Sorry for the lack of posts- Homecoming is this weekend and it is the 25 year one for a bunch of my brothers, so we have been racing around cleaning, cooking, and making sure there are ample places to crash. Figure I have room for about ten people, and then my friend Walt is taking couples in at his house.
Don’t forget, your chance to win Omaha Steaks is dwindling. Each ticket purchased goes to help defray the costs of insurance and mandated nationals travel. The drawing is less than 48 hours away!
I’ll check in tomorrow. GO PENGUINS!

Okay it would have been bad, very bad, crossing the streams bad, had McCain and Palin been elected, rationally I know this.
On a pure entertainment level though you can’t help but feel just a little wistful about what might have been. I mean, this could easily have been on the WH lawn.
It would have been like the Kennedys playing touch football with their extended family, except instead of touch football it would have been drunken brawls, and instead of the extended family it would have been with neighbors.
I don’t even know what neighbors there are, maybe people from 1400 Pennsylvania Ave.

Looks like WV did something right today – the state AG gave in and said they wouldn’t sue to stop same-sex marriage in the state.
Now, if only they wouldn’t elect Capito Moore in November…but that’s probably asking too much.
I am severely enjoying how the GOP is now scrambling to defend SD and KS in the Senate. I honestly think this is indicative of the bigger picture – the lack of good polling (there have been a lot of astroturf GOP polls, and even the ‘reliable’ pollsters have had some weird numbers this cycle) makes it really difficult to put where things really are.
There should be more horse-race posts now that we’re a month out, and maybe a BJ effort to raise some money for worthy candidates? I felt like there was more of that activism a few years back.

@Bill E Pilgrim:
Not to argue the basic point, but I would hope the Palins would only be at home at the US Naval Observatory, and never, ever the White House.

@efgoldman: I wasn’t actually wondering, it was an entirely gratuitous setup just so I could work in a joke about this.

That’s NCAA for you. Rape children and they’ll conceal, deny, excuse, and only do something about it when public pressure is impossible to ignore. Give an athlete a penny more than the rules say he’s allowed, and they’ll never forgive or forget.

@Roger Moore: It’s actually UGA that suspended him.

If one is an emotional eater… and does not address the emotional issues… one will continue to stuff feelings down with food. Perhaps. (I do not do Internet Diagnosis unless it is a kitty behavior problem.)
Thank you thank you thank you to the good Juicers who have donated to my blog cat-astrophe upgrade.
Which is that much closer to being solved… as this post is being read, I am being moved to a new (and more expensive) server. But that’s how much traffic I have been getting! (Note to self: must monetize.) In the meantime, though, I am dependent on the kindness of strangers… and not really strangers :)
Internet Diagnosis would make a good band name.

Rare event in Detroit moments ago. The refs actually penalized the Wings for interference. Haven’t seen that call made against Detroit in forever.
Roger Moore
@raven:
Sorry, but I can see the strings from here. UGA may have suspended him, but that’s because they know they need to throw the book at him or NCAA will throw the book at them. The prime mover in this case is the NCAA’s rules against paying athletes.

I made a good, simple chili tonight—or a chili-like stew, for you purists, since it did have beans in it—and then ate too much of it. Just tasted so good, and I hadn’t had any in ages. Now thinking about going to bed early. Although this week’s Agents of SHIELD got posted for on-demand viewing and is beckoning me.
I thought the NFL game would be good, but the Colts are up 17-0 already.
ETA: Okay, that’s it. The Colts just went up 24-0. I’m not prepared to wait around for the Texans’ snooze alarm to go off. And Agents of SHIELD will still be there tomorrow.

@Howard Beale IV: Thanks, but the problem wasn’t on my end. I’ve got enough traffic (with triple-weight spiking a few times a month) that my previous hosting situation just wasn’t up to handling. Now switching to one who can.
And is it me, or is this something my hosting company should be handling? If one of the customers needs more heavy lifting, shouldn’t they show up, muscles bulging, and offer to do so?

If they have any sense at all they would offer to take care of traffic spikes for a bit more money. Which is fair. The fact that they’re not offering to do something that would make them more money means they’re too lazy and/or stupid for you to deal with.

@lol chikinburd: That is wonderful news. Aside from the fact that I think that is blatantly unconstitutional, there is no way that municipal clerks could have rolled it out in time.

breaking news Supreme Court blocked Wisconsin’s odious voter ID bill from taking effect this election. Huge news as Walker was counting on disenfranchisement of tens of thousaands of UW students and minorities to help win his re-election.
Also, TX court threw out TX voter ID law and said they would consider arguments for making TX a pre-clearance state under Voting Rights Act.

I can’t say I am surprised. I’ve noticed that lots of companies that had pink items for sale with money going to Susan G. Komen have replaced them with another cancer charity in the past year or so. They did a lot of damage to their brand name with the PP boycott and are likely struggling to find sponsors to replace their lost sponsors.

@Karen in GA: Awww, thanks so much! Kisses for Iggy.
Ya know, if every person who visited the blog in one day donated ONE DOLLAR, I could finance the blog for the next year… be able to implement my Shelter Sorting Program which helps adopters get the right cat for them…. and turn myself into a non-profit foundation, which is my dream.
But I’m sure all that will come in time. Look how far it’s gotten already! I treasure the supporters I have, and won’t worry about the supporters yet to come.

BREAKING!
The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Wisconsin from implementing a law requiring voters to present photo IDs, overturning a lower court decision that would have put the law in place for the November election.

Not NHL, but sports (sorta.) In group play of the Euro 2016 qualifying matches, today was Ukraine at Belarus. The entire stadium spent most of the match chanting the now-iconic “Putin khuylo!” Note that that was in Belarus.

Maybe it was mentioned earlier, but looks like the governor of West Virginia today made same-sex marriage legal in the state to comply with recent federal court decisions. Nevada actually made it official yesterday as well.
Congrats, Mr. Cole! If desired, you can now officially get gay married!

I’ve often thought Black Velvet Elvis would make an excellent band name…some sleazy southern bar band, with twin lead guitars and a horn section.
There was/is a local rockabilly band called Bigger Than Elvis, with a lead guitarist/vocalist who is not only bigger than Elvis but may well be bigger than Graceland. A seriously big dude, who sings like Roy Orbison and plays excellent psychobilly guitar…
