Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In after Baud. Damn.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

This blog will pay for itself.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

In my day, never was longer.

No one could have predicted…

People are weird.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

We still have time to mess this up!

This post is in: Clown Shoes, Democratic Stupidity

FacebookTweetEmail

Speaking of stupidity, these guys are either a ratfucking operation intent on making HRC look bad, or just dumb as a sack of hammers:

A group called HRC Super Volunteers just warned me "We will be watching, reading, listening and protesting coded sexism…" (1/2)

— Amy Chozick (@amychozick) March 25, 2015

2/2 Sexist words, they say, include "polarizing, calculating, disingenuous, insincere, ambitious, inevitable, entitled, over confident…"

— Amy Chozick (@amychozick) March 25, 2015

Also sexist, according to HRC Super Volunteers: "Secretive" and "will do anything to win, represents the past, out of touch…"

— Amy Chozick (@amychozick) March 25, 2015

"You are on notice that we will be watching, reading, listening and protesting coded sexism…" the email reads.

— Amy Chozick (@amychozick) March 25, 2015

Thin-skinned, asinine, self-defeating, and eminently mockable aren’t on the list, so I’ll point out that this approach is all of them. We have a notoriously cowardly media when it comes to most things, but you pitch them a softball like this, they are going to go to town. Please tell me that no one on the official but not announced campaign team is associated with these idiots. Please.

Like I said, the media is a bunch of cowrds, but they will react when you try to tell them what they can and can not say and start issuing threats. Not to mention, I’m not sure how most of those words are sexist in and of themselves, and some of them aren’t sexist in any context. “Inevitable?” “will do anything to win?”

So basically any criticism of Hillary is sexist then. That’s what her supporters have been saying since 2007.

Her supporters/surrogates do her no favors. Jennifer Graholm threatened O’Malley yesterday for saying that the presidency isn’t something to be passed between two families but has to be earned.

This is that newfangled internet social media stuff that is way over my head.

Assuming that HRC is not behind this nonsense, how she handles it will be far more important that anything else.

As far as our worthless corporate media is concerned, the reverse double dog back flip sexist card carding is ‘out there’.
Chris Matthews will never forget, and may start doing manual on air checks to make sure his balls have not fallen off.

I would almost suspect James O’Keefe of being behind a ratfucking operation like this, with a name “HRC Super Volunteers” suspiciously like one he and his band would cook up, except that ham-fisted as this alleged group seems to be by any ordinary standards, it nevertheless seems a bit too subtle to fit his usual M.O. – but I may yet be convinced if involvement by teenage prostitutes or Black Panthers becomes thrown into the mix before this is over.

Karl Rove would be my other prime suspect for the ringleader behind the scenes; it actually fits his M.O. better than O’Keefe’s.

On foreign policy Webb or Biden would be formidable. Webb gave probably the only response to the State of the Union address that is still remembered and not as a joke. Biden was … chair or ranking member (or whatever the Senate calls them) of Foreign Relations Committee? After the last 10-15 years, not sure there are any real “liberal hawks” left; even among those who like that view. I assume (as of now) HRC will be the candidate (but I thought that in 2007 and had switched over to BHO by late summer). She will certainly benefit by having vigorous opponent(s). ‘Cause in the real election, it will be against a somewhat deranged “base”.

There are going to be double standards applied to Clinton because she’s a woman (as in 2008), and some of them will be things that don’t sound sexist on their face until you consider the pattern of differing thresholds of tolerability.

It’s the classic double bind of stereotype threat: if you do something that reinforces a stereotype, you’re feeding into it, and if you play against the stereotype, you get accused of being inauthentic or freakish. She’s going to have to walk a tightrope between “weak, hysterical woman” and “ballbusting virago”, just as Barack Obama had to risk being characterized as a passionless Vulcan to avoid Scary Black Man.

    @David Koch:

Oh bullshit. 99.9% of Daily Kos are Hillary supporters mocking any other primary opponent and all of the frontpagers are all in for Hillary. You can see at least 1 frontpager trolling any diary that talks about another candidate positively.

That 600+ comment diary was mostly people bitching that O’Malley was being mean/sexist to Hillary.

    @Matt McIrvin:

The difference between Hillary and Obama is that anytime Team Hillary didn’t like any media criticism they launched an attack saying the media was being sexist. In many cases, it simply wasn’t true. Obama on the other hand has gone out of his way since 2007 to avoid calling media attacks racist against him. Hillary came across as weak and whiny for constantly falling back on the sexist BS when attacked. Her team needs a better response than that to criticism/attacks.

This cycle I’m going to be anyone but Hillary in the primary season, but will probably vote and work for her in the general election.

I can’t imagine any R candidate that would be acceptable, thinking about the Supreme Court, international affairs they would screw up, a lack of faith in the scientific method, etc.

    @askew:

Do you really think Biden runs? I am not sure his ego could handle getting his ass kicked again by Hillary.

This could be interesting. Yeah, Biden might be squashed by Hillary, but Hillary could be blindsided by another outsider who wants the presidency more than she does.

Hillary came across as weak and whiny for constantly falling back on the sexist BS when attacked. Her team needs a better response than that to criticism/attacks.

Yep. Yep. Yep. I will be looking for signs that Team Hillary has become more politically astute. It may be a vain search.

I pretty much expect sexist attacks against Hillary, just as I expected (and saw) racist attacks against Obama.

Politics is nasty, brutal business, and to pretend that anything is really beyond the pale is naive, or special pleading. And double and triple standards will be applied to Clinton, along with the claim that she is whining because she can’t take the heat. Because she’s a woman.

Unfortunately these kinds of threats and prohibitions are exactly what you encounter from extremist lunatic-fringe radical feminism of the Andrea Dworkin variety. According to these kinds of extremists, all history is rape, all men are rapists, ordinary behavior that would cause no comment if done by a woman constitutes “rape culture” if done by a man, and so on.

This kind of craziness is standard operating procedure for a certain beyond-crazy fringe of feminists. Most feminists don’t buy into this kind of nutty stuff, but sadly a tiny minority does, and they’ve done an incredible job of discrediting feminism as a whole with their goofy behavior and bizarre rhetoric.

Hillary needs to get some serious mainstream feminists on her side, because there is real sexism embedded in media coverage of politics. For example: op-eds wondering if Hillary is “tough enough,” code phrase for “does she have a penis?”

But this kind of “coded sexist” claim is just wacky.

Jury’s still out as to whether this is ratfucking operation. It sounds so over-the-top that it seems suspiciously like a Rove scheme. Then again, HRC is spectacularly politically clueless — as, for example, when she gave her famous little speech to Goldman Sachs for a cool $400,000:

former Secretary of State and likely 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had some harsh words related to progressives in her $400,000 speeches for Goldman Sachs and friends. Clinton decided to use her speaking opportunity before the super rich to attack those criticizing Wall Street and its numerous criminal practices.

…Clinton offered a message that the collected plutocrats found reassuring, according to accounts offered by several attendees, declaring that the banker-bashing so popular within both political parties was unproductive and indeed foolish.

Foolish, as in you don’t get paid $400,000 for saying it? Why criticize Goldman Sachs when you can get paid $400,000 for talking to them the way they like?

Striking a soothing note on the global financial crisis, she told the audience, in effect: We all got into this mess together, and we’re all going to have to work together to get out of it. What the bankers heard her to say was just what they would hope for from a prospective presidential candidate: Beating up the finance industry isn’t going to improve the economy—it needs to stop.

Source: “Hillary Clinton Tells Wall Street She Believes Anti-Wall Street Rhetoric ‘Foolish’,” Firedoglake, 12 December 2013.

That’s why it’s not clear that this is a Rove ratfucking operating — it might be a clueless HIllary operation instead. You tell me, folks: how politically smart is it, when you’re a prospective presidential candidate in the midst of the biggest economic collapse since the Great Depression, to give two speeches to a bunch of Wall Street crime lords explaining that we need to “stop bashing the bankers”?
