From our Food Goddess, TaMara:
I am still fighting this cold, I’m chasing after a 105 lb willful puppy, I’m buried by mortgage paperwork, and suddenly it’s time for the Super Bowl and the recipe exchange. So I had no choice but to pull out a classic recipe exchange, my favorite snacks, tortilla pinwheels. From 2012:
It’s that time again. Super Bowl Sunday, when you sit down to stuff your face with favorite snack foods, drink beer and watch the Super Bowl Commercials. I think there is some football in there somewhere.
You can’t go wrong with nachos – easy and easy to pile high with your favorites ingredients.
Here’s rather healthy (?) version: Black Bean and Corn Nachos, recipe here.
JeffreyW gets a little more creative with his pizzas, here , here, here and if you want to see them all, here (the man does love a good pizza).
And I think Chili is always a crowd-pleaser, so a variety can be found here.
And for the animal lovers, Bixby puts down his tug ball long enough to update on his life to date.
I’ll never turn down nachos, or pizza for that matter, but when I was thinking about favorite party foods, tortilla pinwheels came up pretty quickly. So many things you can do with them. Four variations follow.
Now it’s your turn, what are you planning on making this Sunday and more importantly what beer are you serving? Who has the best recipe for hot wings, a football must have food?Tonight’s featured recipes, a variety of flavors, but don’t let that limit you:
Basic Tortilla Pinwheels
1 (8 ounce) package whipped cream cheese
10 (10 inch) flour tortillas
1/2 cup green onions, chopped
1/4 cup black olives, chopped (optional)
3/4 cup chopped ham slicesYou spread the ingredients on the tortillas, roll them up and slice them into 1 inch pinwheels. Couldn’t get much easier.
So how do we add some dazzle? Flavored tortillas and a variety of fillings.
Here are some ideas I had:
Jalapeño & Cilantro Tortillas and Black Bean Tortillas
Cream Cheese
Pickled jalapenos
Sliced green chilies
Turkey
Salsa
Black olives
Shredded cheddar cheese
Roasted Red Pepper Tortillas and Sun-dried Tomato & Basil Tortillas
Cream cheese mixed with crushed roasted garlic
Spinach
Pepperoni
Grated parmesanPlain Tortillas and Whole Wheat Tortillas
Cream cheese
All-fruit style strawberry preserves
Crushed red pepper flakesThe list is endless, limited only by your creativity.
That’s it for this week. Next week I’ll try and put something together for Valentine’s Day. – TaMara

So is there both a Puppy Bowl and a Kitten Bowl again this year? I haven’t been keeping up.
burnspbesq
At least there is some football on Sunday. Arsenal-Aston Villa at 5:30 a.m. Pacific, followed by Southampton-Swansea at 8:00.
TaMara (BHF)
@Mnemosyne (iPad Mini): Seems Hallmark is doing the kitteh bowl again. One of the local news stations is having both during the newscasts (morning and 4 pm) using local shelter puppies and kitties. Adorable and seems to be getting a lot of adoptions.
MomSense
@Mnemosyne (iPad Mini):
I hope so.
Tamara, Bixby looks wonderful.
I’m not sure what to make but I’m thinking burritos, nachos, and lots of guacamole.
burnspbesq
Those nachos look awesome, but 5:30 a.m. is not Nacho Time. There could be a halftime donut run on the cards, however.
Arsenal is the kid’s neighborhood club, so I am a temporary Gooner for the next three years while he’s in school in Euston and living around the corner from Finsbury Park.
TaMara (BHF)
@MomSense: Thank you. He’s busy right now trying to get his dinner of the the new treat container (a 3 qt, rectangular plastic pitcher with a handle – can’t quite roll it, can’t just dump it out. I’m evil).
@burnspbesq: Maybe Mrs. J’s fried fruit pies?
BGinCHI
@burnspbesq: Go Saints!

@TaMara (BHF): What kind of dog is Bixby, aside from being the cute kind?

Who knew tomatillos would grow like mad where we live, just outside Seattle?
I roasted them with some onions and garlic and jalapeños with a little olive oil and salt, and then threw it all into a blender. The green salsa with blue corn chips is a no-brainer for my daughter’s Super Bowl party in Seattle.
Since this is a potluck I’m making lasagne with homemade sausage from the biannual Sausage Fest sausage-making party, and sauce from our tomatoes, which have been lurking in the freezer since August and it’s time, as well as the last of the home grown onions.
I usually bring dessert but I’m not inspired this year. I think I might just drizzle some melted semi-sweet chocolate over fresh raspberries, tucked into store-bought puff pastry cups, maybe sprinkle some almond slivers on top. They look like I fussed and they taste good.
TaMara (BHF)
@Pogonip: He is a Great Dane. He’s actually an American/European mix. He’s my first puppy – the rest of my Danes were rescues. But I’ve known this breeder for years and really liked her and her dogs, so, voila, Bixby.
I believe I am totally crazy for getting a puppy. Adult dogs = SO MUCH EASIER (but I love him to pieces)
TaMara (BHF)
@opiejeanne: I LOVE tomatillos. And every time I’ve grown them, they grew like weeds.
Pogonip
No party for me this year. Laugh and the world laughs with you, cough and sneeze and you watch the commercials alone. And no Puppy Bowl this year, as we got rid of the cable and on everything else the screen is too small to do it justice. Usually I Super Bowl with people who have the commercials on one TV and the Puppy Bowl on another, but alas, this year I am Typhoid Pogonip.
(Just between you and me, with the flu so vicious this year, I’m kind of happy to be a hermit, even if I will miss the Puppy Bowl.)
Should the Super Bowl be moved to a less flu-ish time of year, or would doing so make mid-January thru mid-February even drabber and more boring than they already are? There are things going on outside–gray squirrels breeding, skunks breeding, hibernators peeking out on warm days, skunk cabbage and snowdrops sprouting– but not much happening inside, other than the Suoer Bowl, Valentine’s Day, and Half-Priced Boxed-Chocolate Day.
Pogonip
@TaMara (BHF): He’s a cutie. I love big dogs who think they are lap dogs.
Are European Danes healthier than AKC victims over here? Bixby sounds like such a sweetie, I hope he lives long, into the double-digits.
Mnemosyne (iPad Mini)
I’m probably the last person who’s heard of this, as usual, but G got me hooked on this puzzle/story/game thing called Monument Valley:
http://www.monumentvalleygame.com
It’s not quite a game (at least to me) because there’s no way to win, lose, or even die. You just keep working the puzzles until you figure them out, and there’s no timer. It doesn’t take very long to play through, but it was neat. A bit pricey — $4 for the game and $1.99 for the “midquel” (not quite a sequel, not quite additional levels).
TaMara (BHF)
@Pogonip: Yes, in theory they are. By mixing the two, she’s been successful in breeding out a lot of the health issues – joint and heart – while keeping the sweet temperament. Bixby’s grandpa is a beast – his paws are bigger than any dog I’ve ever seen. He’s shorter and sturdier than an American Dane.
Three of my four rescue danes were clearly badly bred, probably by backyard breeders, and had some serious health issues. I think that is what led me in this direction. I love this breed, it was like a match made in heaven when I adopted my first Dane. Goofy, smart, stubborn…kinda like me. ;-)
Pogonip
(Un)Surprise! The Guardian reports that “The Winds of Winter” will not be published this year. Not sure if anyone cares any more, but mention it in case someone does.
My own opinion , which is worth what you pay for it, is that Martin has grown tired of the thing and figures if he waits long enough HBO will take the problem out of his hands.
raven
@Pogonip: We cancelled ours because the street is still torn up. We’re having a buddy and his wife over and he’s at the tail end of throat cancer treatment and we’re not going to do food to make it easy on him.
Pogonip
@TaMara (BHF): Are your friend’s Danes living past age 6-7? If so, she’s heading in the right direction.
Pogonip
@raven: I wish your friend a speedy recovery.

OT: finally got into an EEG-based intensive psych clinic next week, so I will be kicking depression’s fucking ass in due time.
In related news, three memorial services (three!) tomorrow. Been a rough month.
TaMara (BHF)
@Pogonip: Oh, easily in their teens. With good food and vet care, I was able to get my last three to 10 and 11. My first one died bone cancer at 5.
I know it’s a trade off with big dogs…but when they steal your heart, I guess it’s a trade off I’ve been willing to make.

Oh…wait.

Wow, that looks wonderful — Escher meets Hogwarts meets my “architectural” dreams. I’m ordering it now.

Speaking of puppehs, did everyone see this NASA astronauts official photo with his two dogs. Heart strings plucked.
opiejeanne
@TaMara (BHF): Wouldn’t you think they would like a warmer and drier climate? We bought four little plants at an open-air market near us, discovered that you need to plant them near each other or they won’t produce. These guys just went nuts, crowded everything else out of that bed the first year and provided us with more fruit than we could use. We gave away a lot to people who knew what to do with them, because the things are expensive here, and we froze the rest. Right now they are $1.79/pound in the store, but I’ve seen them for $1 each when ours are ripe.
Uncle Ebeneezer
I dunno about best, but Korean Wings are pretty awesome.
Rough recipe:
2 pounds chicken wings and drumettes
1 inch piece of fresh ginger, minced
2 tsp sesame oil
6 Tbsp soy sauce
3 Tbsp sugar
3 Tbsp honey
5 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 small onion, minced
1 Tbsp red pepper paste (gyochujang)
Combine all the non-meat items into a marinate. Toss wings on grill and slather with leftover sauce as they cook. Delicious. We also add a 1/2 teaspoon or so of chill oil to make them super-spicy. But even without that, the paste gives it a fair amount of heat on it’s own.

I got sucked into looking at my son’s middle school classmates’ instagrams. Most are locked down. But about 25% of them have “S3” in their descriptions, which I can’t decipher and am madly curious about. I have figured out that when they put a date on their description it seems to be the date a relationship started. Margaret Mead, over and out.
Pogonip
@TaMara (BHF): Long may Bixby’s tail wave!

@Major Major Major Major: Sorry about your losses so close together, and I wish you a speedy recovery, too.

The Snackstadium is a Thing, apparently. This is not the one I just saw featured on tv, but it’s pretty close:

Above, I typed “Achoo.”. FY Autocorrect wanted to change it to “a boo.”. Which is kind of cute, even if it doesn’t make much sense.
I am Jonesing for Pringles. I hope that either they have curative properties or will put me out of my misery.

@Pogonip: I’m so sorry you’re sick, I feel for you. I was sick the whole time I was at a cabin in the mountains the past 9 days, so I had to stay inside while outside it was in the 60s and sunny.
TaMara (BHF)
@opiejeanne: I get the sense they are hardy and adaptable. But I don’t know much about them, except they grew really well for me, too.
@Uncle Ebeneezer: Yum.
TaMara (BHF)
@opiejeanne: I do not love my friends/guests enough to build them that. But if someone else wanted to build one for me, looks like fun.
I’m off…must get some more work done. I have no life. Night all.

OMG, Bixby is hilarious! That look on his face when you take away his ball. Bwahahaha! He looks like a gawky teenager. Too cute.

@jibeaux: They have Samsung Galaxy S3s?
Violet
@Pogonip: Hope you feel better soon. I had the flu before Christmas and it kicked my ass. Recovery took time so take it easy. Don’t overdo.
Pogonip
@opiejeanne: Could be the vicious flu; I feel lucky it’s only a bad cold, which I am treating with vitamins, cold pills, chicken soup, Vicks Vaporub, and Pringles. I was only whining because it has made me a pariah on Puppy Bowl weekend. On the other hand, we’re expecting 6 inches of snow Sunday, so I won’t have to dig out to go anywhere. (Number One Son is 75 miles away with Grandpa, safely away from Typhoid Mom, so I can’t ask him if he feels like digging.)
Pogonip
@Violet: That flu this year is ugly. In a previous topic I mentioned the lady who ended up in the ER with a fever of 105, sending out delirious tweets, and noted that the Delirious Tweets would be a good name for a band. She’s OK now and being kidded about the tweets. Glad to hear you too are recovered.
Speaking of tweets, I heard a lone robin chirping today for about an hour. Then he gave up abruptly. Maybe his beak froze shut.
Those who have not done so may want to look for robins in your area during the winter. Quite a few stay around–probably the ones who know about bird feeders–but people don’t think to look for them because they’re so associated with warm weather.
Me, I’m waiting to hear that weird rattling noise the red-winged blackbirds call song. When they kick in, you can expect improvement in the weather within the next 10 days. They are very reliable.

Violet
@Pogonip: Mine only got up to 101, but it was bad. Aches, pains, chills. No appetite. Going from the bed to the bathroom was utterly exhausting, let alone trying to get to the kitchen. I had it while I was home alone and that was rough because there wasn’t much food in the house and I had no one to shop for me or to bring me food. So I just didn’t eat. I finally made myself a scrambled egg after about 24 hours of doing nothing but drinking tap water (all I could manage) and I could only eat about a third of it.
Took me about two weeks to feel somewhat close to normal but it probably took a month or more to get back to feeling right. Energy took a long time to come back.

And sweet-tempered, too — you’ve got that in common as well!
Bixby’s European genes no doubt explain why he looks even more like the dogs in the Unicorn Tapestries than the American Danes I knew & loved. As their Midwestern breeder would remind me, they’ve got enough sighthound in their ancestry that you’ve got to expect a certain amount of charming wilfulness…

@Pogonip: I had one variety of flu this summer, cleared up just in time for a trip to Italy on September 1. We caught another type of flu as we were leaving Italy from a little boy who coughed and sneezed on people, and it started to kick in when we were on the plane coming home. We both had the flu shot last fall but these must not have been the varieties for last year.

I have tried this recipe for Mexicali Thunder Thighs and it’s wonderful – you’ll need to make sure you have Tapatio hot sauce.

It’s from an old post on the Group News Blog – the gang that took over for a couple years after Steve Gilliard passed away. Wow – it’ll be 8 years this June since Steve shuffled of this mortal coil…he would have been 50 this year.

@opiejeanne: They weren’t. The really ugly one, that’s racing through my region like the plague, was not expected to circulate this year and so was not included in last fall’s shots. Glad to hear you are OK now.

I could have sworn I saw this recipe here some years ago, but in case anyone checks back:
Sausage Cheese Footballs & Garlic Tomato Dipping Sauce
Yield: 4 dozen footballs
1 pound hot or mild Italian sausage, casing removed
12 ounces cheddar, grated
3 cups powdered biscuit mix
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
4 scallions, sliced
3/4 cup milk
Preheat oven to 375º. In a sauté pan over medium heat cook Italian sausage. Using a wooden spoon break up the sausage into small pieces. When completely cooked through, remove from pan and drain. Let cool 10 minutes. In a large mixing bowl add cooked sausage, cheddar, biscuit mix, cayenne, scallions, and milk. Mix well to form a dough. (If the dough is too dry, add more milk.) Form into 1 1/2 inch foot balls and place onto a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes.
Chef’s Notes:
These footballs are great dipped in your favorite chili or with our Garlic Tomato Dipping Sauce (see below):
2 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup minced onion
5 minced garlic cloves
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup red wine
1 28-oz. jar tomato sauce (preferably flavored with roasted garlic)
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, sauté onion in olive oil until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add garlic and continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add black pepper and red wine and cook until the wine has reduced by half. Add tomato sauce, bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve hot.
