agree or disagree?
