Ouch. RT @anamariecox: Rubio's A- term paper. http://t.co/cjXhVYaeI2 pic.twitter.com/Zmntm69Hvi
— Daniel Drezner (@dandrezner) January 13, 2015
@dandrezner @anamariecox Quite a kicker for a review that could have been entitled: "I Think Rubio's Book Isn't Good Because I'm a Liberal."
— Ross Douthat (@DouthatNYT) January 13, 2015
@Bro_Pair @DouthatNYT @Mobute man you can't even control yourself enough to use "entitled" correctly? Is that just a defensive term now?
— Tyler Walker (@sportzboytjw) January 13, 2015
Damn, another day where I failed to meet the expectations of a human punchline.

Gotta admit – “Man-Sized Merkin” would be a great name for a garage band…
bago
Real Merkins 4 a pubic option!!!

Vance Maverick
Douthat used “entitled” just fine according to my dictionary. Am I missing something?
Omnes Omnibus
@Vance Maverick: Yes, that the tweet capture had little to do with that particular word.
mazareth
Had to look up “merkin.” If the wig fits, wear it.
trollhattan
Chunky Reese isn’t even trying anymore. That’s “I know you are but what am I?” territory.
Mancrush on Marco? Ross, you scamp.

Hey bago, I just saw last nights seattle meet up thread. you going?
Kropadope
@Vance Maverick: He should have used “titled,” not “entitled.”
Suzanne
Weird question for the ladies: has anyone ever gotten a fitting at that store Intimacy? Not sure if worth it.
ruemara
Sorry, but “Man-sized Merkin” might detract from my nickname for Chuck Todd, “Face Merkin Supermodel”.
Violet
@Suzanne: Never even heard of it before–had to look it up. Is the fitting free? Might be worth it.
Re: the discussion the other night, wanted to say that you have the right to be happy and comfortable in your own home. If your mom’s stuff in the garage is stressing you out then it’s fine for you to decide that it needs to go–to a storage place or elsewhere–so you can park in the garage. Similarly, finding a way to keep the house more organized is reasonable because it’s important you be able to relax when you come home after a hard day at work.
There are organizers that specialize in working with seniors and there are also some who work with hoarders. You might also check with a local senior move manager (check NASMM for one near you). They are experienced in helping seniors downsize and move and while your mom has already done the move part she downsized everything into your garage and that isn’t working. Hiring a professional of any sort might work better than you getting into the same arguments with your mom.
Also, AL’s suggestion of getting your older daughter to help pick up the things your mom leaves around and giving her a bonus to her allowance or some other incentive sounded like a good idea. Wasn’t sure you had seen that suggestion, so thought I’d mention it.
Suzanne
@Violet: Thanks. I am kind of stuck b/c I don’t really have the cash to hire a pro, and she already lost a storage unit, so I don’t know what to do. I am just going to hide in my room.
Online reviews of Intimacy are mixed. I really don’t want to spend $100 per item. Eff.

@Suzanne:
I haven’t gone to that particular store, but if you’re on the busty side, it’s definitely worth seeking out a specialty (not chain) store and getting fitted. The huge one out here is the Wizard of Bras in Monrovia. They measure you and then bring stuff in for you to try on regardless of what the size tag says, because they know how the bras from different manufacturers fit. That’s how I ended up with a 34F to wear with a particular dress (because it was low cut at the front, I needed a lot of extra side support, and that size did the job).
Also, I didn’t get back to that other thread, but I highly recommended the book “Crucial Conversations” (2nd edition) to help you talk to your mom. I’m putting its lessons to the test for a work conversation tomorrow that’s at least 3 years overdue, so we’ll see how it goes.

Lund’s second-last paragraph is a hoot:
That last line is the best summation of Republican blathering since “a noun, a verb and 9/11.”
Violet
My comment ended up in moderation. Guess I said a forbidden word. Trying again:
@Suzanne: Wow! That’s a lot of money! Stupid b r a s. So expenisve and you’re supposed to treat them like priceless woks of art. It’s underwear. Ugh.
A good professional organizer shouldn’t be that expensive. You could probably get a free consult and see if you could develop a plan going forward. Hang in there.

It occurs to me that the right-wing, especialy over this decade, has become very, very obsessed with attractiveness and attractive people. Ryan, Rubio, Palin, the endless parade of bleach-blonde bimbettes on FAUX “News”….
If this keeps up, I wonder if it’ll become sufficiently absurd to short-circuit the well-studied human bias towards attractive people in political and employment success. Maybe we can undo this fault in human nature, and maybe the right-wing will help us get there faster.
Cause there are more of us ugly motherfuckers than there are of them, so, hey, watch out.
Violet
@Suzanne: Keep trying to reply but ending up in moderation. That is really expensive. Wow.

@srv: Please tell me that is The Onion.

I just saw photographic proof that, at ages 15 and 12, my niece and nephew are already nerdy enough to dress up to go to a convention. I couldn’t be prouder.
(They apparently went to a Pokemon convention dressed as characters from “Gravity Falls.” Their mom took them and dressed up a bit herself.)
MattR
@Vance Maverick: I don’t get it either. Entitled is synonymous with titled in that usage.
Vance Maverick
@Kropadope: Why do you say that? The words are both valid for this meaning.
Anne Laurie
@MattR: “Entitled” is more pretentious… as is Ross Doubt-that.
wasabi gasp
Is that a liberal agenda in your pocket or are you just hippie to tweet me?
bago
@Mike J: Possibly. The notions of going that far north could be problematic.

I’ve got to admit, that book review would constitute a fair critique of near all my posts on various blogs over the years.

This man needs bail and a good lawyer. I’ll chip in:
“A former bartender at an Ohio country club frequented by House Speaker John Boehner allegedly thought the Republican was the devil and had threatened to kill him, according to a report Tuesday from WCOP in Cincinnati”.

@srv:
Just out of sheer curiosity, how would these proposed “hate crimes” penalties impact the existing laws that most states already have that enhance the penalty for a crime if you kill or injure a cop? Will those laws be invalidated and the hate crime law be used instead? If someone gets convicted of killing a cop and gets a death sentence, can we dig them up and kill them a second time for the hate crime part?
(Edited to add weird link)
Topmmy
@fuckwit: Nope as another person mentioned here there are a number of articles out there on this and it is a “real” thing. IMHO I could almost get behind the idea. Almost. But the police are really making their “own beds” at this point. Look I get they have a tough, if not at times almost impossible job. It can also be dangerous and even a deadly job. They get paid shit (like teachers, firefighters, many others that work for us as the public).
But then you have yahoos like the head of the Union in NYC. Or Cleveland. They say the most stupid shit and any desire I have to stick up for them is lost in the amount of time it takes me drink a cup of coffee. I get it is the job of the Union, and therefor the leaders of the Union to stick up for their members.
However hasn’t it come a time when the members might say to the Union bosses, “would you please just shut the fuck up, you are really not doing us any favors at this point. I know you think you are, but you are not!”

“Entitled” is fine. That was a lame tweet.
Woodrowfan
“entitled” was a somewhat archaic usage, fitting for Mr. Chunky Reese. A better point would have been to ask if he’d bothered to read Rubio’s book yet himself…
Vance Maverick
Beating a dead horse while nobody’s watching, but the Grammarist entry just points out that “titled” is more common than “entitled”, by three to one (though they only seem to have tried it with “book”).
Howlin Wolfe
@Kropadope: Either one is correct, at least according to Dictionary.com. I’ve seen it used many times the way Douchehat used it. Doesn’t make him a good writer, but that’s not the reason he’s bad.
JoyfulA
@Howlin Wolfe: I always delete the “en” when copyediting and often delete the “titled” when the author is merely naming a book or article. It’s fussy, pompous wordiness.
I think the joke might have been that Douthat was thinking “entitlements.”
