Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

We still have time to mess this up!

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Welp – Sconny polls closed. I did a spit take when I saw the sample ballot this weekend. The “Independent” candidate for Guv is coincidentally named “Burke”. What are the odds?

NC is bucking the trend ever slightly, which shows that two years of meth-crazed full-on GOPALEC rule went down like a truckload of shit across the state. The gerrymander probably means they keep control of both houses, but a lot of GOPers losing state leg seats and I’m seeing good things in local races. We’ll see what happens with Hagan-Tillis.

No idea what’ll happen in WI, but I’ve only been able to perceive two possible outcomes. One outcome’s where Walker wins straight-up by 3 or 4 points. The other outcome’s much uglier, and also results in a Walker win — one by 4-3, in state Supreme Court, where the election is ultimately decided.

“This election is down to turnout” actually means “turnout, and shenanigans”. Republicans here are at liberty to pull anything, since anything that will get litigated will go to the aforementioned WiSCt, whose majority has displayed the inclination and the will to simply rewrite state law from the bench. Mary Burke was a much better candidate than I expected, but she had to come out with a lead that was clear of the margin of fuckery, and that was probably never going to happen in this cycle.

I’d like a lot to be proven wrong, but the closeness of this race merely meant that it had Prosser-versus-Kloppenberg written all over it.

Only possible surprise in MD – and I emphasize “possible” – would be an upset by the Republican (Larry Hogan) over Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown to succeed term-limited Governor Martin O’Malley. Thank goodness local media aren’t ginning this up to exaggerated heights just to attract eyeballs, presumably leaving that to national media types.

Early votes (EVs) have been tallied, and Brown has a big lead there. Today’s results are just coming in.

Take a look at his YouTube channel. E.g. in February 2013 – “U.S. Senator Mark Warners (D – Virginia) sees addressing our national debt as the nation’s most pressing issue.”

Hm, who else was running in 2008?

Fairfax County always reports in late (it got Jim Webb over the line) and while Warner probably could have done with a contest that was more on the radar than the DC press considered it, just to encourage turnout, we’ll see what happens there. The NYT Upshot guesstimate thinks that Richmond and Fairfax will do the job.

The question about Tillis was whether he’d try to take the McCrory route and present himself as a moderate to the suburbs of Charlotte and the Triangle or embrace the rural wingnuts. He went wingnut, more or less.

Welp, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted won re-election over challenger Nina Turner by a big margin. Sad.

    Jamil Smith @JamilSmith

“Everybody found it easy to vote and we made it hard to cheat,” said Ohio Secretary of State @JonHusted. Everybody? See my feed today.

In Ohio: vanishing from the voter rolls

“My father, who has voted in every election as long as he can remember, tells me his name wasn’t on the rolls this morning,” MSNBC producer Jamil Smith tweeted this morning. “He lives in Ohio.” After the Republican-backed legislature there (with help from the US supreme court) successfully blocked a same-day registration push for early voting, only to have a federal judge restore a last-minute Souls to the Polls drive, governor John Kasich is expected to roll to reelection in the ultimate swing state – already notorious for its voting restrictions.

    Jamil Smith @JamilSmith

My dad has lived at the same Cleveland address for 35+ years. Registered, Had his ID. At the correct polling place. Did nothing wrong.

Smith’s father found his name on the rolls at the local board of elections but “was really privileged today,” Smith tweeted. “[H]e’s able-bodied enough to drive, then walk, to the Board of Elections. So many other voters can’t do that.”

Smith told the Guardian of his dad: “He’s optimistic that he’ll be able to vote, so it should all work out.” (Update: it did.)

Not everyone in Ohio is quite so positive today. –Matt Sullivan (link)

There are a number of other voter problems reported at that Guardian link.

The NC BoE site is not doing so well, but Mecklenburg Co (Charlotte) is under 50% reported and splitting 60-36 for Hagen right now. Guilford (Greensboro) is at 40% at Hagen 60-39, Forsyth at 40% also. Wake’s mostly in, Durham’s mostly in. It’s a squeaker, but I think the votes are there for Hagen if the 60-40ish splits around Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem hold.

@Corner Stone: Zandar says watch GA and LA for timing on Obama’s executive orders on immigration, etc.

In other words, if you’re a fan of President Obama taking executive action on immigration, you should want Michelle Nunn to get 50% +1 tonight and obviate any need for a runoff. You should want Landrieu to win outright in Louisiana too. If both runoffs are avoided, then expect action sooner rather than later.

It’s political, yes. But that’s how this shakes out. That Georgia runoff especially would delay any action for at least two months, and you’d better believe the GOP will be running against OBAMNESTY the whole way.

In midterms? Yeah. There are two election cycles now: one where there’s a presidential election and Dems show up, and one where there isn’t and the people who hate the idea of government show up and the ones who are fucked off with dysfunctional government stay at home.

Two-year terms are stupid. I say that in a bipartisan way: I would sooner have the opposing party given four years to fuck shit up and be judged on it than the American system that makes it electorally rewarding to shit all over the basic concept of government because you can reap the rewards in mid-terms.

It’s clear that the Republican strategy of going full-bore negative attacks against their opponent does two things. First, it whips up their low-information, socially antagonistic voter base to get out and vote so that ‘rubber stamping, baby killing, liberal commie” loses. Second, the unending negative ads so offend the non- low information voters that they decide it’s not worth the effort and don’t go out and vote at all. It’s a win-win for conservatives; their voters get out and vote, while the other side stays home.

Here in NC, Hagan ran a campaign pointing out her support for veterans and her record as a moderate Democrat, while Tillis ran a campaign on “Hagan is an Obama rubber stamp that is ruining this country”. Hagan never tried to tie Tillis to all the reprehensible state laws he helped pass these last two years until the last week of the campaign. It should be obvious to everyone by now that negative ads work.
