Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The lights are all blinking red.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

We still have time to mess this up!

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Everybody saw this coming.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Funk legend Sly Stone, who was living in a van a few years back, was awarded $5 million in damages after an LA jury found that business managers had ripped him off. I hope he can collect from the vultures.

Done shoveling for a while (there’s a ~30 foot stretch around the corner that needs it, but it’s capped by plow leavings so fuck it).

We went sledding on the lower half of the hill (below the tot lot) because the big kids were sledding uphill on the PD’s snow mound. Good, since WarriorGirl likes to eat snow, and that stuff wasn’t clean.

Depth is about 22 inches in Watertown, most channels through the snow are in the neighborhood of 30 inches high right now. The mound uphill of our driveway is 6.5 feet high, and downhill is about 4 feet. My neighbor’s non-crazy son put a plow on the end of his truck and cleared out their driveway, and didn’t cover up the sidewalk cuts from either side (yay!). The crazy* son tried shoveling yesterday with less-than-stellar results.

(May not be crazy but the local PD thinks he is, so they don’t arrest him, but send him to Mount Auburn.)

School is back on for tomorrow.

When I was growing up in the NY suburbs in the early 70’s, I was warned by all my friends never to buy tickets to a Sly & the Family Stone concert. He never showed. That isn’t completely true, he showed at Woodstock and apparently one time at Madison Square Garden after keeping the crowd waiting for them for over 2 hours, Sly ran up on the stage, announces someone was trying to kill him and left. I bought the albums because that was some good stuff. Never bought a concert ticket though.

Gogol’s Wife is correct. IIRC Mitchell was once a reporter. Now, she interprets Biden’s random facial expressions in public meetings to provide insight into what a terrible POTUS Barry has been and how terribly they have treated a guy. Then she tells us of all the ways in which Hagel was not up to the job. She not as sickmaking as Jonathan Karl but she comes close.

I loved most early Sly–that Woodstock medley was incredible–but he made three perfect singles (actually, two were on one 45): “Hot Fun In The Summertime”, and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” b/w “Everybody Is A Star”. Then came cocaine excess, and we got two more that were great, but not perfect–”Family Affair”, and “If You Want Me To Stay”. (Actually, “There’s A Riot Goin’ On” and “Fresh”, the albums those two came from were pretty wonderful as well.)

What a tragic waste, but I don’t think even $5 million can put Sly Stone’s genius back together again…at very least, he’ll be comfortable.

In a van down by the river?

Sorry, not mocking. I too hope he gets every nickel cheated from him.

Love the Sly Stone medley from the original “PeeWee’s Playhouse.”

@Betty Cracker: you’re not wrong. The triptych I named were (IMHO) perfect pieces of pop music…and “Thank You” was Sly finding that funk, which he perfected in “If You Want Me To Stay”.

By the way, even though it’s long out of print, the first CD version of “Fresh” that CBS released in the States (1991) was erroneously mastered from a different tape, with alternate takes of every song except “In Time”. It’s effing amazing.

@Roger Moore: Since you seem to know weapons, here’s an idle question for you: In WW2, the German 88 was acknowledge as a premier, superb shooter. Why didn’t the allies- or even the Soviet Union- copy it down to the last bolt, and mass produce it for their own troops?

@raven: I was at that Grant Park concert. It was quite a scene……………….the crowd had been there all day, partying in every sense of the word. Sly, of course, had a reputation for not showing up for shows, so when the opening act hit the stage maybe an hour late, everybody assumed he was gonna do it again and the place went nuts. I looked up toward the sky and all I could see was bottles, flying at the stage, so I decided to go somewhere else……………….as I was leaving I saw guys coming in with cans (yeah, cans, punks) of motor oil with rags stuffed in the top. Good times.

Apparently Sly WAS there and was going to play, but it obviouSLY didn’t happen. Bummer, man…………..it was a pretty good party, though, until the shit hit.

@John Revolta: There were only two times in my concert going days that I witnessed San Francisco crowds get agitated about a show running late. The second time was at a Led Zeppelin concert at Kezar Stadium; the first was Sly & The Family at Winterland, and he must have hit the stage at least 3 hours later than scheduled. My memories of that night aren’t particularly sharp, but that I do remember.

@Schlemazel: Your honest appraisal may make a difference. I would tell them, in the most dispassionate way you can.

@Tree With Water: Soviet Union had artillery every bit as good as the 88. Don’t know why we didn’t. Might have been very hard to machine a copy, already heavily invested in our own artillery, etc.?
