Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

This fight is for everything.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Ouch. RT @anamariecox: Rubio's A- term paper. http://t.co/cjXhVYaeI2 pic.twitter.com/Zmntm69Hvi

— Daniel Drezner (@dandrezner) January 13, 2015

@dandrezner @anamariecox Quite a kicker for a review that could have been entitled: "I Think Rubio's Book Isn't Good Because I'm a Liberal."

— Ross Douthat (@DouthatNYT) January 13, 2015

@Bro_Pair @DouthatNYT @Mobute man you can't even control yourself enough to use "entitled" correctly? Is that just a defensive term now?

— Tyler Walker (@sportzboytjw) January 13, 2015

Damn, another day where I failed to meet the expectations of a human punchline.

— Jeb Lund (@Mobute) January 13, 2015

.

Gotta admit – “Man-Sized Merkin” would be a great name for a garage band…

You can only kick a dog so much:

The 300,000-member Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is demanding that the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama “act now” to expand the federal hate crimes statute and add police officers as a protected class.

In a recent press release, the police union boasts that it has spent years lobbying for more federalization of crime and punishment. The presser cites a handful of recent incidents, nationally, in which police officers were attacked while on the job.

“Enough is enough! It’s time for Congress to do something to protect the men and women who protect us,” said union president Chuck Canterbury.

    Violet

    January 14, 2015 at 1:17 am

@Suzanne: Never even heard of it before–had to look it up. Is the fitting free? Might be worth it.

Re: the discussion the other night, wanted to say that you have the right to be happy and comfortable in your own home. If your mom’s stuff in the garage is stressing you out then it’s fine for you to decide that it needs to go–to a storage place or elsewhere–so you can park in the garage. Similarly, finding a way to keep the house more organized is reasonable because it’s important you be able to relax when you come home after a hard day at work.

There are organizers that specialize in working with seniors and there are also some who work with hoarders. You might also check with a local senior move manager (check NASMM for one near you). They are experienced in helping seniors downsize and move and while your mom has already done the move part she downsized everything into your garage and that isn’t working. Hiring a professional of any sort might work better than you getting into the same arguments with your mom.

Also, AL’s suggestion of getting your older daughter to help pick up the things your mom leaves around and giving her a bonus to her allowance or some other incentive sounded like a good idea. Wasn’t sure you had seen that suggestion, so thought I’d mention it.

@Violet: Thanks. I am kind of stuck b/c I don’t really have the cash to hire a pro, and she already lost a storage unit, so I don’t know what to do. I am just going to hide in my room.

Online reviews of Intimacy are mixed. I really don’t want to spend $100 per item. Eff.

    @Suzanne:

I haven’t gone to that particular store, but if you’re on the busty side, it’s definitely worth seeking out a specialty (not chain) store and getting fitted. The huge one out here is the Wizard of Bras in Monrovia. They measure you and then bring stuff in for you to try on regardless of what the size tag says, because they know how the bras from different manufacturers fit. That’s how I ended up with a 34F to wear with a particular dress (because it was low cut at the front, I needed a lot of extra side support, and that size did the job).

Also, I didn’t get back to that other thread, but I highly recommended the book “Crucial Conversations” (2nd edition) to help you talk to your mom. I’m putting its lessons to the test for a work conversation tomorrow that’s at least 3 years overdue, so we’ll see how it goes.

    Lund’s second-last paragraph is a hoot:

There’s an entire 16-page afterword that might as well be titled, “Foreign Policy Things That Happened While My Staff Was Writing This” that includes Hamas, China continuing “its provocations in the South China Sea,” Venezuela, “a corrupt United Nations”, a shout-out to Ronald Reagan and George Washington (America’s first Ronald Reagan) and the Barbary pirates, something about Ebola and, you guessed it, Benghazi. It’s like a game of Fox News Foreign Policy Bingo.

That last line is the best summation of Republican blathering since “a noun, a verb and 9/11.”

It occurs to me that the right-wing, especialy over this decade, has become very, very obsessed with attractiveness and attractive people. Ryan, Rubio, Palin, the endless parade of bleach-blonde bimbettes on FAUX “News”….

If this keeps up, I wonder if it’ll become sufficiently absurd to short-circuit the well-studied human bias towards attractive people in political and employment success. Maybe we can undo this fault in human nature, and maybe the right-wing will help us get there faster.

Cause there are more of us ugly motherfuckers than there are of them, so, hey, watch out.

Just out of sheer curiosity, how would these proposed “hate crimes” penalties impact the existing laws that most states already have that enhance the penalty for a crime if you kill or injure a cop? Will those laws be invalidated and the hate crime law be used instead? If someone gets convicted of killing a cop and gets a death sentence, can we dig them up and kill them a second time for the hate crime part?

@fuckwit: Nope as another person mentioned here there are a number of articles out there on this and it is a “real” thing. IMHO I could almost get behind the idea. Almost. But the police are really making their “own beds” at this point. Look I get they have a tough, if not at times almost impossible job. It can also be dangerous and even a deadly job. They get paid shit (like teachers, firefighters, many others that work for us as the public).

But then you have yahoos like the head of the Union in NYC. Or Cleveland. They say the most stupid shit and any desire I have to stick up for them is lost in the amount of time it takes me drink a cup of coffee. I get it is the job of the Union, and therefor the leaders of the Union to stick up for their members.

However hasn’t it come a time when the members might say to the Union bosses, “would you please just shut the fuck up, you are really not doing us any favors at this point. I know you think you are, but you are not!”

@Howlin Wolfe: I always delete the “en” when copyediting and often delete the “titled” when the author is merely naming a book or article. It’s fussy, pompous wordiness.

I think the joke might have been that Douthat was thinking “entitlements.”
