    @Zinsky: There are many other reasons to be opposed to Christie and the Huckster. Fat shaming does not have to be included in that.

    And Huck is never going to see the inside of the White House as a resident. There aren’t enough white male Evangelists in the country for that.

    Between Terry Schiavo and the following story alone, a person would have to be high on crack to believe Jeb Bush will be elected to the presidency. Huffy Post is reporting:

    My land-line’s been getting lots of calls lately, requesting donations to Fraternal Order of Police Foundation or Nat’l Assoc of Chiefs of Police. I always ask the (always male) caller if he recognizes the names ‘Darren Wilson’ or ‘Patrick Lynch’. None of them ever click to that, so then I ask them if ‘FTP’ means anything to them, then wait ’til they hang up. I guess I’m an old now, FTP/STP was a watchword in 1972, but it’s just crickets nowadays.

    Nice quiet evening at Chez X, fire in the fireplace and late night dinner coming up – Italian sausage parboiled in beer with onions before going under the broiler, to be served on Gonnella rolls with sauteed green peppers and onions and (in my case) Gulden’s spicy brown mustard. Snow coming down like a white curtain, and, as was the case during more than one afternoon at IU Bloomington, listening to Low Spark and feeling the exact opposite of disgruntled.

    @Iowa Old Lady: Short of more revelations, I don’t think Christie has fallen within the confines of the GOP. It’s his “victim of the liberal media” schtick that got him back to rightwing rockstar status. I don’t think he’s electable (at least not in this cycle) but he’s set himself up for some sweet wing nut welfare while– if he can keep some perspective over the next ten or twelve years– he can rehab his image and cultivate the elder statesman posture and win back (to the extent he ever lost them) the MTP/Politico crowd for a future run. He’s very young for a pol.

    Didn’t Huckabee have that weight-loss surgery? I remember some years ago he launched a program to encourage Arkansans to eat better and exercise.

    That cartoon ran before the surgery became popular.

    A fair number of women I work with have had that surgery. With one exception, they all regained most if not all of the weight. So I don’t know if it’s the answer for most people or not. I think the underlying problem is that office life has become so sedentary–you don’t even get up to go to the files anymore–that to maintain anything approaching a normal weight you pretty much have to stay on famine rations, and few people have the discipline to stay hungry for years. And then real life outside your work is increasingly sedentary as well. Look at me. Am I scrubbing walls or floors? Am I training? No’ I’m sitting here typing.

    @danielx: if there was a god Grover Norquist would be on a plane with with his family, with mechanical problems from unregulated airlines when it crashes and the whole lot of them get third and fourth degree burns but they don’t get picked up for several painful hours by emergency services because the gubmint doesn’t have the funds to have the equipment and personnel to pick them up right away. This would be followed by a long stay in an unregulated.hospital where they all pick up superinfections and lose some limbs. The Norquist family would.then.be kicked out of the hospital because their insurance refuses to pay the bill because they’re out of network even for.an emergency. This would be followed.by the.hospital emptying out Grovers bank accounts of all funds for the.multimillion dollar bill. Grover will also be losing his house to the hospital. Medicaid ofcourse won’t be around because Grover wanted to keep all his precious earnings and not pay a dime of taxes. The cherry on top would be Grovers.inability to sue the airline because the courts are way overburdened because of inadequate funding.
