This morning I see that one of the compost bins (mostly empty) had been picked up by the wind, blown all the way across the yard and taken out one of the tomato seedling cloches along the way. Pretty impressive. The thump must have been when it hit the fence or even the house.

I really hope that Hillary Clinton, by some mercy bestowed upon us by an act of Fate or whatever, decides not to run for president. I know, I know, you’ve been ready since 2008, just seizing with excitement to continue the Clinton dynasty. Don’t get me wrong, she has name recognition and experience, and it’s long time that a woman commanded the Oval Office. We must ask ourselves, however, should it be this woman?
Clinton has a long track record in politics and business. Her earliest political escapades were in support of Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater, and as president of her chapter of College Republicans. Apparently moved by the Civil Rights movement, she decided to leave the Republican Party, according to PBS. She worked as attorney at Rose Law Firm, which represented large corporate clients such as Wal*Mart and currently represents large firms such as U.S. Bank and Bank of America. Hillary was, in fact, the first female member of Wal*Mart’s board of directors.
As a United States Senator, Clinton voted to authorize the war with Iraq as part of the “War on Terror.” She voted for the U.S.A. PATRIOT ACT. Clinton is tough on crime and favors the “death penalty, welfare restrictions, and a balanced budget.” As Secretary of State, Clinton was even more of a hawk than Obama.
She’s also really wealthy and is totally fine with giving speeches to Wall Street Banks for $200,000:
I just don’t buy the idea that Hillary Clinton would be good for America’s working poor, middle class, or communities of color. That’s why I’m rooting for Elizabeth Warren to change her mind, or for Bernie to announce his bid as a Democrat.

Has anyone heard of a group called 21st Century Progressives before? They called me tonight asking me for money, telling me that Democrats lost because they weren’t liberal enough. After telling him no, I couldn’t donate because it requires work pre-clearance, I then proceeded to ask how having Kay Hagan or Mary Landrieu running as flaming liberals would have won their Senate races. I then told him that de Blasio is an amateur at NY politics and that he should shut his trap and focus on running the city instead of becoming the self-styled progressive champion of the universe.
The guy was like “Wow…you know a lot about this stuff.” Clearly I knew more than this clueless fool who was reading a fucking script and probably didn’t have a damn clue who Thom Tillis was when I mentioned his name.
Clueless, uninformed people with good intentions…
ETA: I also asked what Elizabeth Warren is besides a populist and questioned what on earth her foreign policy is. I don’t think anyone knows the answer to this, and it’s probably unholy of me to dare question the hero of the netroots…but foreign policy is a big part of being president, and I have zero trust that Warren would have good instincts…mainly because I don’t think she has any strong views or convictions on foreign policy.
Warren would make a fine nominee, although she’s made it clear she’s not running. I just didn’t know where you stood, and since you are usually snarky, I thought I’d ask.
@BruceFromOhio: was Lyndon Johnson more effective as a Senator or as a President?

In Sonoma and Napa counties, our recent unseasonably warm stretches of weather this time of year has grape growers especially on their toes. An early bud and snap freeze killed my uncle’s few acres of grapes in Napa one spring 25 years ago, and killed a lot of other vineyards and cash crops up and down the state, too. The life of a small farmer is such a crap shoot.
They’re probably the baby cut carrots, which I do like. I don’t have too many problems with either mushiness or drying out before the expiration date. Plus full-sized carrots sometimes give me a tummy ache, for some reason. The baby cuts are more digestible.
@WaterGirl:
You just have to check to see if the things are labeled “baby carrots” or “baby cut carrots”. Baby carrots should be actual small carrots, while the baby cut ones are ones that have been trimmed to size and shape. If they still have their skin on, they’re actual baby carrots.
69.

She’s doing better. Still some nipping fits but mostly when she either needs a nap or a walk. We are doing an impulse control game with her now that seems to be helping.
We did have a bit of a messy day today since somehow she stole some cajun fries off my son’s plate. She likes the hots but they don’t like her.
We’ve had a few playdates with a pup who is the same age and size. They were bounding in deep snow like dolphins. Very cute.
Well, my Maggie dog update isn’t good. She has a failing liver, some sort of copper uptake disease fairly rare but genetically occurring in Lab breeds among others.{I’ve probably garbled that up a bit}. It’s ultimately terminal, though she’s comfortable on medication right now. But combined with her age and the depression she’s been in since Biggie died she’s not really rebounding much.
And one of my rescues that my son in Chicago claimed as his own crossed the bridge yesterday, but she was 15 and more ready to go than my son was to let her. I’m proud that he did what was best for her in spite of how sad it made him.
Maybe I seen my opportunity for a good wise-ass comment an’ I took it.
This girl can’t argue with that!
That’s not his real name. He posted David Koch-like comments at first, in a snarky sort of way, then he just turned into a regular guy but with that nym. That’s how it seemed to me, anyway. That’s why I can’t figure out why Anne Laurie hates on him sometimes as a troll.

Hold a treat or two or kibble in closed right hand under pup’s nose. Wait until pup backs face away from kibble in closed hand and open your hand. Every time pup moves to take the treat, close your hand until the pup learns to wait with treats exposed on open hand. Then give her/him a treat one at a time with your left hand while praising.
The goal is to get the puppy to manage herself and learn control. It seems to be helping.
The problem for me is that I am less interested in her past than her current positions and vision. THAT is where I have my questions. What was listed in this snippet was a judgment by her history — being a Goldwater Republican. Why do I care about that? I care about who is alive now and can do something about our many challenges — and who has the intestinal fortitude and drive to take this thing on. I could give a shit even about her past votes on Iraq if she projects a policy vision that makes sense NOW.
Lets get off of our high horses here. Liz Warren is a nice academic but she has not been through any kind of fire and you know that. She is untried and others was well are untested.
I donot demand perfection from our generals in this battle… both Sherman and Grant were drunk and depressed for significant parts of their lives, but they did what needed to be done, praise be.

It is 3.6 degrees right now here, with 8-10 inches of snow, and high water from heavy rain yesterday that melted the 13 inch snow cover we were working with last week.
I have a PT appointment in the am Friday, but won’t be able to get there I don’t expect. I have the scraper blade on the tractor, but being 2 weeks post-surgery I don’t have any business doing that yet.
Being trapped by snow is OK when you’re ready for it and just as happy to be hermiting. We have a friend who is an RN staying with us since I’m laid up and Ms J is disabled to some degree and can’t help me much. Isn’t that nice? She doesn’t really have any medical duties as the wound is glued shut, but she helps me cook by doing the hands-on.
We’re having a good time snowed in. Hoping no one is actually getting flooded, sounds like mostly high water across roadways so far.

@WaterGirl: He disagrees with her. Without shame. And some of her fave commenters. Ergo, troll.
@WaterGirl: To answer directly: I only ever see “David Koch” in the comments ragging on Democrats, highlighting whatever “Dems in disarray” meme the Repubs are pushing, and/or posting the kind of “Let’s you & her (Warren & HRC) fight!!!” crap he’s been shitting on this thread.
These are classic ratfvcking techniques, as pioneered & perfected by many generations of Republican operatives. “David Koch” has sworn it’s not paid to do this, and insisted that it’s not a Republican, so I am left to assume it’s just got a personality disorder similar to that of Iago.
Is it a troll, or does it just play one on Balloon Juice? In either case, when the “David Koch” persona forgets itself IRL and gets punched out… or just finds another political blog to shit up… I for one will not miss it.

@raven: I believe that the pups understand that we are trying to help them, and that gives them much forebearance as we tend to them.
My late Golden Seamus was very patient when I irrigated his unit with saline solution and then applied polysporin under his foreskin when he had yeast infections there. When he had hot spots that were healing and the itching was driving him crazy, he’d lie down beside me to show that he was complying with the “No licking” policy.
The ultimate test of this mutual trust was when he got hot spots both over and under his tail when I had not dried him off after a swim. The night before, he came into the house very restless and unable to settle and doing that “I’m being a good boy” thing when it was clear that he just wanted to climb out of his skin. I checked his unit a few times, thinking that was the cause, but nothing there.
I came home the next day to find him lying outside with flies buzzing all over his hind-quarters, which looked damp. Upon closer inspection, I discovered a happy little tribe of maggots working on various tail area hotspots.
After getting over my initial horror and revulsion, I got busy with the electric trimmer and shaved the hair off those areas and picked maggots off with a tweezers while he laid on garbage bags to catch what we were getting rid of. This finally in the dark, while I would wave my arm every few minutes to turn the motion-sensitive outdoor lights back on so that I could see what I was doing.
The ultimate was sticking my finger inside his rosy sphincter in order to determine whether the maggots there we coming or going (they were coming, thank Dog). And he laid there patiently for the whole ordeal, because he knew I was helping him. As were the maggots, apparently, because they were feeding on the bacteria that fed the hotspots, although their presence made Seamus feel very “aaaaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhh”.
By the end of the session, I was no longer disgusted by maggots, but rather oddly fascinated. And if you’ve read all of this, you’ve pretty much forgotten Betty’s Spam and lima beans. You can thank me later.

@David Koch:
Warren would make a fine nominee, although she’s made it clear she’s not running. I just didn’t know where you stood, and since you are usually snarky, I thought I’d ask.
David Koch
@BruceFromOhio: was Lyndon Johnson more effective as a Senator or as a President?
Just think what Warren could accomplish (like LBJ) with the Bully Pulpit at her finger tips.

Pickled carrots are actually delightful…
WaterGirl
@PsiFighter37: I think they called me within the past week. Did they mention Elizabeth Warren and Al Franken by name? I told them I was donating directly to Elizabeth Warren, Al Franken and Sherrod Brown this month and that would have to be enough from me.
WaterGirl
@David Koch: What’s with Anne Laurie thinking you’re a troll?

@efgoldman: Gosh that sounds like fun. Are they including an ice fishing experience and/or snowmobile lessons?

In Sonoma and Napa counties, our recent unseasonably warm stretches of weather this time of year has grape growers especially on their toes. An early bud and snap freeze killed my uncle’s few acres of grapes in Napa one spring 25 years ago, and killed a lot of other vineyards and cash crops up and down the state, too. The life of a small farmer is such a crap shoot.

@Roger Moore:
They’re probably the baby cut carrots, which I do like. I don’t have too many problems with either mushiness or drying out before the expiration date. Plus full-sized carrots sometimes give me a tummy ache, for some reason. The baby cuts are more digestible.
David Koch
@WaterGirl: who cares what a sad plagiarist copies.
BruceFromOhio
@David Koch: Woulda, coulda, shoulda.
Don’t misinterpret, Warren may make a fine executive, and it’s fine to dream big. It’s just not happening today. She said so.
… I do love imagining her alongside Sherrod Brown and Al Franken in the shithole of Myrtle’s senate estate, making that turtle’s life a living hell.
PsiFighter37
@efgoldman: Yep in finance, but I am required to do it. I actually think it’s part of Dodd-Frank, IIRC
Roger Moore
@WaterGirl:
You just have to check to see if the things are labeled “baby carrots” or “baby cut carrots”. Baby carrots should be actual small carrots, while the baby cut ones are ones that have been trimmed to size and shape. If they still have their skin on, they’re actual baby carrots.
WaterGirl
@efgoldman: Is that a cute way of saying you think he is a troll, or are you just being cute?
Corner Stone
@efgoldman:
“Yarrggh! Answer me three questions and I be lettin’ ya pass!”

Very cute.

Been there, done that. Sorry to hear it.
I really don’t know that I could handle all the energy of the puppy if I didn’t have Tucker to wear him out, and vice versa.
Impulse control game?

Betty, it was such a great day when you joined Balloon Juice as a front-pager. I don’t say that often enough…
Loved loved loved your clinton graphic in the previous thread, you captured it all perfectly.

Been a hard year.
WaterGirl
@efgoldman:
BillinGlendaleCA
@efgoldman: Damn, I was thinkin’ of changing my nym to GW Bush.

@Corner Stone: And from Weird Al,
Hopefully this does not apply to @efgoldman‘s daughter (daughter-in-law?).

@efgoldman: Interesting. Mine didn’t, so I was able to donate freely until the end of 2012, I think. Probably a good thing, given how much dough I tossed to Obama in 2012.

@efgoldman: alot of people on twitter use parody accounts. For example, there was a very funny parody account of Rahm Emmanuel.
As for me, I started a fake twitter account parodying Koch and they got so mad at me I was banned from twitter. No sense of humor those people. Instead of keep fighting and endless battle with twitter and the Kochs I decided to keep using the parody on various site. For instance, click on my name.

We are in good shape for now. We have several people who have opened up enclosed porches and basements to house kitties on cold nights. We had to suspend the trapping for a bit until the weather warms up.
Thank you though!!
I wonder if the NY group could use one. I think John knows how to reach them

BC: I’ve never seen purple carrots. Wow. Do they taste like orange carrots?
Nice picture, btw.

Oh Satby I’m so sorry.

Yes although I don’t think they are quite as sweet. They are incredibly beautiful sliced with the outer layers purple transitioning to red and orange.

@David Koch:
What I want to see from Hillary is I WANT THIS AND I KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO. That is what I want to see and hear

JR in WV

Anne Laurie
@Corner Stone: Oh, behave.
