@raven: Happy birthday! I used to have a sour orange tree in my front lawn before I moved. Amazing to cook with. I made a ton of marmalade and everything else I could think of. Used the sour orange juice for marinade for a pork dish. Traditional Yucatanian Poc Chuc. Amazing. Are you using achiote paste in yours? That really made a difference.
I had so many sour oranges I didn’t know what to do with them, so did a lot of reading. Apparently sour orange was the original citrus for “Key lime pie”. Obviously it wasn’t Key limes but sour oranges. So I made one. It was good! I also made a sour orange bread. Still had so many oranges I was giving them away.
@Morzer: It was about 20 feet tall. No way I could do that given the move was an intermediate move for a few months until the final place. It was a dangerous tree–had two to three inch sharp thorns. Could poke you in the eye if you weren’t paying attention. Really gorgeous in winter when it was filled with bright orange softball sized oranges, though. Like a Christmas tree!
I believe the kimchi was made within the last two days, so I assume it’s going to remain in the fridge for the foreseeable future. I have got a commitment from She Who Must Be Obeyed to go to Namdeamun tomorrow and skulk around. Her birthday is coming up, so I am hoping to find something she might like there.
Just heard about “The Whiteness Project,” which is partially funded by PBS. Absolutely fascinating. The creator has caught a lot of heat on twitter though.
@BillinGlendaleCA: Aha, I only got that far south once, they didn’t like to let raggedy asses from up north in that AO. I hear there is actually a hiking trail on the route the Blue House Raiders took?
It does sound wonderful. Some day I dream of finding a place with lots of garden space, building a really good conservatory and growing all sorts of wonderful things in it. Unfortunately, I have inverse green thumb, so I will probably have to observe from a distance, rather than pruning and grafting and watering and all that good stuff.
@Violet: It is but it’s complicated what with the brining, marinading, browning, braising and then browning.

@raven: Sour orange stock is actually the root stock used for most citrus in Florida and south Texas. The sour orange rootstock is hardier and withstands much lower temperatures. The citrus variety that is desired is grafted onto the hardier rootstock so that the tree itself won’t freeze.
What sometimes happens is that the grafted bit freezes and the rootstock remains. That’s what happened in my case. The rootstock doesn’t always produce fruit, but in this case it did. The rootstocks have names but I don’t know what this one was.
The sour orange was brought over by the Spanish–probably some variety of Seville oranges.
@Violet: I’m digging the simple but elegant recipes lately. Years ago, I once tried roasting crown roast lamb chops by dipping them in creamy ‘Caesar’ Italian dressing then covering them with crushed crackers. 450F for 15-20 minutes, medium rare to medium. Really good.

But for anyone who has followed my sad little saga re: the dream job turned into nightmare – Fear not! For I haft found a temporary living situation until at least Dec. 20th, and have scheduled my full hip replacement surgery on Dec. 9th.
From what my PCP tells me, there are nursing home/rehab places available once you get out of the hospital proper, and they will feed you, take care of you, make you do the dang phyisotherapy – and some social workers will visit me while in the nursing home/rehab place to help me get into subsidized/temporary housing.

@Mike E: I hope so too. There were some really thoughtful pieces in there (in addition to the ones that made me want to hurl) and I hope that those help kick off a conversation rather than a stand-off where no one is listening to anyone else because their minds are very firmly made up already.
I thought it was interesting that only a handful of interviewees talked about what it meant to be white without reference to African-Americans or Asians or Latinos; I’d assumed that there would be more of a reflection on ethnic European heritage, culture, and customs than there was.
@p.a.: I think it’s pretty funny. REM’s management has been pushing the show for weeks. It’s for a good cause and apparently this group had some big influence on people of a certain age. “Airplane” is one of those iconic Vietnam songs like We Gotta Get Outta This Place, and Green Green Grass of home but I always thought of the Box Tops as some kind of bubble gum group. I had never heard of Big Star until this thing came about. I hope my wife is having a good time down there.
Also, anyone see who MS State and Ole Miss played today? Why didn’t they just play a local high school?
I had a slightly heated but good-natured discussion about this exact topic with a friend who is a fanatical Vols fan and SEC partisan. We were texting back and forth about the TV games, and I made a joke about “Ole Miss is playing Presbyterian?! WTF?” and then added something about Georgia playing Charlotte Southern on November 22. So then she called me so we could argue in real time.
My point, and someone tell me if I’m misremembering this, is that back in the day it was incredibly rare for big-time schools to schedule such lopsided opponents, and so late in the season. My memory—and I graduated from Mizzou in the ’70s—is that a team would have two or three non-conference games in September and then after that it was all conference games or big-time rivals or independents, e.g., Notre Dame. And the non-conference games were usually against roughly “equal” teams, e.g., I remember Missouri-Illinois being scheduled a lot as one of those popular adjacent-state rivalries.
. . . Okay, just looked up Mizzou’s schedule for 1972: Oregon, Baylor and California in September, then all the other teams in the Big Eight, with Notre Dame slotted in on October 21. (Mizzou went 6-5 and lost to Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl.)
Okay, Georgia Bulldogs in 1972: Baylor, Tulane and North Carolina State in September, then seven SEC games and Georgia Tech on December 2. (Georgia went 7-4.)
Fast-forward to Georgia in 1992: Aside from eight SEC games, the Bulldogs played Cal State Fullerton in September (beat them 56-0), Georgia Southern in October (beat them 34-7) and Georgia Tech on November 28 (beat them 31-17). Georgia finished 9-2 (losses to Tennessee and Florida) and then beat Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl.
Georgia in 2012: Aside from eight SEC games, they played Buffalo and Florida Atlantic in September, Georgia Southern in November and Georgia Tech on November 24. The Bulldogs finished 11-1, then lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship and beat Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.
In 2012 Missouri played, aside from SEC teams, Southeastern Louisiana, Arizona State and Central Florida in September, then Syracuse in November. The Tigers finished 5-7.
LSU, which on my TV right now, played Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe earlier this season. And, as you pointed out, No. 1 Mississippi State played Tennessee-Martin today, as well as South Alabama earlier in the season.
So it seems like there has been a bit of a trend down the food chain, but Presbyterian and Charlotte Southern? C’mon, man!

@Steeplejack: I’ll say it again, when they went to 12 games they put one of the cookie pushers late in the schedule. There is a huge uproar on the Georgia message boards about how sucky the home schedule has become. They raised prices for next year, it’s being called the Alabama tax but the rest of the schedule blows:
I was listening to some SEC coach on the radio and he said people could bitch all they wanted but the cupcake games are for the players, there is no way they can play 12 games that are high level. People keep buying tickets and until they stop that’s the deal

Not to mention how absolutely certain they were that there was no advantaged to being white (that they’d experienced). I wanted to bitchslap the voluptuous woman” who insisted that black me see “hi!” as an invitation to approach. And she’s scared! I must experience a way different kind of white guy from the ones in her area, because my experience has been the exact opposite.
[. . .] the cupcake games are for the players, there is no way they can play 12 games that are high level.
That’s a fair point that I hadn’t thought of. But it kind of speaks to the commercialization of the college game and the exploitation of the players, too. They’re so overworked that they need a snoozer game every so often.
ETA: And I know the bloodbath games are a big payday for the little teams.
126.
p.a.
Why do SEC teams win national football championships? One reason- SEC seems to be the only conference that plays defense.
@Steeplejack: Oh yea, no doubt about that. There is so much money involved for the community too. Of course that is here, it’s a pretty small city and 6 Saturday’s make or break some businesses.
I had a friend who used to laugh that her father became a ham radio buff specifically so that he could hide out in the basement with headphones on and drink beer. And with virtually no danger of spouse or kids wanting to “share” the hobby.
No, as Raven said above, it’s all about the money. The market wants more games, but the players need a snoozer every so often to rest up. And the little schools get a big payday and an exciting “What if?” moment for their fans.
My friend told me that after this payday Presbyterian will be able to buy lights for their stadium so they can play night games.

have been running like a top for six weeks, and tomorrow we hopefully get the keys to the new condo.
The place we are leaving is cleaner now than in years. Hope we can maintain that level in the new home.
Which is more or less what we said to you during the 70s, 80s and 90s. A nouveau riche franchise like the Patsies really ought to be a little more humble after just one decade of success, especially when you consider how bad the AFC East has been as a division during that decade. Now that the Bills and Dolphins are returning to something like their historically dominant selves, the Patsies are going to learn a few overdue lessons in humility in very short order.

Could poke you in the eye if you weren’t paying attention. Really gorgeous in winter when it was filled with bright orange softball sized oranges, though. Like a Christmas tree!

The sour orange was brought over by the Spanish–probably some variety of Seville oranges.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: Part of the mountain path that some of the North Korean raiders used in their retreat from Seoul has been turned into a trail for hikers, tourists and nature lovers. Even though Mr. Kim never actually used that path, it has been officially christened the “Kim Shin-jo Route.”

Well, i don’t know about the games of sport. Been too busy.
So – Hallelujah! Thanks, Obama! I might just come out of this as a functioning worker bee!
Or. of course, write The Great American Novel. Hahaha!

@BGinCHI:
C’mon, man!

@efgoldman: You can only snipe at the boss so many times… Dude got what was coming.
raven
@Steeplejack: I’ll say it again, when they went to 12 games they put one of the cookie pushers late in the schedule. There is a huge uproar on the Georgia message boards about how sucky the home schedule has become. They raised prices for next year, it’s being called the Alabama tax but the rest of the schedule blows:
09/05 – ULM (Tickets)
09/19 – South Carolina (Tickets)
09/26 – Southern U. (Tickets)
10/03 – Alabama (Tickets)
10/17 – Missouri (Homecoming)
11/07 – Kentucky (Tickets)
11/21 – Georgia Southern (Tickets)
I was listening to some SEC coach on the radio and he said people could bitch all they wanted but the cupcake games are for the players, there is no way they can play 12 games that are high level. People keep buying tickets and until they stop that’s the deal
