And Zachary Quinto as Glenn Greenwald RT @ClaraJeffery: Omfg http://t.co/XVJ3yYNZIb pic.twitter.com/3YwU8jakqd

From The Wrap:
… Joseph Gordon-Levitt will star as the NSA contractor who leaked classified documents, while Shailene Woodley will co-star as his longtime girlfriend Lindsay Mills. Rising star Scott Eastwood is also part of the cast.
Tom Ortenberg‘s Open Road Films and James D. Stern’s Endgame Entertainment recently partnered on the U.S. release of the Edward Snowden film, which writer-director Stone based on the books “Time of the Octopus” by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena, and “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” by journalist Luke Harding…
Give Stone credit: These are accomplished actors, and not the sort who’ll sign up for any piece of crap just because they need the money / want the spotlight.
But I fully expect Glenn Greenwald will be insufferable about the whole project… just the same as you or I would be, m’dears.
Amir Khalid
Glenn Greenwald will get to be played by Zachary Quinto. Lucky devil.
Here’s a wonderful new idea from South Korea: eat your dinner and become a TV star!
Geeno
Nonsense! I will be perfectly humble when they make a movie about one of my escapades. I’m just waiting for the call. … over here …waiting.
@Amir Khalid: Didn’t follow the link, but having food now makes you TV worthy in North Korea – good to know.
cokane
why is this movie necessary? there’s a documentary about all of this already
mclaren
If Zachary Quinto gets Obama with a Vulcan nerve pinch, then I am all in.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Amir Khalid: My mom told me to always finish what was on my plate, cause there’s staving children in Korea. I mentioned that to my wife over dinner yesterday.
Amir Khalid
@cokane:
Yeah, but no one watches documentaries. But if you make a feature film, cast some hot movie stars who look better than the actual people could ever hope to, and jazz up the story a bit — or a lot, since after all you’re not in the movie business for your health — the thing could become a hit and make you some serious coin.
Mnemosyne
The Benedict Cumberbatch movie where he played Julian Assange sank without a trace, so I doubt this one is going to do much better at the box office.
mclaren
@Amir Khalid:
Yeah, but you have to make a realistic movie about real events. You know, with Glenn Greenwald using a belt-fed mini-gun to battle radioactive yetis sent by the Pentagon during his escape to the Ecuadorian Embassy in his rocket-propelled Lamborghini along with his supermodel girlfriend who is also a secret ninja assassin able to fend off Joe Biden’s Five Finger Open Palm Death Grip.
Amir Khalid
@Mnemosyne:
I did say “could become a hit”. ;)
Amir Khalid
@mclaren:
Glenn Greenwald, with a girlfriend? Now that’s unrealistic.
mclaren
@Amir Khalid:
Dude…it’s the movies!

For our next brave prediction:
Water will continue to be wet.

@Mnemosyne:
I was just about to say this. The Fifth Estate was actually pretty good (I saw it in the theater), it had hot star Cumberbatch, and it went exactly nowhere. I don’t see how making the story even more Hollywooden improves the prospects. Unless there are car chases.
different-church-lady
I hear it will be heavy on PowerPoint slides.
BillinGlendaleCA
@different-church-lady: I’m sure that will spice things up.
mclaren
@Morzer:
I saw a TV series about this. It was called The Last Ship and it did not end well.
Mike G
@Geeno:
Still more appealing than North Korean TV, with shows like “Let’s Cut Our Hair In Accordance With Socialist Lifestyle”
srv
Wait wait WAIT! Who is playing John Cole?
Frankensteinbeck
They’ve got to be kidding. He’s just regular level wanted, and made a hilarious spectacle of himself running away.
Arclite
@mclaren:
I would pay money to see that.
Arclite
@srv:
Michael Myers. In his Fat Bastard make up.
Morzer
@Arclite:
Undead John Candy
NotMax
For the scene with Snowden discovering a time machine in a secret Chinese lab under the Hong Kong airport and must travel back to assassinate JFK as a condition of being granted entree to Russia?
Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
@srv:
When it all falls apart- and it will- Jason Biggs will play Greenwald, James Van Der Beek will play Snowden…And Kevin Smith (who’ll also be directing) will play Cole. The role of constisnoochie-boochies mistermix will, of course, be played by Jason Mewes.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again)
Gotta shoehorn Lorenzo Lamas in there somewhere.
For a fleeting moment confused one of your choices with Eric von Detten. which might be worse.

Link fix.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
But who will play the noble figure of Andrew Sullivan dying of consumption but still heroically “standing with” the friends of freedom from an armchair several thousand miles away?
NotMax
@Morzer
Bruce Campbell. Or Hugh Grant.
Botsplainer
@Morzer:
I vote Zach Galifinakis in that role.
Morzer
@Botsplainer:
I am nominating Ian McNeice.

John Cole.

@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
Too stoic and self-effacing.

@Morzer:
ACTING!
kindness
I used to like Glenn Greenwald. That was 4 or 5 iterations ago. Now I find him to be insufferable on any topic.
FlipYrWhig
Is Zachary Quinto going to do immersive research for his role by hanging out in comments here haranguing people who fail to acknowledge his great love of the Muslim people?
Enhanced Voting Techniques
Well if Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s the 2 hour black and white morality of movies is the best way to examine complex historical events.

@Arclite:
Not angry enough.
The Ancient Randonneur
Will the movie have 87 updates during the intro to make Greenwald’s participation more believable ?
Marc McKenzie
@mclaren: Screw you.
different-church-lady
@Temporarily Max McGee (soon enough to be Andy K again):
I would pay money to see that.
C.V. Danes
@cokane:
Exactly. And from what I hear it was pretty good, so not sure what this film will accomplish except for muddying the truth with ramped-up dramatic license.
Kathleen
.Who will be cast as Glenn’s Gulag (the one in which he’s languishing for speaking TRUTH)?
different-church-lady
@C.V. Danes:
I know. If I wanted that kind of stuff I’d just read Greenwald.
Another Holocene Human
@mclaren: Bring in Zoe Saldana as the girlfriend and I’m in.
Another Holocene Human
@Morzer: Seth Rogen?
Another Holocene Human
@different-church-lady: Shut down the thread.
