Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I was promised a recession.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Democrats have delivered the Square Deal, the New Deal, the Fair Deal, and now… the Big Joe Biden Deal.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The revolution will be supervised.

The lights are all blinking red.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The willow is too close to the house.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Our friend’s son Noah was over for a while this afternoon, and he made some new friends:

hams

I love how they are all hamming it up for the camera. XBOX is serious business, too:

gamingisseriousbizness

And no, those pictures were not posed. They just saw the kid and climbed up to be part of the fun. I love how these puppies are just drawn to people and good with kids and adults alike.

Noah was also super fond of Steve and gasped audibly when he met him the first time, but we didn’t get any pictures.

You’re doing a great job of socializing these little guys. They’re going to make great family pets for some lucky families. (I’d be tempted myself if I didn’t already have 2 dogs & 2 cats!)

Are Lovey’s ears gonna stand up?

I’d guess probably not, although it won’t be a sure thing for a few more months.

As you may know, floppy ears are a side effect of canine neonatalization… doggy ears stand up if the ‘leather’ is thick enough or the ears themselves are small enough. Which is only important, these days, for conformation show dogs, where achieving the proper ear carriage is as important as well-groomed eyebrows on a human beauty-show contestant. Terrier-style ears like Lovey’s do ‘come up’ or ‘drop’ somewhat unpredictably, but I suspect she may always have a ‘flyaway’ left ear — which will just make her more adorable.

What happened by the White House?

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. Secret Service says authorities have responded to a fire and are searching a vehicle near the White House.
Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary says a vendor cart caught fire around 10 a.m. Saturday at 15th and G streets. He says firefighters responded and contained the blaze.
Around the same time, Leary says a bomb-sniffing dog detected something on a vehicle at 16th Street and Constitution Avenue. That vehicle is being checked out by the Secret Service and other law enforcement officials.

@Germy Shoemangler: That was on local DC news around noon or so. I haven’t checked for updates though. There are typically a slew of those vendor trucks along the curbs outside the White House security restriction zone – at least in good weather (cool but sunny today). It isn’t surprising, based on statistics alone, that sooner-or-later there would be a ginormous backfire or some other unplanned loud event. I’m a bit curious about the explosives-sniffing dog though…

ETA: Apparently a vendor cart caught fire around 10am ET.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Secret Service says authorities have responded to a fire and are searching a vehicle near the White House.

Around the same time, Leary says a bomb-sniffing dog detected something on a vehicle at 16th Street and Constitution Avenue. That vehicle is being checked out by the Secret Service and other law enforcement officials.

Imgur carries less baggage and I can recommend it. They are both free, just sign up with your email addy, choose a password, and have at it. Follow the directions to upload a photo and once it is on their servers it will have its own URL that you can publish in a comment here and anyone can click on it.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Tens of thousands of Israelis are gathering at a Tel Aviv square under the banner “Israel wants change” and calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be replaced in March 17 national elections.

Saturday night’s rally at Rabin Square is the highest profile demonstration yet in the run-up to the election. It is organized by a non-profit organization seeking to change Israel’s priorities and refocus on health, education, housing and the country’s cost of living.

She was played in the movie Selma by Lorraine Tousaint and the scene on the bridge made sure to zoom in on Ms Boynton during that march.

Here is an iconic pic of her on the bridge….Amelia Boynton

    http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-0308-krotoszynski-selma-march-protest-doctrine-20150308-story.html

A series of rulings erected what is known as the public forum doctrine, which lets a city, state or the federal government decide whether public property can be used for 1st Amendment activities. It also means that if courts do not designate a place a “traditional public forum,” government may forbid its use as a site of protest altogether.

As I said in another comment I never would have done what he did. 99% sure I’d wimp out. I would have been scared. Ran away. But people like John Lewis are better than myself and they stood up. Willing to be beat down to stand up.
