¯\_(ツ)_/¯ RT @mikiebarb: Jeb Bush identified himself as “Hispanic” in a 2009 voter registration form, NYT found. http://t.co/9QNJaHQLGa

— daveweigel (@daveweigel) April 6, 2015

From the NYTimes article:

… Mr. Bush, a former Florida governor and likely presidential candidate, was born in Texas and hails from one of America’s most prominent political dynasties. But on at least one occasion, it appears he got carried away with his appeal to Spanish-speaking voters and claimed he actually was Hispanic…

A Bush spokeswoman could offer no explanation for the characterization. However, Mr. Bush took to Twitter late on Monday morning to call the situation a mistake…

“If even an educated, well-off, socially prominent individual like Jeb Bush can’t figure out Florida’s Voter ID system… “ Another missed opportunity:

… The Florida Democratic Party tweeted out a photo of a registration form, photoshopped to include an image of Bush and a warning to call his lawyers. Official Florida voter registration forms state that “It is a 3rd degree felony to submit false information. Maximum penalties are $5,000 and/or 5 years in prison.”

“The inattention to detail is not something you want in a presidential candidate,” Max Steele, the press secretary for the Florida Democrats, told Bloomberg. Steele said the group doesn’t intend to issue any kind of complaint against Bush…

***********

Apart from noting just how much the Bush Crime Family can get away with, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

Many people in the US don’t know about what UKIP is. Here’s what his school teachers had to say about Nigel Farage, their leader:

The letter says that when one teacher said Farage was “a fascist, but that was no reason why he would not make a good prefect,” there was “considerable reaction” from colleagues.

The letter continues: “Another colleague, who teaches the boy, described his publicly professed racist and neo-fascist views; and he cited a particular incident in which Farage was so offensive to a boy in his set, that he had to be removed from the lesson. This master stated his view that this behaviour was precisely why the boy should not be made a prefect. Yet another colleague described how, at a Combined Cadet Force (CCF) camp organised by the college, Farage and others had marched through a quiet Sussex village very late at night shouting Hitler-youth songs.”

The Conservatives are expected to to try to form a government in partnership with UKIP.

So, eye surgery today. It seemed to go smoothly, other than fog and lots of hair-raising early Interstate commute. 30 seconds before we get down on it he, Dr. Retinal Surgeon told me there’s an 85% chance we will not be able to save your lens implant. Well, OK then, I guess.

FYWP. I just lost a beautiful paragraph about losing my retina in all this. And why evolve irises anyway? Then it gets surreal. At some point in weeks or months I’m to be fitted for a “Narcissus” contact lens that simulates an iris of whatever color one chooses. I may lean toward a slightly different color than my extant iris. I’ll be like syfy movie characters, or Aeon Flux.

But my retina is intact and my eyeball wasn’t punctured, so that matters. Still curious about the evolutionary purpose of irises and individual colors—familial ID, attraction? que?

The anesthesia was just a 5 minute black out so they can inject (!) that old sweet “numbing medicine” into one’s eye, which lasts for a merciful long time, hours and hours.

But once the limits are reached and old pain comes around again–no tylenol for me and ibuprofoen not allowed– ER gave me tam idol? Sounds like Damital, or Cramital. I took two over 2 days, and no, not for me. So I start drinking 15 minutes before my usual time and determined to rock out with invading my one tablespoon stash of stems and seeds.

But hey, we’ve all been in closer jams than this, right?

    @fleeting expletive:

My Dad was being treated for CMML leukemia by M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He eventually needed cataract surgery as he neared 80. He was referred to a top-drawer surgical practice in near downtown Houston.

Note that my dad had needed thick glasses his entire life!

The optical exam he had lasted for hours, we (my Texan brother and I) helped him move from one lab to another for another exam. But all this paid off when the day arrived.

We took him to a “rent-an-operating theater” center for his eye surgery. Afterwards we were wheeling him to the car, and he told us that the surgeon and told him that they believed that he would NOT need glasses post-operative.

I thought the drugs were working too well on him!

But later on that day, he told us that the Dr had told him to try getting around without any glasses, and for reading, to try 2 or 3 different strength reading glasses at the drugstore!!!

Well, it turned out that they had repaired his astigmatism and myopia with the new lenses they installed to correct his cataracts!!

So I’m hoping your work turned out as well as my dad’s did!

I’m confused about the contact lens myself. It sounds like one of those vanity/party things, toys. I don’t know if they can carry actual corrective vision metrics. Maybe there has been a real medical ned for iris contacts, and it got exploited for cosmetic purposes.
I hope there is a new implant on the horizon that can bring my vision back to at least what it was. The older IOL from 2006 worked as well as it did for nine years. Surely they can do better now. And with a contact lens iris to boot.
