Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

Let me file that under fuck it.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

In after Baud. Damn.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

A consequence of cucumbers

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

How Could We Forget About White Genocide?!?!

by Elon James White|  March 24, 20151:33 pm| 128 Comments

This post is in: This Week In Blackness

FacebookTweetEmail

We want to apologize here at This Week in Blackness. It is our goal to cover stories that focus on the oppressed and those without a voice. We have covered civil rights, immigration, LGBTQ and so much more, but we have overlooked one of the most oppressed groups in our world. That is why we bring to you this video on stopping White Genocide.

Because in the end, let’s not forget that white people have it the toughest. Thank god they have a catchy theme song to make it easier to understand.

Team Blackness also discussed George Zimmerman blaming Obama, Ted Cruz’s announcement, and seriously…white genocide.

That video is so absurd, it is difficult to tell what it is. Has EJW been hoaxed? I’ll listen to the radio broadscast later when I have time, and see if more info on the provenance of this thing.

I’ll be a little contrarian wrt to rise of white person bigotry. While it is true that in terms of levels of misery, whites on average in the US have it much better than other race/ethnicities. On the other hand, in terms of changes from recent baselines, the recent ‘post modern’ recessions have touched working and middle class whites more than they have in the past. At least that is what I see in employment, wage and benefit data.

So, in terms of perceived ‘change in pain’, I can understand why certain whites are fearful and pissed. If you add to that the mistaken notion that any change in pain is due to Those Other People getting all the goodies because of government policies, the reaction of some whites becomes more understandable. When you add the tribalism induced by race and ethnic bigotry, attitudes get very fixed and crazy fantasies start to brew. This is one reason I think the very poor macroeconomic policy that we have seen under both Bush and Obama has been extremely damaging.

I am tempted to say that whites should know better, but the fact is, many don’t. It is a brute fact that we have to deal with.

This kind of fantasy is one reason making things worse overall in order to ‘heighten the contradictions’ is a dangerous strategy that usually backfires. Just as likely to start those who are hurt and are lower on the socioeconomic and power ladder to start hating and fighting with each other as accomplishing anything else.

And being pedantic (not that the audience for this video would care) but based on UN Article 2’s definition, there is no actual genocide by these women’s reference to authority. Majority/minority nations were expected and OK, and not genocide.

@schrodinger’s cat: I almost mentioned Clinton’s financial deregulation and Rubin high dollar policy. But I think slightly different things. Clinton combined those with very good domestic macroeconomic policy.

And hard too separate the effect of Clinton’s dangerous financial regulation policies from truly disastrous turn they took under Bush II.

I think good domestic macroeconomic policy can make up, at least for a while, for other bad economic policies. But with poor domestic macroeconomic policy, there will be potentially dangerous social and political consequences and not much can be done about it. People will get very upset, and start to think crazy things.

With (Edit: many) Democrats, I think it is simply mistaken policy. With GOP, hard to tell how much is mistake and how much is cynical. We know more now about which macroeconomic theories work and which don’t, at immense expense, than we did fifteen years ago. People like Clinton and Obama indicate that they can reconsider things. I see no sign of that from the current version of the GOP.

Those insecure, cough racist, white people need to get over it because the odds are that at least some of the women in that video will someday probably be grandmothers or great grandmothers to grandbabies who don’t have the same skin color they do. March 24, 2015 at 3:12 pm

@JCJ: I agree it is not new. I think it does get amplified whenever perceived pain (which may involve change in status form a baseline as well as absolute level) rises among formerly insulated and privileged groups. I think that describes the 70s, and mid 80s were when the Reagan GOP cut backs in social spending started to bite. 1983 and 1984 when, for example, life expectancy in US suddenly started to flat line compared to other high income countries, especially among women, including white women (in those groups life expectancies suddenly flat lined absolutely) in US. Must of been some sudden real changes in social policy or economic welfare behind that: for example, access to care.

I am a white, hetero male. I am not in any danger. I was born to a senior in college & a grad student. Mom was middle class & Dad was first in a blue collar family to go to college, but they were dirt poor when I was born. However, by virtue of being white & male, I had more than 90% of the world without even trying.

There is no race genocide. 1) There are more than enough people on the planet. 2) Plenty of those people are white. 3) White people are not going extinct.

And if we are, what’s the big deal? The family lines of most people will continue. So it’s merged with other families? Big deal. All these fears about stupid stuff.

If anything, humanity may go extinct with the climate change. That’s more of a concern than some arbitrary demarcation of who is what.

So…they decided to replace the rather dramatic “demographic winter” term with the completely hysterical “white genocide”?

I’ve heard people in the Jewish community worry that, in a century, the only people who actively identify as Jewish will be hardcore Zionist Orthodox types because everyone else will have largely assimilated into the mainstream of society. I fear the same thing will happen to “white”, insomuch as it can happen to a majority rather than a minority.

The cue-card writers never heard of gentrification, the Armenian Genocide, the slave trade from Africa, Japanese racism, the Native American holocaust, or a few other little inconvenient truths, but they sure don’t want the black peen getting into those blonde-haired honeyholes!

Ah well, the Free Market Jebus will undoubtedly decide if we should establish little habitats and corridors where this endangered White Owl / Albino Panda culture can be carefully protected and nurtured in isolation from all other alternatives. OK totally off topic but this is toooo funny. CNN’s Dana Bash is reporting that Calgary Cruz is planning on signing up for Obamacare. He is no longer able to piggy back on his wife’s plan because she has gone on unpaid leave for the duration of the campaign. SOOOO he will have to signup using the federal exchange (assuming that SCOTUS doesn’t destroy it).

@SatanicPanic: Oh, definitely, but I think overall diversity within neighborhoods is better if it grows more organically. I can actually see some value in ethnically homogenous neighborhoods. They allow people, especially new immigrants a place where they can maintain their culture and are broadly accepted by their neighbors. ETA: I think people will move where they need to be and can be at their own pace. Blending of cultures has raised cross-cultural acceptance and over time I expect that will accelerate naturally.

Where the problem comes in is when some form of force is involved. If the realtor won’t sell to that black family, for example, or if people can’t leave their poor neighborhood because of systematic pay discrimination or if we were to institute a neighborhood by neighborhood quota system (something these women in the video seem to fear, but I have never seen proposed).

Or are we race traitors, suborned by Jews and blacks?

Man, you could have several seminars on weighty topics like that at the next white genocide conference.

Edit: actually, I thought one of the accents was more Aussie. But then I am so slow on the uptake I thought it was all a spoof, so was just enjoying what I thought was a joke rather than trying to really figure it out. I think we need to address these issues in tandem since they both feed into each other, but diversifying neighborhoods as an end unto itself won’t get us there.

Not just killing people of a certain race or ethnicity, but also taking other actions that will bring about the end of it. That definition is a fine definition, however when you hold that up against what these folk have to say one can only be left to conclude that these racist fvckwits have a major problem with integration, miscegenation, and the well known fact fear that we are deliberately importing millions of darkies to breed away the white race.

Of course he doesn’t mention all of the employers who didn’t offer medical coverage before Obamacasre. Of course he doesn’t HAVE to signup for a group plan from his employer. He can go out on the exchange and get his own coverage. But will probably be more expensive. And assuming that there are no pre-exisiting conditions that is.

@Kropadope: I think integrating neighborhoods could reduce some of the “demand” for discriminatory policies, but you’re right, we won’t have anything approaching full integration until everyone is able to get home loans and jobs at the same rate. But I also think that a good deal of the gentrification fight is one the wrong turf- people should be fighting to get into wealthy white neighborhoods, not to keep white people out of poorer neighborhoods. It’s not really possible anyway.

    March 24, 2015 at 4:55 pm

    @Litlebritdifrnt:

Sargent’s right. It’s not hypocritical for Cruz to sign up. Not at all.

In general, people are way too quick to call out hypocrisy. They’re almost always wrong, and they’re usually not making an interesting point even when they’re right.

Obvious examples spring to mind–a more progressive income tax, the mortgage interest deduction, and so on–but to factor politics out of it I’ll use a sports metaphor.

Suppose I’m a football coach, and I think that the rules for pass interference ought to be tightened up. Suppose I think that we’d get a more watchable game if we make passing a little easier. Suppose this is a sincerely held position, entirely reasonable and honestly come by.

Am I now morally obligated to instruct my corners to play by the tighter rules that I propose? If my guys obstruct a receiver in a way that doesn’t draw a flag now but would under my proposed rules, should I rush onto the field to demand a penalty?

It’s stupid. Of course not. And anyone suggesting that I should is obviously just hostile to the change that I’m proposing, and is drumming up an idiot accusation of hypocrisy to muddy the waters.

I love watching Cruz squirm. It’s just good clean fun. But let’s all be clear: This is stupid.

  97. 97.

    D58826

    March 24, 2015 at 5:04 pm

@Laertes: I’m not sure if he is being hypocritical within the terms of your analogy. However if he has his way millions of Americans with far less income will lose their health insurance. He probably is in the financial position that he can afford health coverage on his own with or without Obamacare (assuming no pre-exisiting conditions) And when his campaign self-destructs and his wife goes back to work he is back on her plan. Millions of Americans do not have that luxury, So whither he is a hypocrite or not he is still a scummy human being.

No news since yesterday when one of the city inspectors said her boss said “they can’t pour cement there” and that’s what the contractor was told yesterday. But there’s another group at the city that is responsible for a different set of codes, and they seem to conflict.

And the grand poobah of these sorts of decisions was out sick yesterday, so I don’t think that was the final word.

I haven’t heard anything yet today, so maybe no news is good news, or maybe the grand poobah of decisions is still sick, or maybe the person at the city who promised they would call if anything changes might have dropped the ball. Or the contractor might be petitioning the decision.

For now, the project has stopped, but most likely that’s because it rained yesterday and it’s likely to rain tomorrow. I did see the neighbor and the contractor standing in the area in question for a few minutes today, but I have no way of knowing what that indicates.

“Anti-racist is anti-white” is a KKK meme. Harrison, AR has been trying to live down its Klan connections for decades. There is still a small contingent of Klan members there. A sign on a paid billboard appeared a year ago that said, “Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white”

I think that’s a good thing, as it means that they are hiring the best qualified person for performing a given task, regardless of what country they are from.

Is it strange of me to want the best anestheologist in 200 miles to work with my surgeon, even though his name is Murty? He is clearly from India in some way, but his accent is as local as mine is, and I’m from 90 miles away originally.

He had the bed-side manner of a construction worker, which was fine, as he wasn’t going to work beside my hospical bed, he was going to work from a bank of exotic machinery to run my body while I wasn’t in charge of it. Which is a scary thought in a way, but he has managed people much sicker, weaker and more ill than I am.

These people must be crazy, but someone said that already. I’m willing to buy a car from someone who doesn’t know anything, but I’m not willing to engage with a dumbass for anything more important than making a purchase I can unmake easily.

I really don’t often advocate for beating people to death, but for these feculent creatures, I’m willing to make an exception…

So white people who date other white people are called racist? Nobody ever called me a racist; nobody ever called my wife a racist. I know these poor, delicate wilting flowers are all bleary and teary that people are calling them racists, but–and I’m only speaking for myself here–people don’t call me a racist all that often. Like, almost never. Maybe even not at all never. All this leads me to think that if people are calling you a racist all the time, maybe you’re doing something wrong. It’s like these assholes who are up in arms about the epidemic [sic] of fake rape accusations. They go on and on about how all these guys are always getting accused of rapes they never committed. And all I can think of to say is that nobody has ever accused me of raping anybody. Never. Not even once. And it isn’t like I’ve been going to herculean lengths to not be accused of rape. Pretty much all I’ve had to do is not rape anybody. So if people are calling you a racist all the time, just as if they’re calling you a rapist all the time, maybe you’re doing something wrong. How hard can this really be?

On a random note, I wonder if there’s some cosmic meaning behind the fact that rapist and racist differ by only one letter…
