Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

He really is that stupid.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Second rate reporter says what?

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

I’ve been thinking about the Michael Brown case and what conversations I will have about it when I visit my family in December.

And it’s kind of depressing, because I can predict how most of them will react, and it will be a very different reaction than my own. My mother’s opinion will likely be the most disappointing to me, because I think on some things she’s gotten nastier over the years. In fact, my father, who has never been a paragon of racial egalitarianism, will probably have a more sympathetic (to Brown) take on the case than my mom will. That’s weird to me.

I didn’t think yesterday’s story of the four year old shooting the three-year old with daddy’s special friend (“as safe as collecting stamps”) could be topped. Of course, I was wrong.

An Oklahoma woman was accidentally shot and killed Monday evening by her toddler son.

Neighbors said the 26-year-old east Tulsa woman, whose name was not released, was home with her 3-year-old son and a 1-year-old daughter when the boy found a high-caliber handgun underneath a couch. The child managed to pull the trigger, police said, and his mother was shot once in the head as she changed the baby’s diaper.

The woman’s mother-in-law, who also lives with the family, returned home to find the woman had been shot and called for help. She was taken to an area hospital and listed in grave condition, but she died shortly after 5:30 p.m.

Police said the boy kept saying, “Mommy shot,” as officers buckled him into a squad car. The boy apparently tried to escape the house before his grandmother arrived.

Life goes on. And suddenly, not.

    November 25, 2014 at 4:35 pm

Also, too, can I get a hearty “No shit, Sherlock” on this finding?

The study found that people who saw the winter of 2012 as warmer than usual were right – it was, on any time scale. But that conclusion did not affect their views on the science behind climate change.

The results further undermine a fundamental assumption that has driven science communication since a U.N. panel first announced, in 1990, that evidence pointed toward an increasingly warming Earth due to the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. People may be hesitant to accept the consensus view now, scientists and policy makers have since assured, but that will change when their local climate starts changing.

“There’s really little to no evidence of that” in the U.S., said sociologist Aaron McCright of Michigan State University, lead author of the study. McCright found that Americans’ perceptions of aberrant weather patterns matched the data. But he found that those individual perceptions did little to drive how strongly people believed climate change was underway, caused by man, and constituted an immediate threat. Nor did that personal experience with abnormal climate influence whether Americans thought the scientific community agreed on those counts.

It’s no surprise to anyone – least of all social scientists – that America is deeply divided along party and ideological lines about climate (and healthcare, among other topics). But a growing body of evidence now suggests that ideology interferes with the assessment of science.

I suppose I should make the place look much less like the chief occupant had been spending most days um, animatin’ and less vacuumatin’. The lack of compassion and the persistence of the lies in the Brown case are breaking my heart. MB reached in and attacked the cop. No, that’s what he said, most witnesses said the cop pulled brown to the vehicle door, which he also slammed onto himself. He stole cigars. No, he may *MAY* have tried to pay for more than he could afford. But he did pay for his cigarillos, got into a shoving match and the cops were called by someone who wasn’t the store owner. Brown went for the officer’s gun. No, he didn’t. He died from shots consistent with attacking the cops. According to who? He died 153 feet away from the car, so teleporting bullets? Man, fuck these people.

Well I think I got through to an old friend on FB today. She had posted a rant about “the animals” in Ferguson burning down their town and how she had no sympathy for “those people” when they do that. I suggested she replace the quoted phrases with the phrase “the criminals” and then see how she felt about the residents of Ferguson and whether she felt personally resonsible for stopping all the criminals in her town. She messaged me later that she was glad I spoke up and gently showed her another way of thinking. I feel a little better about that.

Oh please oh please oh please let this be true.

By the end of this week, be sure to start battening down the hatches.

Weather officials on Monday updated a rain outlook for the month of December, saying now that there will be above-normal rainfall moving toward the New Year that will have a significant effect on the drought outlook.

Logan Johnson, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Monterey, said above-normal precipitation is expected across the entire state during December, and that for central and southern California, the wet stuff is likely to keep coming throughout the rainy season, which runs through February.

“This very welcome news and should improve drought conditions statewide,” Johnson said.

In fact, according to Rich Tinker of the Climate Prediction Center at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the above-normal rainfall this season is knocking the Central Coast down a notch on the U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook.

Up until Friday, the majority of California was listed as an area where “drought persists or intensifies.” Now, because of soppy month ahead, the Central Coast and most of the rest of the state is listed as “drought remains but improves.” Temperatures, however, are expected to remain warmer than normal, which will further support this year as one of the warmest on record.

All the bombing and stuff? Didn’t accomplish the first fucking thing for the Irish people.

Fuck that idiotic noise. Violence is a tactic that works for the strong, not for the weak. ETA: oops that’s ambiguous, I mean those in power and likely to stay that way not the powerless or those lacking deep institutional power for example a majority gov’t that lacks power in other institutions such as military, courts, church and is thus vulnerable to rightist violence

I will say that the one thing I just love (eye roll) about the Ferguson grand jury decision is all the lecturing today from white people I see on social media about how to act right and totes not get shot by police. Let’s focus on the selected individuals rioting and not the peaceful protests that have been happening for months in the face of a heavy militarized police force. Let’s post videos on Facebook of black people talking about non-violence as a solution while we sit back in our all white communities in some upper middle class suburb tisk tisking at “those” people.

I especially love MLK quotes, which only seem to pop up when someone wants to criticism black people. Something I think MLK himself would find funny. Oh, and let us all forget that in the face of non violent protests and the continual urging of all people to come together in peace and harmony, MLK had his head blown off. But pull your pants up black boys!

    @ruemara:

The thing to know with the Giant Evil is that it’s always “hurry up and wait.” They want to start interviews right away so you hear from them pretty quickly if the recruiter likes your resume, but it takes for freakin’ EVER for the decision to be made.

The drive to Savannah took 9-1/2 hours vice the expected 5. Horrible weather, terrible traffic, bad roads (I-95 in South Carolina has thousands of potholes to keep taxes down), and plenty of construction delays. Just uncorked the first bottle of wine…

@efgoldman: You southerners don’t know how good you got it.

I had a localized ice storm last week – local, as in, my mountain. Drive down the bottom of the mountain, no ice. At my house, iced in for a week.

I did not know Florida had leaf changes!

Had I been organizing the riot (is such a thing possible?) I would have had most of the personnel yell, throw things, all the traditional riot stuff, to keep the authorities occupied, while a small group quietly went to the police station and let the air out of the tires on all the police cars. :D

And in Chicago for the past few weeks we’ve had trees gone completely bare, trees in full fall color, and trees covered in green leaves — until the barely double-digit temperatures early last week froze them.
