Took Ginger to get groomed today, went away for a couple hours, came back, and found this animal that I didn’t even recognize:
Apparently her coat was so bad after years of neglect that he tried to brush her out after the bath, but her hair kept coming out in clumps, so he just shaved her. I have no idea if this is what she is suposed to look like, but this is what she looks like now.
I took her to a friend who loves poodles, and she almost took Ginger away from me, because she was gushing over how adorable she looked, and I said “I dunno- looks like a rubber chicken to me.” The important thing is that she feels better, and she is much friskier.
Without her hair, she is so damned teeny tiny. I have no idea how she birthed these pups. Here she is next to her five and a half week old puppies:
And here is my best attempt at a family photo:
At any rate, she is completely ignoring her puppies, so I think as soon as she gets her stiches out next week we are going to work on placing her in her forever home. I need to get in touch with Mary G. and see if she can get the home inspection by a pet rescue in her area and if that is still an option. Figure I will keep the pups for a couple more weeks until they are housebroken and because I don’t want to give away the two of them just yet.
Shana
I’m with you John, I don’t know how she did it either. On the plus side, she looks less ridiculous than the standard poodle at the Dog Show last night.
raven
@Shana: Well the pups were a bit smaller when they were born.
dmsilev
@Shana: Show cuts for standard poodles are absurd. The more normal ‘lamb’ cut that most poodles get is a lot more practical and low-maintanence.

Yay for Ginger…she is adorable! Wish I could take her.

Ginger has tragic eyes. It is so wonderful that she found you and will finally be able to experience love and comfort.

Lovey looks like her mom. Just adorable.
khead
She’s adorable.

My two older sons tower over me now. It happens.
SWMBO
Sounds like JC took the shots and is lactating. This is why Ginger could stop nursing and they were still growing. And, no, JC you won’t want to give them up even when they are housebroken and weaned.

Ginger!! Such a sweet face. And Lovey is so adorable. You’re a good man, John Cole.

Also, too, consider getting that poor girl a sweater, unless it’s already warm where you are.

What are the odds that at least one puppy stays at Casa Cole (I’m betting on Lovey)?
debit
Cole, did they ever biopsy that growth?

And this is how it starts.

What a cutie pie. Btw, she doesn’t look like a Ginger.

Don’t forget that one of the pups has a Juicer (geg6, if I’m not mistaken) request as well. Thanks for the pupdate with pictures. Ginger is indeed tiny.

My spaniel looked the same way after I trimmed him pretty close the first time. He had so much hair that trimmed close he looked half his previous size. He was so difficult to groom that I had places tell me not to bring him back and once you got started just shaving him close was the best course of action, for him and me.
Anne Laurie
Oh, the little sweetie! Good thing Ginger’s got other people clamoring to adopt her, because she really wouldn’t fit with our rescue alpha-bitch but I so want to kidnap her…
As for the puppies, Cole, give them a few more weeks and they’ll be getting into everything, destroying stuff you had no idea they could reach, vocalizing inappropriately when you’re trying to sleep, and otherwise making it easier for you to bear the idea of them finding other homes. Some rescue groups neuter male puppies when they’re three months old, and by the time young Thurston is deliberately “marking” all the furniture legs he’s just finished chewing you won’t even regret doing it :)

@Shana: Was I the only one who was hysterically happy that the plain little beagle won best of show? Not that she’s plain, she’s gorgeous, but we had several dust mops in the running… though the Skye terrier was cute.

@Emma: No no no. I was also hysterically happy that Miss P was BIS. I believe she has a line in common with Uno, the first beagle BIS. He’s happily retired with his owner in Texas, I read somewhere on the internet last night.
I waited until the award was announced PST to check, in honor of my late friend from Seattle, who always requested “no spoilers” on the soaping BB we belong to.

I’m really rooting for MaryG to get Ginger.
Pogonip
Thanks for the pupdate, John!
Ginger lost a lot of insulation; if your area’s in the deep freeze I suggest you put a doggie coat on her when you take her out.
You’re a fine man.
Shana
@Emma: No, you’re not. I’ve never owned one but I like beagles too. They just look like dogs, unlike some of those breeds.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
Oh so cute.
Juju
MaryG, you should get Ginger if you can. I say this as person who saw a dog’s picture on a website and I knew she was mine. I have Martha now because the feeling was so strong, and we are both so happy now. I want you and Ginger to have the same joy of life. Yes, there are other dogs who are closer that you could adopt, but you felt a connection to Ginger. There is nothing to stop you from helping the local dogs in addition to adopting Ginger. Get your house and yard inspected and have Ginger brought to you somehow or other. I will contribute to the cause.
Violet
Oh, she’s adorable! I’m sure her fur will grow out. And my goodness, the size of those puppies! How did she do it?
Anne Laurie
@Ruckus: Six months from now, Ginger will be a glorious floofy little bundle again, and as long as she’s treated to a bath & a proper grooming every few months she shouldn’t be any trouble to keep pretty.
Our rescue papillon-mix Gloria had been shaved before she came to us “temporarily”, because she was too filthy & matted from five years of living on the street to groom properly. We still have to put a muzzle on her before we bathe her or trim any mats… but she’s good about letting us muzzle her, because she’s aware that clean & silky feels better than matted & filthy. I’m sure Ginger will not be nearly as alpha-defensive about her grooming requirements, and will probably be delighted to have people fuss over her!
kindness
I’m curious how the other dogs are taking the pups.
Suzanne
Ginger is a cutie.
My Luna hurt her leg today. She won’t put any weight on her right rear leg. She isn’t acting like she’s in pain, and I don’t see visible injury or anything in her foot. She’s letting me touch it without any problems, and she’s curled up in her usual position on it. I’m guessing she ruptured the ACL. Going to call the vet tomorrow. But I’m worried. Poor bebe.
madmommy
Bless her, she’s had a rough road. But her hair will grow back and she’ll look like a poodle should in no time!
satby
I’m rooting for Mary G too, and let us know if we can help with transport costs for Mary G to get Ginger home.

@a hip hop artist from Idaho (fka Bella Q): Beagles are the best! Mine is the cute one on the pillows in the Balloon Juice calendar. It’s like having a permanent toddler, but she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.
Miss P is Uno’s grand niece – interesting fact, Uno turned out to be sterile. We were laughing at Miss P’s “real” name last night “Looking for Trouble”. Perfect.

This. A thousand times this. What an adorable family. Glad you did this and really glad you shared it with us.

Aww, sweet Ginger and pups! Thanks for the photos John.
I hope things can work out for Mary G., and help is available here for logistics financial support.

@Suzanne: I hope all goes well for Luna.
Suzanne
@Karen in GA: I had a cocker spaniel who ruptured her ACL years ago, and we did not do the surgery. And she healed up and was fine, within a few weeks it was like it never happened. But now I’m wondering if she injured her ankle, since she seems to be holding that foot a little bit differently, bent downward more than normal. But still….no pain, and she’s using the stairs.
Violet
I think Lovey’s snout and nose look like Ginger’s in that last picture. So cute.
@Suzanne: I hope Luna is okay.
Suzanne
@Violet: I’m freaking out a bit. My dearie. I love this dog so much.

Malibu (as seen in the last couple of calendars) passed away today at the ripe age of 22. I’ll miss her for the rest of my days but she’s now feeling what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars!

@AndoChronic: My condolences. As silly as it sounds, I still miss my dog who I lost in 1985: he was a part of my family and I will always remember him. They are always with us as long as we remember them.
SWMBO
@AndoChronic: So sorry to hear this. She had a good run and she’s missed. What more could she ask for?
SWMBO
@Suzanne: My daughter’s JRT sprained her knee a few years back. Pain meds, massages and what hydrotherapy she would tolerate (I’m a JRT not a lab, dammit!) helped a lot. Mostly it was rest and no running with the other dogs.
Violet
@AndoChronic: @Suzanne: Well, hopefully the vet will have good news for you tomorrow. Poor thing. It’s always tough with animals because they can’t tell you what’s wrong.
@AndoChronic: Condolences on your loss.
Violet
@Omnes Omnibus: That pesky soul thing. Plenty of lawyers without those.
Omnes Omnibus
@Violet: Well, compared to engineers, we do quite well. Let’s not even mention librarians….
Anne Laurie
@Suzanne: Slipping patellas are the small-dog equivalent of chronic hip displacement in large dogs… but larger dogs can suffer from slipped patellas, too. If that’s Luna’s problem, your vet should be able to ‘pop’ it back into place without surgery. No guarantees, but it’s one more possibility to consider.
One of our rescues came to us, age five, with Grade 3 patella issues. You can tell he knows about his condition, because while he’s good with stairs, he’s always cautious about jumping. Instead of leaping straight up with abandon when he’s happy, like most dogs, he does this weird little butt-dance with his knees tucked firmly under his center of gravity. But he’s thirteen now, and while he sometimes limps for a day or so, he hasn’t had problems sufficient to require outside intervention.
Hoping Luna’s issues, whatever they are, turn out to be similarly minor.
Anne Laurie
@AndoChronic: My condolences. Lucky you, to have her company for so many years!

@Omnes Omnibus: I shudder to think what might happen should a library patron need assistance.

Thanks guys, don’t mind the tears… I’m still trying to get over the fact that she has been with me for just over half of my life. I’m very fortunate to have accompanied her for so long. I’ll always love her. My heart goes out to everyone and their beloved fuzzy friends as well.

@Violet: Obviously, they will get help or be stabbed. I suppose it depends on the library – FWIW, Fort Worth, Indiana, has a wonderful reference librarian. If you live near there, you should treasure him.

@AndoChronic: Cheers to you as well. You’ll miss her, but, over time, you will remember just the good times.

@Suzanne: could be an acl, our sheltie Piper blew hers out (a partial tear) and we’ve been treating it with Ligaplex and an anti-inflammatory and she’s doing well for the most part. Didn’t want to go thru the panic of trying to anesthetize a 9 year old sheltie and despite the odd day or two of sleeping wrong, she’s doing quite well. Some of the vets even offer rehab therapy (if you have the money and seek faster results).

@Anne Laurie:
Bud was a pain to groom but he didn’t mind a bath. There was a self service bathing area at one of the local chain pet stores where we lived and he’d let me wash and even scrub him. But try to trim him in the same places and without a muzzle you were assuredly going to get bit. Could have been the sound of the trimmer, could have just been him, who knows?
