It’s life.
It’s Monday.
That’s two strikes right there.

The ‘best’ part is if you bought gold because of the morans on talk radio you probably got a royal rogering because they sold you ‘collector’ coins & not bullion coins. So you way over paid & will not get more than the troy weight price unless you can find a bigger sucker.
If the money was not going to fund evil it would warm my darkest heart that the mouth-breathers getting cleaned out because they believed in those assclowns.

Dick Cheney hasn’t been indicted, John Yoo hasn’t been disbarred, and John Calipari hasn’t been busted by the NCAA. I’d say that’s enough disappointment for one day.
And I have to go to the mall tonight, instead of watching what could be a very good game between Wisconsin and UC Berkeley.

The morons who bet heavily on gold and oil aren’t all bankrupt yet.

Mike R
Most of the people who listen to right wing radio, and would spend their money on advice from same, probably don’t bathe very often. So maybe a bath is what they need, and not only in the sense of getting clean. Maybe finding out the hard way is how some may learn that right wing derp is hazardous to your bank account and one’s well being in general..

A close family member bought a bunch of bullion gold, installed a safe, and is storing his horde there in anticipation of the end of money (due for mid to late January if I’m not mistaken). Question: is the troy ounce price of gold going down, hence the mockery in the tweet? I care, not because I’m LaRouchian, but because due to poor critical thinking on behalf of my relative, I now have inadvertently invested in physical gold. Can s/he sell it? How do I watch the price of gold fluctuate? Is it like a stock?
jo6pac
bought gold at $647 I don’t feel bad and if silver falls I will be buying more. Then again I have a garden I might be able to trade with neighbors with. The down turn that has happened will only get worse. Sad that this is what it has come to in Amerika for us the 99%.

In some respects.
KG
@pacem appellant: gold, like oil, trades on the commodities market. here’s CNN’s commodity market tracker. Light crude oil is down 43% for the year. Gold is off a couple percentage points for the year, but has been very wild (started the year off around 1200, went up almost to 1400, hovered between 1250 and 1350 for most of the year, dropped under 1200 and is now back there).

The most amazing thing just happened! The doorbell rang and it turned out to be the guy who recently moved in next door. I’ve seen him out walking with his dog and waved but never spoken. Okay, I will push the Eurotrash micro-channel MHz and Inspector Montalbano one more time and then shut up until someone—anyone—tells me they’ve seen the show. It’s a really good Italian crime series with great visuals (Sicily), good acting and good scripts. If you like Foyle’s War, Wallander, etc. ’Nuff said.
MHz is available on DirecTV, some PBS stations and some cable systems. Or, if you just want a taste, you can stream MHz live on their Web site. They’re running a Montalbano marathon all this week, two episodes a night. Tonight: “The Shape of Water” (8:00 p.m. and midnight EST) and “The Terracotta Dog” (10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. EST). I don’t think the peaceful protest should stop UNTIL after the police funerals. I think peaceful protest should continue and on thw DAY of the funeral, IN NYC ONLY then call for a day of rest for protest…peaceful protest should then continue. I understand why DeBlasio asked for it, his family security detail is done by NYPD, but I’m disappointed cause it feeds the narrative that the protest are to blame for the gunman’s actions.

As a 52-year numismatist, I cringe at these gold and silver “coins” deals, these Franklin mint sets and all the related junk. You want silver or gold, buy an ingot at a legitimate coin shop or precious metals dealer. Been through two cycles when silver went about $45 an ounce, sold my circulated silver US coins close to peak. When silver hits $48, dump. As a collector, I’ve noticed that proof sets are dropping extremely low. Bought 34 sets from the 80s and 90s for less than $5 a set. Good long-term investments (for my nieces and nephews – I won’t see another 25 years). Lon and short, if you’re getting into metal and coins, see an American /Numismatist Association member/dealer whose shop has been around a while. And don’t buy those state quarters. Ain’t worth a damn, unless they’re BU and proof, and then it will take a while to appreciate. On a happier note, my 12-year-old nephew gets a mixed Unc and circulated full set of Jefferson nickels this Christmas, as well as one of those loose proof sets (1984). So it goes.

For those who revel in really awful movies, the short A Visit To Santa airs on TCM at 5:43 a.m. Xmas day (only 12 minutes long, which is about 13 minutes too many). Quite possibly the most agonizing, terribly made Christmas tale ever earnestly put on celluloid.

Probably a good strategy, but one I won’t use. I have too much trouble driving at night any more. Gotta get four of something strong enough to hold the garden’s canned goods that we traditionally give to family for Christmas anyway, so I’ll get it all done and over with at once tomorrow. The dollar store where I usually get boxes and baskets and tissue paper is right across the street from the mall, so I might as well kill two birds with one stone. I’m just feeling very Scrooge-like this year.

@Scott Alloway:
Maybe not, but they’re still fun to collect by looking for them in your change. It’s amazing what can show up in ordinary change. I’ve found several genuine silver coins in my change; I could actually hear that something was up because silver coins ring differently from the nickel-copper sandwich ones. My father was recently showing off a gold sovereign- that’s a ~1/4 oz gold coin with a nominal value of 1 pound sterling- that he inexplicably found in his change the last time he was in England.

@raven: Is that what I said? There is one video that I’ve seen of the “dead cops” chant. One, from the same night, same group. It was NOT a daily movement of the peacful protestors.
None of the protest leaders I follow have EVER used or advocated such rhetoric. What I do know is that there are “allied” group such as Anonymous who are NOT above using violent, misogynistic or racial rhetoric when it fits their anarchist spirits.
Now. The first officer’s funeral is Saturday. Prior to this I ddin’t expect huge protest on Christmas day. The 2nd officer’s family live both abroad and in NYC. So they have not scheduled his funeral until they could get his Chinese family to US for funeral. So the proposal is that ALL protest stop until both officers funeral services. Now that would mean no protest of any kind for 2 weeks. A good way to get the movement to die.
I said that I can see protest stopping in NYC.
I don’t think protest across country should stop. The murder is being linked to both Ferguson and Garner.
But hey, when will we learn if the police who killed 12 year old Tamir Rice, when/if those officers are not indicted, then will that be okay for protests to continue.

@Scott Alloway: I bought a book to collect the state quarters and I can’t tell you the joy I felt when I finally found the very last quarter to complete the set (2 of each). It was fun. I know the whole set is only worth $25 but that wasn’t the point.
Now I have a book for the national park quarters and I have half of the coins that have been issued so far. They’re harder to find than the state quarters so adding one to the book is pretty satisfying.

Turned the position down after visiting the town. Just. Couldn’t. Live. There. Not no way, not no how.

Yeah, that's a gnarly patch. Although it breaks up the monotony!
I can do NoVA-Atlanta in about 11 hours, but that's a long day, not that scenic, and, like I said, it doesn't balance well against flying and having more time with friends. I did it in 2012 because I had just bought my car and hadn't done a road trip in forever.

@raven: And I still ask, what was the point of the question you asked me as it relates to what I wrote initally about not agreeing with the complete ending of protests.
BTW, even “rhetorical questions” have some intent behind them.
So I’d like to know what exactly in my interactions on BJ or with you personally lead you to leap to that question in response to my comment?
IMHO, it seemed like a radical jump from my simple comment.
But whatever, it was “rhetorical”

@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet: My dad owned a small business across the street from the town bank. He went over to get some change one day and when he broke open a roll of dimes he discovered that the whole roll was worn-out silver mercury dimes. He went right back to the same window to get some more dimes and wound up with 4-5 rolls of nothing but silver dimes. I wound up with them and sold a bunch when a silver buyer was offering 21x face value.

@I’mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
Someplace in the deep, dark recesses of a closet is a box holding about $100 of pennies which I put into rolls over the years when a kidlet. The newest rolls would have been made in early ’64.
Doubt they are worth much, but almost certainly a preponderance of wheat cents.
Also several $2 silver certificate bills in there and some low denomination United Sates Notes as well, IIRC.

Since I don’t use that door usually, only reason I found out was from checking the tracking sites. I know there is pressure on the drivers to cut down delivery cycle time, but fuck that noise.

Okay, last comment on Montalbano, for the time being.
If anyone’s watching tonight and wondering about the lira amounts being tossed around, you can roughly divide by 2,000 to get the equivalent in dollars. A little later in the series they switch to euros and it becomes less murky.

@Steeplejack: Is Inspector Montalbano on dvd?
BruceFromOhio
@Schlemazel: Immune, no. Less prone to “Gee, he’s a swell guy, I’ll do exactly what he says to do,” plus possessing just a little, tiny bit of basic intelligence. For example, more prone to researching a stock to understand the company, its leadership, its history, its performance, cash flow, market niche or opportunity, competitors, outlook, all in context with the larger economy in which we all just happen to live, in contrast to “Glen Beck said I should invest in sticking pins in my eyelids to make money, so pass the pin-cushion, honey, we’ll be one-percentinin’ in no time!”
Although to your point, ignorance knows no bounds. YMMV.

@Steeplejack: yes, I have seen many episodes of Montalbano. There are apparently some when Montalbano is much younger with a different actor.. The real dud is the old Italian ‘mystery’ show about Father something the priest who solves mysteries.
Steeplejack
@catclub:
Okay, my gag order is off!
Young Montalbano is a separate “prequel” series that sucks big-time. None of the characters remotely resembles his later counterpart, and the plots and acting are pretty pedestrian, if not outright awful. Miss it if you can!
And, yeah, Don Matteo. That’s the weak link in the MHz lineup right now. Sort of saccharine—like the MHz equivalent of Murder, She Wrote. [Shudder]
In general, if there are clunkers on MHz, they tend to be the Italian shows. Donna Detective was a weird combination of a cop show and a soap opera, and Inspector Coliandro was “comedic” in a really broad, “not really that funny” way.

@Anne Laurie: If you ever get to the UK, they sell the generic Flonase over the counter. You do have to ask the pharmacist for it but it’s available without prescription. It also comes in a smaller version than the one here in the US, so that’s good for carrying on an airplane.
