Isn't 007 supposed to handsome? Glad you think I've got a shot! Happy New year people. pic.twitter.com/3g9lAl2Uo3

Even apart from making Limbaugh’s head explode, I say the first requirement for a good James Bond is a proper degree of self-mockery — which Mr. Elba obviously possesses.
And speaking of mockery, via Dave Weigel, the sorriest “victim” of the great Interview kerfuffle to date. Per Variety:
… A man in Ohio tried to cash in on the buzz surrounding Seth Rogen and James Franco’s new comedy when he purchased $650 in tickets or 50 passes at $13 each to the movie.
According to WCPO in Cincinnati, Jason Best learned that a local theater in Clifton was among the 300 theaters to play the controversial film on Christmas Day and hoped to resell the tickets online at a higher price (i.e., he wanted to scalp them)…
But the plan backfired once Sony announced it was streaming the film online for half the price on sites like YouTube, Hulu and Netflix…
It turns out Best had purchased the tickets from movietickets.com, which specifically warns on its website that theater owners reserve the right to withhold refunds for special events.
Plus the manager said that scalping tickets was illegal…
Though, if only Mr. Best had 49 friends with no other plans that evening, he could’ve thrown quite the party.
Violet
That’s a funny picture. I think he’d be a great Bond.

Oh, Cincinnati. That theater he’s talking about, The Esquire, is right around the corner from my restaurant. It’s a mainstay in the community and knowing the owners is not exactly a conservative film house. I get why they showed it, but wow, scalping movie tickets to an art house in a rather urban area of my beloved city?
I can’t stop laughing. Also, props to Weigel because this angle is getting exactly no play in Cincinnati.
Also too, Steelers Dey. Congrats. Bengals are off to Indy. We’re still alive!! (that game hurt)

Bad. It goes bad. That’s how it goes.

… making Limbaugh’s head explode,
limbaugh should be shaken, not stirred.
jl
@chrome agnomen: something inside Limbaugh’s head exploded long ago. We are still dealing with the aftershocks.
BillinGlendaleCA
@jl:
Limbaugh should be the new poster boy for a drug free america, “This is Your Brain on Drugs”.
NotMax
Something about the whole ‘we were majorly hacked, so please give your credit card number to see the movie online’ thing is ironic.
BillinGlendaleCA
Looks like it’s going to be warmer here than last night, 42 and holding steady.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: It’s 57 here.
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: It’s going to get colder for New Years Eve for those (fool)hardy souls that sleep out for the Rose Parade. I did it one year; I was in college and young and I had plenty of, eh, antifreeze.
Viva BrisVegas
@Violet:
I agree, but I thought the problem with Daniel Craig was that he was getting too old for Bond at 46. Yet Idris Elba is 42.
If they were serious about a new Bond, they would be looking at someone in their early 30s. Connery was 32 for Dr No.
Chiwetel Ejiofor is also talked about, but at 37 even he is probably a tad old for the part.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: We moved to LA in 57 and my mom was there from then until she died and she never got to the parade. We went to the game in 84 but never the parade.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Viva BrisVegas: 42 is the new 32.
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: I went with a bunch of folk from my dorm in 79-80.
I went to the game in 1986 and 1999.
Tommy
Bond has to look good in a tux. I could care less his skin color.
OzarkHillbilly
@Viva BrisVegas: The problem with Craig isn’t that he’s getting too old, it’s that he’s feeling too old (doesn’t want to do it anymore). Or at least, that’s the version I’ve heard.
BillinGlendaleCA
I’m thinking of learning WordPress; yes I’m a masochist, why do you ask?
Tommy
@BillinGlendaleCA: I do WordPress for a living so ask away if you have any qustions.
Alex S.
I think James Bond should be played by an Asian woman.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Alex S.: Works for me.
@Tommy: Hosting, I guess would be the place to start, GoDaddy has $12 for a year. Are they any good?
raven
@Tommy: RE convoys. Here’s what they looked like. Wasn’t that hard, you loaded the truck, got in line and headed out. We’d leave before sunup and get to the Phu Tho Racetrack on the South side of Saigon. Then we’d wait for the MP’s to sweep the road and we’d haul ass. Sometimes we’d get loaves of fresh french bread in the villages we’d pass through.
Tommy
@BillinGlendaleCA: I use GoDaddy with most of my clients because I refuse to charge them $5.00 a month for hosting. Set up emails and do that stuff. GoDaddy might have the best customer support I’ve ever dealt with.
With that said you shouldn’t pay more than about $4.99 a month. Intro plan and more than you need.
raven
@Tommy: Oh yea, when we’d get to Vinh Long and Can Tho we had to take civilian ferries across the Mighty Mekong. You could only get a couple of duece and a half’s on the damn things so it could take a while to get across.

BillinGlendaleCA
@Tommy: Thanks, I’ll probably sign up for a year. $1 a month didn’t sound bad.
raven
@Tommy: How much is it after the first year?
eta ” Bundle renewal price with .com after first year is $11.99/mo. “
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: Cancel after the first year, seems doable.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: Yea but then whatcha gonna do?
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: Being that it’s for learning, not sure it matters.
Tommy
@raven: I was not there. I have no idea how hard that must have been. My father tells me he is ashamed that he couldn’ got to Vitemem. Broke both his legs jumping out of plane in military high school. The Army would not take him. I’ve said to him over and over again when others walked away you tired to server.
raven
@Tommy: Wasn’t that hard when you were 18.
raven

@raven:
Heh… Made me think of a carpenter I’ve worked with a few times… Last day in country in Iraq (’06 I think) he pulls turret duty for Tail End Charlie on a convoy across Baghdad. About the halfway point their Humvee starts coughing and spitting and the radio won’t work for some reason or other and they are all screaming at the driver and watching the convoy disappear around a corner, and my buddy keeps saying to himself, “My last fvckin’ day, my last fvckin’ day, I’m gonna die on my last fvckin’ day…”
Tommy
@raven: Harder when I was older.
raven
@OzarkHillbilly: Ha, I had to run one when I had about a week left and it sucked. We’d always say that you wanted to get killed early in your tour so you didn’t have to put up with all the bullshit and then die!
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: He sure did have a long list of things we should do in Afg. These folk, really need to reduce their goal set. We CANNOT remake that “country”, we CANNOT make the Taliban go away(they live there).
Woodrow/Asim
@Alex S.: I suspect you mean it as a joke, but I would love to see Ming-Na Wen playing James Bond — no joke at all. I’m sure a clever enough script can manage the “but you’re a woman?” issues, and she’d be amazing in the role.
OzarkHillbilly
@raven: My little brother has been working on cataloging and digitizing all my old man’s stuff from WWII and Korea amongst witch is his induction into the Order of the Purple Shaft with Barbed Cluster. He got them his last day in Korea.

@BillinGlendaleCA: Why host at all?
Bitnami has local install packages available. Very easy to install and use. Most of the “learn wordpress/drupal/joomla” books I’ve seen start with installing a local stack of some sort.
Raven
@OzarkHillbilly: Hell yes!

Bought some shea butter this summer, and wow, does my part-Irish skin, in New England, need it now. Can’t believe how much I slatered on my face just to have it sink right in.
raven
@OzarkHillbilly: Great pictures.

Finished up day 4 of leftovers from holiday din-din: French onion soup, prime rib and fixin’s. Still have a little less than half the standing rib roast to get to. Been trying to get one particular friend to come over and share the bounty but he keeps coming up with excuses; his loss.
If I could afford eat this stuff every day, wouldn’t make a peep of complaint.
Monday afternoon shall be spent spending way too much scratch for groceries to prepare for New Year’s party, an annual budgetary indulgence.

@NotMax
Should add that after going 12+ years without a working stove and full-size oven (two burner hotplate and countertop oven did yeoman service), going all out with the proper equipment is a distinct delight.
PurpleGirl
Taking a second look at Idris Elba’s picture, I like the self-deprecation of his comment. He has a good sense of humor.
Mr Stagger Lee
@wasabi gasp: The song is 40 years old! OH GOD, father time will you slow it down!!! :-)
Gin & Tonic
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism: Good advice. For learning, just install it on your local machine. Don’t have to pay anyone.
Dave
@Tommy: I can’t speak for what Raven did but the reality is it’s surprisingly easy. Even if you are in small fights almost every patrol, IED’s, mines, even casualties.. I suspect people imagine it’s harder than it is because it’s so far outside of the experience of a safe existence. The sad truth is that just about anything can be normalized. Now depending on the duration and intensity of experiences it can fuck you up something good but at the time it seems fairly normal. Or other times just too tired to give a rats ass.
I don’t like the fetishizing of the military especially when those serving buy into it. Especially when they haven’t really seen the shit or their time was spent drinking coffee in the Green Zone (and not to denigrate everyone has a job and isolation etc etc can certainly cause issues itself). I like it even less for the police; who when they act decently certainly deserve respect (but so do social workers, EMT’s, etc people that deal with same crap but don’t have the option to resort to force) but really aren’t living in a war zone day after day. It boggles my mind that people don’t seem to understand that police are civilians, that an organization empowered to use force against fellow citizens needs more oversight not less (and that’s as someone whom is fairly forgiving of errors made in ambiguous circumstances).
Addendum for military and hell police if people are hurt physically emotionally whatever we so have a responsibility to take care of them. Now take that advocacy with a grain of salt if you want cause I’m one of them so benefit from that but I think it’s a fairly defensible position. Responsibility and whatnot.

@Woodrow/Asim: They could say that “James Bond” is a cover name that can be assigned to any agent, but that might remind people of the first Casino Royale.
lol
@Woodrow/Asim:
I was going to say “she’s got to be almost as old as Craig now too” but holy crap, she’s 51. Amazing.
Mnemosyne
@Viva BrisVegas:
I want Idris Elba to play Bond and Chiwetel Ejiofor to be the next Doctor. Which entertainment gods do I need to make a sacrifice to in order to make this happen?

@Woodrow/Asim: Best idea I’ve seen all day.
