Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Second rate reporter says what?

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Bark louder, little dog.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

This blog will pay for itself.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

No one could have predicted…

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

CNN called KY for Yertle. Any other results to share? Keep the faith, comrades! Good things can happen, such as the ouster of Rick Scott.

Will be interesting to see how the KY-Sen race turns out – everyone was gung-ho about their turnout operation, but it sure seems to have failed.

Capito wins WV-Sen. Thanks for nothing, Cole!

Also – too early to call in GA-Sen? Unhappy it’s only too ‘early’ – reports are that the AA vote was absolutely sky-high.

@PsiFighter37: yeah sigh. as I was mentioning in the previous thread everyone I read about this race predicted since last week that it would be a loss. Now reasons to be optimistic: the ground operations that are being touted as making a difference are Alaska, Colorado and Iowa so I have my fingers crossed :)

I freely admit, I am not a statistician of any kind, but it still seems weird to me that they would call the race for McConnell with less than 20% of the districts reporting in and fewer than 200,000 votes counted.

I know Manchin is an idiot, but why would a Dem blame Obama for the market forces that are killing coal. Is he just that stupid or what? Northern Pennsylvania is a wasteland of fracking sites, places are converting to natural gas because there is a surplus and it’s cheaper. It’s all about money and has absolutely nothing to do with government, although the environmental benefits are a bonus, I’m sure.

Really sad that Grimes didn’t run a better campaign. Really seems like hanging McConnell with wanting to kill Kynect would have been a winner. I never thought she would win though

4:50 PM PT: Charlie Crist may have coattails. Republican hopes to pick up FL-18 are dead, with Democrat Patrick Murphy winning GOP-heavy Martin County 56-44 with 61 percent in. CNN just called it, a Democratic hold. Murphy should’ve been the most vulnerable freshman.

Meanwhile, Hillsborough County is coming in even stronger for Charlie Crist as election-day votes are counted.

And in FL-02, Democrat Gwen Graham is leading odious Rep. Steve Southerland 60-40. That would be a Democratic pickup. At least in Florida, no wave.

I’ll just say I didn’t see a lot of standing up for them by the losing candidate. Should make some other Democrats rethink the strategy of snubbing Obama to the point of appearing disrespectful and not really with him to Obama’s core voters who just happens to be the ones they need to keep to win any election

Anyway let’s see how Mary Landrieu does. I’m hearing there were bigger numbers than usual in NOLA. Hope it’s enough.

This is a new one on me: Election judges in Chicago got robocalls telling them they had to show up to a (fictional) three-hour training yesterday or they wouldn’t be able to work today.

A number of city election judges received “intimidating” phone calls over the weekend that led some of them to quit the post, according to officials at the Chicago Board of Elections. More than 2,000 judges didn’t show up on Tuesday, Jim Allen said.

    —
Neal said dozens of party-affiliated judges who help oversee polling places received calls instructing them to attend additional training sessions. The callers also told them to only vote for the party for which they serve as judges.

“We faced a problem with a malicious attempt yesterday, reaching out to our judges telling them (that) unless they served another three hour session at the training facility they could not serve today. Many of our judges resigned immediately,” Neal said.

    —
Allen said the calls came from one party, but that information would not be released on Election Day. Officials are seeking an investigation.

There were polling places that were unable to open on time because not enough judges showed up.

I was happy to see Dayton elected in 2010 and will hopefully be happy with tonight’s result (participated in the 2010 DFL convention and spent the 2+ hr drive home gripping the steering wheel and yelling at trees about what went down – somewhat naive about party politics, I guess).

Grew up in the 8th and all of my family is there, fingers crossed for Nolan.

PS – there is a most excellent NHL contest that is keeping my attention at the moment. Sorry, Cole, but your team is going down.

@Schlemazel: Understood. I actually think it’s the opposite of making the Rs stronger. I’ve largely checked out compared to previous cycles (partly because I’m uber (some-say-over) regulated due to my job), but I just don’t see the animosity you might see with a party-endorsed candidate. I realize that might be a bit contrarian, but there you have it.

Can we have an open thread focused on what state Scott Brown runs for next? Maybe when McCain retires he can run in AZ since they are BFFs. Rachel Maddow must be thrilled BTW.

In all seriousness, can Brown be put out to pasture now? This is his second loss in as many years and states. I’m sure Chuck Todd will find some silver lining for him though.

Not that there’s much suspense here in RI, but with 15% in, every statewide office, both HR seats and the Senate seat are going to D’s. More importantly, every bond issue that I cared about is showing solid approval, and the proposal for a constitutional convention is going down to defeat.

Senator Jack Reed is leading 70-30 at this point; that’s about what I expected his margin to be.

Just checked in on Ohio, my old home state. Pretty much the expected bad news in the major statewide races, as Kay has been informing us. Kasich wins re-election as Governor, thanks in large part to the self-destruction of his Democratic challenger.

Nina Turner lost to incumbent Jon Husted for Secretary of State, which saddens me, since she worked her tail off campaigning for that office, and if you know of some of Husted’s shenanigans, and those of earlier SoS Ken Blackwell (during the Bush years), you know how important that office can be.

    Oh well… Courage, Kay!

How do you lose to an asshole who was in charge when the largest Medicaid fraud in history occurred?

Because said asshole plays to the paranoia and partisan hate of the voting base in Florida. he beat out an established conservative in the 2010 primary by pandering to the Tea Party rage voters.

But making it worse is the poor voter turnout. There’s 4.6 million registered Dems in the state (also 4.1 million Republicans), and yet we’re barely seeing half those numbers show up (both candidates in the 2.5 million vote counts right now). There is a shitload of voters – mostly moderates in both parties who get pissed off at the mudslinging – who tune out and don’t vote… and that’s not even considering the NPA voters in the 3 million count range and how they split off. There’s 11 million registered voters in Florida and yet we’re seeing total turnout in the 5 million range (AGAIN). We’ve got like 6 million people WHO DON’T VOTE… and this is out of 18 million total residents. WE ARE ROYALLY SCREWED BECAUSE OF POOR TURNOUT.
