Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

American History and Black History can not be separated.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Bark louder, little dog.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Let me file that under fuck it.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Let there be snark.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Hate to be a debbie-downer, but I’m cynical enough to believe that certain media is just looking for a mugshot for Walter Scott (that is the media’s M.O. in these cases), but instead hopefully they show this pick of Walter Scott in his uniform when he was a member of the Coast Guard.

Oh and the original lawyer for the officer is no longer with him. IDK, maybe he got a better one, or the lawyer learned of the tape and decided he couldn’t do it.

Stan Freberg (born Stanley Friberg; August 7, 1926 – April 7, 2015) was an American author, recording artist, animation voice actor, comedian, radio personality, puppeteer and advertising creative director, whose career began in 1944. He remained active in the industry into his late 80s, more than 70 years after entering it.

Oh boy, here we go again, except that there’s video from April 4th. And what the video shows is a white police officer shooting at an unarmed fleeing man eight times (with a pause for the eighth shot) and hitting him five times. In the back. Viewer discretion advised and all that…from NYT:

South Carolina Officer Is Charged With Murder in Black Man’s Death

This appears to be out-and-out fucking murder, followed by what to my uneducated eye looks like an attempt to plant evidence. And South Carolina authorities, amazingly enough, aren’t fooling around with grand juries.

    BTW,

This is how the fatal shooting of Walter Scott was reported before the release of the video:

Police and witnesses say Scott tried to run from Slager before turning to fight for the officer’s Taser. It was during that scuffle that the officer fired his service weapon, fatally wounding Scott.

    http://www.abcnews4.com/story/28725562/coroner-identifies-man-shot-killed-by-north-charleston-police-officer

Sound familiar!!!! It’s as if police officers are trained to write a script…hmmmm. So who were these witnesses? No video, we rely on witnesses…

As the victim’s family and lawyers said, if not for this video, would we know the truth. I suspect we all know the answer.

Here’s one tiny beef with the NY Times story: if someone has been shot, you don’t perform CPR on them. The only thing chest compressions will do for someone who’s been shot is kill them faster via blood loss.

(ETA: Rescue breathing, possibly, but not chest compressions FFS. I know this is First Aid 101 because I just took the class.)

Other than that, yeah, it looks as though a man was executed for the capital crime of being behind on his child support. Now his kids don’t have a father at all.

Since this is an open thread ….

Taking “baby steps” to automate my house. Started with a few Bluetooth light bulbs and outlets. Figured better to do it this way then go “all in” with climate control and locks (I can’t see myself ever doing that BTW). I have to admit it isn’t nearly as cool as I thought it would be. In fact kind of a waste of money at this point.

As I said in the previous post I am a tech nerd so when I see a problem I tend to look to tech to solve it. I did that here. In hindsight I think I didn’t have a problem so much of a non-percieved problem (wanted my utility bills to be lower) looked to tech to solve. Ended up spending more money than needed.

I should just be more anal about turning off all my electronics (already anal about lights).

BTW: My $85 Ilumi light blub is neat. But more of a parlor trick than something functional. A dimmer will do the same (which I already have with the halogen lights in the room I use it in).

    OT —
There’s a remarkable video at the NYTimes website of a white Charleston, SC police officer (aka, the murderer) shooting and killing an African American man as he runs away from the police officer. The officer claims he feared for his life. They are charging the officer with murder, so all we need now is an all white jury to acquit the police officer.

In a curious detail, the police officer retrieves something from several meters away from the body and drops it very near the body. The assumption is this is the officer’s taser, which he claimed the dead man had taken from him. I guess to strengthen his story, the officer must have felt the taser actually needed to be near the man he was claiming threatened his life.

In one more case of proportionate justice, the man was stopped for a broken tail light. There was absolutely no need to shoot this man, since he was running away and his identity was known to the police. And just out of curiosity, if someone is running away from you, but you still feel you need to shoot the person, what would be wrong with aiming for the legs? The officer discharged his gun eight times — surely he’s a good enough shot to hit the guy’s legs at least once. That would slow him down and make his capture inevitable. (The fleeing man doesn’t look like a sprinter.) On the other hand, the video reveals no reason at all for the cop to use his gun.

It does appear there was absolutely no reason to fire your weapon at this fleeing individual.
But for the love of everything else. Please stop suggesting someone intent on firing their weapon at a fleeing individual is capable of hitting a chicken wing on the fly.
They aren’t going to. They teach four round bursts, center mass, and the reality is that human beings caught in the adrenaline thrall can’t be coached out of it.
Police departments have cut way back on live fire training, much less tactical training.

True, not all of them are capable of hitting a chicken wing, and the idea of shooting someone in the leg to stop them is not plausible. All the training, as you note, is to shoot for center of mass for an excellent reason – because that’s the biggest target. If the objective is to stop someone from doing something horrible right this instant, which presumably is the only valid reason to use a gun on another human, that’s the easiest way. On the other hand, from what I’ve read the cop (Slager) hit the perpetrator/victim (Scott) with five out of eight shots, so (purely from a shooting standpoint) he didn’t do so bad either. What with the adrenalin pumping and all that, hitting five out of eight shots is probably pretty good for a guy who might hit the range once a month. Although the pause between the first seven shots and the eighth shot does look like a pause to get a better sight picture.

If he hadn’t shot an unarmed man in the back, I could almost feel sorry for this Slager fellow. He’s gone big time and gone viral, and stands all-but-convicted with his face known worldwide in just a few short hours. He’s not just up shit creek without a paddle, he’s head down in shit creek.

    @Jim Kakalios:

    Two words: Tom Toles.

Yeah, Danziger is great, but I’d give the edge to Toles.

@Jim Kakalios: Toles is good. Danziger is an artist as well as good.
