Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans do not trust women.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

“But what about the lurkers?”

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Hoping the Avs can string together two wins in a row.

And the discussion last night as to whether I should buy the 14-year-old a sword at the Renaissance Fair? Moot. He WON an actual sword playing “head toss,” which involves grabbing mannequin heads by the hair and tossing them into a barrel. He scored 13 out of 20 and the next highest score was 5/20. I think I’ve created a monster…. Small child got a crossbow that can either shoot small arrows or marshmallows. At least we’ll be prepared for the zombie apocalypse. Or a S’mores emergency.

You just need different technology to help with that. Kevlar body armor might be useful, for instance.

Auburn has multiple miracle finishes and probably should have lost last week except for a cruel (broken leg) fumble…

…and they fumble twice at the end in brutal fashion to lose. Karmic justice.

Now, if Alabama goes down at LSU and FSU manages to choke out a loss, we have chaos.

    Pens looking good so far.

Getting ready to eat some beautiful salmon I got on sale with rice and roasted carrots accompanied by a nice Sauvignon blanc that was also on sale. Tomorrow it’s a roasted rosemary chicken with mashed potatoes and roasted Brussels sprouts and an inexpensive Pinot noir. Lemon pudding cake for dessert both nights. Comfort food to calm me after this thoroughly depressing week. Hope the wine talk doesn’t bother you, Cole. If so, sorry and I won’t do it again.

@Iowa Old Lady: One guy who follows intel reports in that part of the world – and is pretty reputable AFAICT – smells some social media ratfucking going on:

    J.M. Berger @intelwire

Corrected number: More than 16K tweets of “Baghdadi Killed” hashtag today, 1K in last hour. Treat with extreme caution, I’m looking deeper.

At least 1/3 of the last 3,000 Baghdadi killed tweets were purchased from a spammer.

There also some stale Iranian agitprop pictures of “Baghdadi’s corpse” circulating which have been recycled from months ago.

The most active accounts promoting the hashtag look fishy, to be generous.

The purchased tweets are all retweets of two original tweets, one of which contained the aforementioned fraudulent picture.

Apparently ISIS’s enemies are learning from its social media tactics.

Used the sour orange juice for marinade for a pork dish. Traditional Yucatanian Poc Chuc. Amazing. Are you using achiote paste in yours? That really made a difference.

I had so many sour oranges I didn’t know what to do with them, so did a lot of reading. Apparently sour orange was the original citrus for “Key lime pie”. Obviously it wasn’t Key limes but sour oranges. So I made one. It was good! I also made a sour orange bread. Still had so many oranges I was giving them away.

@raven: Sour orange stock is actually the root stock used for most citrus in Florida and south Texas. The sour orange rootstock is hardier and withstands much lower temperatures. The citrus variety that is desired is grafted onto the hardier rootstock so that the tree itself won’t freeze.

What sometimes happens is that the grafted bit freezes and the rootstock remains. That’s what happened in my case. The rootstock doesn’t always produce fruit, but in this case it did. The rootstocks have names but I don’t know what this one was.

The sour orange was brought over by the Spanish–probably some variety of Seville oranges.

Well, i don’t know about the games of sport. Been too busy.

But for anyone who has followed my sad little saga re: the dream job turned into nightmare – Fear not! For I haft found a temporary living situation until at least Dec. 20th, and have scheduled my full hip replacement surgery on Dec. 9th.
From what my PCP tells me, there are nursing home/rehab places available once you get out of the hospital proper, and they will feed you, take care of you, make you do the dang phyisotherapy – and some social workers will visit me while in the nursing home/rehab place to help me get into subsidized/temporary housing.

So – Hallelujah! Thanks, Obama! I might just come out of this as a functioning worker bee!

Or. of course, write The Great American Novel. Hahaha!

    @BGinCHI:

Also, anyone see who MS State and Ole Miss played today? Why didn’t they just play a local high school?

I had a slightly heated but good-natured discussion about this exact topic with a friend who is a fanatical Vols fan and SEC partisan. We were texting back and forth about the TV games, and I made a joke about “Ole Miss is playing Presbyterian?! WTF?” and then added something about Georgia playing Charlotte Southern on November 22. So then she called me so we could argue in real time.

My point, and someone tell me if I’m misremembering this, is that back in the day it was incredibly rare for big-time schools to schedule such lopsided opponents, and so late in the season. My memory—and I graduated from Mizzou in the ’70s—is that a team would have two or three non-conference games in September and then after that it was all conference games or big-time rivals or independents, e.g., Notre Dame. And the non-conference games were usually against roughly “equal” teams, e.g., I remember Missouri-Illinois being scheduled a lot as one of those popular adjacent-state rivalries.

. . . Okay, just looked up Mizzou’s schedule for 1972: Oregon, Baylor and California in September, then all the other teams in the Big Eight, with Notre Dame slotted in on October 21. (Mizzou went 6-5 and lost to Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl.)

Okay, Georgia Bulldogs in 1972: Baylor, Tulane and North Carolina State in September, then seven SEC games and Georgia Tech on December 2. (Georgia went 7-4.)

Fast-forward to Georgia in 1992: Aside from eight SEC games, the Bulldogs played Cal State Fullerton in September (beat them 56-0), Georgia Southern in October (beat them 34-7) and Georgia Tech on November 28 (beat them 31-17). Georgia finished 9-2 (losses to Tennessee and Florida) and then beat Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl.

Georgia in 2012: Aside from eight SEC games, they played Buffalo and Florida Atlantic in September, Georgia Southern in November and Georgia Tech on November 24. The Bulldogs finished 11-1, then lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship and beat Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.

In 2012 Missouri played, aside from SEC teams, Southeastern Louisiana, Arizona State and Central Florida in September, then Syracuse in November. The Tigers finished 5-7.

LSU, which on my TV right now, played Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Monroe earlier this season. And, as you pointed out, No. 1 Mississippi State played Tennessee-Martin today, as well as South Alabama earlier in the season.

So it seems like there has been a bit of a trend down the food chain, but Presbyterian and Charlotte Southern? C’mon, man!

@Steeplejack: I’ll say it again, when they went to 12 games they put one of the cookie pushers late in the schedule. There is a huge uproar on the Georgia message boards about how sucky the home schedule has become. They raised prices for next year, it’s being called the Alabama tax but the rest of the schedule blows:

    09/05 – ULM (Tickets)
    09/19 – South Carolina (Tickets)
    09/26 – Southern U. (Tickets)
    10/03 – Alabama (Tickets)
    10/17 – Missouri (Homecoming)
    11/07 – Kentucky (Tickets)
    11/21 – Georgia Southern (Tickets)

I was listening to some SEC coach on the radio and he said people could bitch all they wanted but the cupcake games are for the players, there is no way they can play 12 games that are high level. People keep buying tickets and until they stop that’s the deal

I do sometimes manage to feel sorry for Rex, big, bellowing, badly-tattooed lug that he is.

@raven: I mean SEC’s top teams play D relative to the rest of the NCAA. Big 12, PAC 12, top teams play like arena football.

    Love theme for Little Boots.

And you have to like a clip where a disco song prompts a discussion by someone named SweetDick Willie of the use of the hexatonic scale.

    @Yatsuno:

PS: You & I have colonoscopies on the same day. I wish you well & hopefully you don’t kill anyone during your prep period.

I had a colonoscopy not too long ago. All the comments about how awful the prep is and etc made me quite nervous,

    Imagine my surprise when :
    (A) the prep fluid didn’t taste SO bad and
    (B) the rushing to the toilet to ‘get cleansed’ was far less urgent and painful then having GI distress in a “third world” country, when you truly think you are going to die and start whimpering for your mommy.

Have a wonderful experience! Just whine whenever you feel a twinge of discomfort and they’ll give you another shot of the golden stuff :)

@efgoldman: I have gone hungry many times in my life (sometimes on purpose, sometimes not) so that part didn’t bother me.

I had the ‘conscious enough” procedure to watch it on a video screen and go “Wow! that’s cool!” to “Ow! That hurts!!” (transverse colon move” – at which point doc said ‘give her another 2mgs of golden stuff’ and all was good)

P.S. Doc complimented me on my ultra-clean colon, for what that’s worth :)

A certification that can come in handy when dealing with the more vulgar sort of interlocutor.

    @Cervantes: Hmmm..

How would one use that certification?

An “ultra-clean colon” certification could come in handy if someone were to make a rude assertion about what you’re full of.
