It’s cold and there is a lot of freezing rain, so we are just satying at home and watching football (and playing warcrack, in my case). It’s so cold, that Rosie managed to jump into a laundry basket full of dirty clothes, and when we called her for treats, she came out like this:
She somehow had managed to wrap a t-shirt all around her body, and walked around like that for several hours, looking like the JRT equivalent of a pack mule. Goofy dog.

Lazy weekend for me. Meeting with one of my work colleagues who was fired last week. He’s a good friend of mine, he just had his second kid, and he just bought a house…really bummed out about it. He was also really good at what he did, which makes it even less sensible.
It sucks when shit things happen to really good people.

I’m writing up my responses to the developmental edit letter I got yesterday. I haven’t even looked at the Word file with the story yet because I want to deal with big picture questions first. The letter resolved a bunch of them but also opened up the fact that the second half of the novel needs to change drastically. I still need it to end in the same place it currently does but the journey there needs to be altered drastically. As the story currently stands, Phoebe is just far too passive over the second half of the story.
And I’m keeping an eye on the Minnesota/Nebraska box score. I fully anticipate that the Gophers have won their last football game of this season already.

I just saw McGraw Milhaven, a twit talk show host on Rush Limbaugh’s shit station KMOX (once a respectable station), being interviewed on CNN and peddling right wing bullshit and fear (see Gateway Pundit, Infowars, etc.). There is no wide spread sense of general panic amongst the general population of STL. I have no doubt that there are some people in their survival bunkers and others making plans for the end times but everywhere I’ve been yesterday and today (Clayton, STL city and county) has been pretty much business as usual. May get up to Red’s BBQ in Ferguson this afternoon to get some brisket if home chores allow. Sure, people are concerned but Milhaven’s fear show is bullshit on stilts. The streets are not empty.
Thanks,
Had to get that off my chest.

@jimmiraybob: Another bit of evidence supporting my hypothesis they’re pretty much all talk and no do. They have plenty of Goebbelses, but no Hitler or Goering so far. I would be a little concerned about Ted Cruz filling such a role if he ever gained real power, but I think that unlikely; he’s too unstable. The 1% don’t like wild cards. They want things to keep rolling along the way they are. (Weimar Germany didn’t have a 1%, and those who used to occupy that position were starving along with everyone else.)
I ain’t God, however, so I can be wrong, so when that decision does come down, you guys in the St. Louis area be careful, stay alert, and make sure you know the side roads out of town in case it looks like a good idea to evade the whole mess for a while.

I’m starting my shopping for the 3.5 year old girl I’ve adopted for Xmas. Her mom is a single mom w/o reliable (if any child) support. All she’s asked for is a doll with some doll clothes and dress up (cosplay, I’m guessing) clothes for the tyke, so that tyke will believe in Santa. The agency liaison tells me Frozen is all the rage in terms of what the dress up look is. I’m going to also get some regular clothes.
I’m going to include some bath & body stuff for mom as well. The agency says that’s a luxury the moms don’t have because $ is so scarce. Any advice on tyke gifts – or other things mom might like – will be welcomed with delight. I will of course encourage everyone to adopt a child for Xmas gifts; just use the money with which you’d planned to purchase my gift.

@LookingForACanadian: The Gopher women play Minnesota State-Mankato (an institution so desperate for an identity that they stole one from a bad Craig T. Nelson sitcom) this afternoon. They’re a bad team with the prospect of getting better: they have some speed; they play hard; and there are eleven freshmen in the lineup every night. My father witnessed the final destruction of 2 civilizations in WW II, and the goldbug nuts are way off. Gold is worth nothing when you’re standing in the rubble. At that stage, currencies in order of value are: cigarettes, young girls, young adult women, and food. I expect drugs figured in there too, though he witnessed no such transactions; particularly in Rome, he was way too busy keeping his men from swapping food and cigarettes for girls to worry about mere drugs. In the worst of such transactions in which he managed to intervene, the girl appeared to be six at the oldest. There is a hard core cadre of about 25 of us that follow them on the road and another 50 that show up for every home game with another 100 that I would classify as ‘regulars’. The Gopher womens team leads the nation in average attendance with a bit more than 2000 a game actually live fans per game (as opposed to the BS attendance numbers all teams put out). They do that without a “fill the bowl” stunt that a lot of teams use, playing in a big arena and giving tickets away to reach 10-12,000 for one night.
Hockey, when properly played, is a beautiful game & the women pay it very well. Sadly there is not enough talent to make every team competitive but you should take in a game if you ever get a chance.

@Corner Stone: I think the drop in airline ticket prices once oil prices have dropped takes awhile. Airlines tend to run on slim margins and if they can make money on fuel prices, they will as long as they can. Plus, I think many airlines pre-purchase airline fuel so they may be pricing based on what they paid for the fuel last year.
If you want more tips on when to buy tickets, etc. let me know. A new thing they’re doing is to track your searches and continue to raise prices on the fares you’re looking at. I’m not sure of all the ins and outs of that, but I’ve been screwed by it. Browser crashed, rebooted it, in the ensuing five minutes or so the ticket prices went up $80.
The current recommendation is to search on one device and purchase on a different device. If you can search on a different IP address, that’s supposed to be more helpful. I’m not sure if just using a different browser on the same device works or not.

1) Are we really going to beat Nebraska two years in a row? That’s something considering that when I came up here, Nebraska beat the Gophers 84-13 and the only reason it was that close was because Tom Osborne put the cheerleaders in to play the entire second half. Well, that’s one way to end a Nebraska drive. Gophers recover a fumble by stripping a receiver after he catches it on the 5 yard line and was headed in for the TD. I simply wanted to know if anyone who is traveling had found a decent deal, or if everything was still about the same across the board.
At one point I worked with the team that developed the software for how airlines set ticket pricing in the modern era.
Just a random question about what is actually being seen.
Thanks!

@Corner Stone: Did you see my reply to you upthread?
As for looking for a deal, it depends where you’re going and when you want to/can fly. Cheapest day to fly is Tuesday followed by Wednesday. Cheapest day to buy your ticket is Monday night/Tuesday morning at midnight in the time zone of the airline you’re looking at. They release tickets around that time. Tuesday is generally the best day to buy a ticket.
Don’t buy your ticket on the weekend. Always more expensive.
Cincinnati is the most expensive city in the US to fly in/out of at the moment. A family member had to go there a short while ago and tickets were ridiculously expensive. A short while later I saw an article saying it was the most expensive airport in the country. So that’s why.
Personally I’ve seen some good deals but it depends on airlines, your destination, your flexibility, etc. Prices aren’t as low as they were three years ago but that’s no surprise.

John Cole,
There IS an undefeated WV football playing today. Actually, the game is over now, after a bunch of pretty good defensive play, and Marshall won their 11th straight game.
Shame if you didn’t watch it. It will be the best WV game this week of the college season!

Check for sales at The Body Shop. Sensitive skin runs in the family, but their soaps, shower gels and body butters work well.
As for little girls, don’t forget about books:
Dora
Sofia the First
Doc McStuffin
Disney Princesses
You can find them for a good price on Amazon
Thanks for doing this.

@Violet: Forbes said that quite a while ago when it was a Delta hub; now that it’s been downgraded to a spoke it still wouldn’t surprise me; most spoke cities get shit on pretty good.
In the same Forbes article, Traverse City, MI was rated as the second worst city for pricing-during the non summer months they are served exclusively by regional carriers; only Delta serves them via Detroit and Minneapolis with A319s during the summer season.

I just went and returned that stuff I bought yesterday to Hobby Lobby. Sigh. Liberal guilt is a cruel master.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): My almost-four-year-old (holy shit) girl loves play tea party and play kitchen stuff. She sees us cooking a lot, so she likes to role-play. They have play tea sets for not much money. Classic books like “Where the Wild Things are” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” are quite popular. Costco has cheap kids’ books, so if you have a membership, I’d suggest checking it out. We also got some Ikea train set stuff, which is like the Brio train set, but so so so much less expensive.
For mom, I think bath stuff is good, but also gift cards to someplace like Ulta so she could pick out something a little spendy and luxurious for herself, like perfume. I also like small home decor items like candlesticks or accessories like a cute scarf. Do you have Charming Charlie near you? That place is AMAZING for low-price accessories.

Since this is an open thread:
Heavy drinkers are rarely alcoholics: CDC
Conclusion: Most excessive drinkers (90%) did not meet the criteria for alcohol dependence. A comprehensive approach to reducing excessive drinking that emphasizes evidence-based policy strategies and clinical preventive services could have an impact on reducing excessive drinking in addition to focusing on the implementation of addiction treatment services.

@Another Holocene Human: I gotta go back and look at my WW II references, but if I remember right, at first Krupp et al thought the Nazis were entirely too trailer-park and preferred other parties, but as the Nazis gained power of course the companies jumped on the bandwagon. Some things never change.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): Also, don’t forget Bath and Body Works, another brand poor people regard as luxury, because if you can only buy one item, as poor people usually can only do, it’s beyond their reach, but if you’re lucky enough to be able to be a Secret Santa and can buy 5 or 6 bottles of that pump soap, for example, they’ll be $3 or so apiece, and are actually a better deal than Softsoap because they last about 3 times as long. One of the reasons you have to be ferociously determined, as well as lucky, to escape poverty is that, as strange as it sounds, it costs a lot to be poor. You can’t spend a lot to save more in the long run because you don’t have that lot to spend in the first place.
