I am gearing myself up for Australia/Invasion Day. In the sunny, mush lefty, vegan-friendly ghetto in which I currently reside, it’s a day to briefly acknowledge the traditional owners of the land by having a barbecue and getting drunk.
It’s also the day on which I find out what the young people have been listening to this year. At least, that is, the young people who listen to Triple J. I am told there are young people who listen to Taylor Swift and radio stations called things like 2Day FM and Hitz702, but I don’t believe it’s true.
To the great pleasure of perhaps only me and TheMightyTrowel, I will post a Hottest 100 thread on the day. In the meantime, my list this year was:
San Cisco – RUN
Milky Chance – Stolen Dance
First Aid Kit – My Silver Lining
Die Antwoord – Pitbull Terrier
Chvrches – Strong Hand
Beth Ditto x The Shoes – Cerrone’s Supernature
Architecture In Helsinki – I Might Survive
Porter Robinson – Lionhearted {Ft. Urban Cone}
Sia – Chandelier
Röyksopp – Monument (The Inevitable End Version) {Ft. Robyn}
Given the chance again, I’d probably swap Robert DeLong’s Acid Rain and Porter Robinson’s Hear the Bells in there for Beth Ditto and for the Die Antwoord track (which I only voted for because of the video, which is, I suspect, highly NSFW, and which I have therefore placed after the jump).
What did you vote for, kiddies?

My Fav radio station Yay! JJJ rocks
handy for Insomniacs on this side of the world too.
Once they called in to a radio station I had on in my car in NY during one of the woodstocks, both stations played the call live which was cool.

That makes me so happy.

Here’s how you know you’re officially Out Of It. When you look at that list and can’t figure out if the band is on the left and the song title is on the right or if the song is on the left and the band is on the right.
It’s so hard to keep up! I need to quit the day job!!!

What kind of Australia Day music is this stuff?
Waltzing Matilda Bagpipes (Anzac Day 2011)

I can hear some kind of noise that sounds sort of like Waltzing Matilda come through the bagpipes for a few sporadic seconds. Well, good enough, then.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Amazing, isn’t it?
Violet
@Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason: I’m with you. I think the singer/group/band is on the left because I know Sia and the song Chandelier. But that’s it. I’m out of it.

My only remotely hip discovery last year: Teddybears.

Unrelated to Oz, just got the new Decemberists and Belle and Sebastian albums. Haven’t even had a chance to listen yet.
Eagerly awaiting the new Death Cab for Cutie, even without Chris Walla.

Brit newcomer Rae Morris is a fun listen and Joywave’s “Tongues” is a great tune with a freaky video to accompany it.
I’m not sure whether Die Antwoord needs to get on some pills or to quick taking so bloody many of them. Seriously.

@Mike in NC: Men at Work? INXS?

@Violet: If you want to piss off the kiwis, add split enz/crowded house/finn brothers in the Australia list. Probably Lorde too.

At the moment, something ironic, possibly Dixie Chicken. Or maybe Born Under A Bad Sign, because of this guy. I saw this headline and honest to jeebus felt my blood pressure increasing right that second. From Raw Story, not the Onion, I am totally sorry to say.
Bill Clinton used billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘Lolita Express’ for African charity tour
To our blog hostess with the mostest, ’cause she will undoubtedly know better than anyone else: Is Bill Clinton a complete fuckstick, or have poor impulse control? Or all of the above?
Edit: Or does he have early onset Alzheimers and hence has totally lost his feel for political optics?

The New Basement Tapes from EMI Music Australia. Best album this year. Also a movie on one of the movie channels. Looks like much of it is on YouTube.

I think “Take Me To Church” is my favorite of the year. “Riptide” and “unbelievers” and “Stolen Dance” and “Harlem” are all up there, too.
Petorado
@Mike in NC: The Hoodoo Gurus were another Aussie band of that same vintage. But even the locals rock out down under.

Damn. That was disturbing. I thought zumba was a cult, but zumba with Big Hair?
I need some KMFDM to wash my brain out.

@Mike J:
New Decemberists is good. Belle & Sebastian is not to my taste.
You neglected to mention the best new album of the week, IMO: Sleater-Kinney are back, and they are better than ever.

while she’s celebrating Australia Day, I don’t think that means the bands are Aussies. First Aid Kit is definitely a couple of sisters from Sweden, and I think Chvrches are either an Irish or Scottish electronica group.
As far as newer stuff, if you are a fan of excellent harmonies, and solid songwriting, check out the Milk Carton Kids, just 2 dudes & 2 acoustic guitars. Something that rocks, check out The Front Bottoms.
An excellent resource for newer bands, and new stuff from older more obscure artists is NPR’s Tiny Desk concerts,

When my neighbor invites his friends and family to get drunk and loud in his backyard, I don’t meet with them either. Coincidence?
ETA: That pitbull vid is disturbing.

@Mike J:
Jesus, those two are my newest also. The Belle and Sebastien is wonderful, like always. And like you, haven’t had the time to give the Decemberists a proper listen.

Late to the party as always but dropping in at the bottom of the thread to suggest y’all check out Thelma Plum. She was on my top 10 this year and is a staggeringly talented 19 year old Brisbane singer.
