Open Thread: Done With Humanity

Nope, done with human beings.

A Kansas mother has been charged with the chilling death of her 10-year-old son, who she allegedly stabbed to death while he was sleeping because she thought he would be better off in heaven.

Nope.

EDIT: Super done with humanity.

After all those years of feminists saying we need girls running foreign policy to make the world safer, we get Obama and now look at us.

I don’t think his tweet has any actual, specific meaning. He’s just lumping Obama, women, and foreign policy with a general insinuation of something wrong. Oh and if you think I hold my impatience sole for white folks, I once had a conversation with another Black woman who actually tried to claim that Bill O’Reilly makes “good points” in regards to Black folk…I told her bullshit. Bill O’Reilly is a bigotted racist who hides his bullshit in “concern” for a community when he is actually just perpetuating stereotypes and wrapping them in “buzzwords” that stupid people fall for easily. And she isn’t the first Black person I know who have been stupid enough to fall for Bill O’s okey doke.

Leaving aside all the personal issues with gender and politics in Erickson’s tweet (the first case is too sad), even far more “respectable” conservatives, and maybe even a lot of self-ID’d liberals, seem to sincerely believe that the world is more violent and chaotic now than when he we had two hot wars going on as a result of a massive terror attack that, if we can’t say Bush could have stopped, he and his people (Cheney and Rice above all) ignored every warning was coming.

@greennotGreen: Zandar, in the first case, that’s just a tragic result of bad brain chemicals. Maybe someday we will know better how to treat mental disease, and such things won’t happen.

Yup. And with all the caveats about things we’ll never now, I think it’s highly unlikely there were no warning signs there. Is it even possible to keep track of how many people die every from untreated mental illness, their own and others.

The problem is that Conservatives think leadership is about speech rather than action. Thus Obama may be a fantastic role model, but he isn’t showing leadership because he isn’t spending enough time talking about it. Similarly, his foreign policy is a failure because he doesn’t swagger and threaten enough.

What Obama is doing is very threatening to them. He is showing the strength and power of “soft” power — of not invading Ukraine to “show” Russia but to put the screws to Putin using very effective and painful measures that are not about physical abuse or coercion. Putin also has a very primitive notion of power and other alternatives to accomplish his ends. He underestimates every option that is not about coercion because he just doesnt see anything else…

These are the people who want torture — even though it is not effective because they want to do torture, apparently. Physical coercion is their understanding of what power is and means. These are people who would run into walls with their heads over and over. It is damned alarming to them that you can have success with something that was not physically about overpowering or coercing someone. It is like homo sapiens confronting neanderthals — they just can’t grock higher level mental functioning and problems solving and are stuck with the club. They make it so easy for Obama to show them up! I bet sometimes even HE is surprised by how stupid they are and how easy they are to end run…

BTW, Obama aint nearly finished with Putin…

I strolled through the salty tears over at RedState this morning, and the despair was everywhere.
Between the self-describe lapsed Catholic wailing about the betrayal of the Pope (and wondering aloud where he could find a church conservative for him to non-attend), then others complaining about how the Commies have won (when we were THIS CLOSE to winning!), it was, as Mr. Pierce might say, wolverines looking for someone in a meat suit.

The quote from the child’s dad at the end started with something like “there’s no doubt in my military mind,” so it’s possible that he’s on active duty and not in a position to help out much day-to-day.

The whole notion of heaven and hell as infinite reward/punishment has this problem with children below the age of accountability, if you really take it seriously. If God will actually send children to hell for their sins (either original sin or the regular type), then God is a monster. But if children get an automatic pass below some cut-off age, why let them live to adulthood and risk eternal damnation? Of course, *you* could go to hell for killing them, but wouldn’t any loving parent make that sacrifice to save their children from a literally infinite punishment?

Usually, I suppose that even people who believe in hell don’t have the schizotypal level of certainty that would be required to take this step. But it ought to suggest that there’s at least something seriously wrong with the whole idea. (Infinite rewards and punishments tend to mess up game-theoretic expectation-value calculations: see Pascal’s wager.)

I think the non-doctrinal Catholic lore of limbo might have been invented as a workaround for the problem.

There have been family annilhilators for many years. And the usual answer they give as to why they killed whoever it is, that “they wanted to send them to heaven.” They often kill their whole family… mothers, aunts, wife, children, basically anyone who is in the family home.

@lamh36: Why do any Democrats go on Fox News in general? Seems like a waste of time. The fact that there are too many Black children born out of wedlock is something that racists like O’Reilly only bring up because they hate Black people. It’s not like they’re coming up with suggestions to help the situation. They support politicians and policies which hurt those children — including supporting stupid abstinence-only education for public schools. Perhaps less Black teens would be having children if they were properly educated and had access to birth control.

And O’Reilly needs to look around and see that plenty of White teens are having kids too. He should wear a t-shirt saying, “I’m a douche bag and I run my mouth all the time”.
