Adorable. That must be the downside of fostering, having to let them go. Lily is hilarious. Puppies might as well be invisible, but TREAT snaps her right to.
@Helen: Then you keep them out of the bedroom. But you’re gone an awfully long time per day for a dog you’d barely see. And when that huge dogwalking fee got to be too much what would you do?
I have entire routines as a highly allergic person to cope with a hostile (to me) world: frequent hand washing, animal no-go zones like my bedroom, frequent vacuuming. I’m also allergic to mold, pollen, most preservatives, and lots of anaesthesia agents, and morphine, which we found out after surgery once. I did have to give up horseback riding after a really severe reaction, but horses are easy to avoid in urban areas.
I decided long ago you can deprive yourself of living the life you want because it’s more work, or you can figure out ways to do what you desire and cope with the effects. But, having described my nutty routine just so I can keep rescuing, I understand no one else wanting to do ANY of that.

@Helen: May I suggest you check out rabbits? Contrary to common belief, they are sociable and have a lot of personality if you interact with them. In the wild, they’re naturally active at dawn and dusk, so if you’re gone for a long work day, it will be while they’re sleeping.
If you find a rescue group, you can test out whether you’re allergic to them before adopting.
I grew up with cats and dogs, but my wife is allergic to both, so for many years, we’ve been happy rabbit people.

We took our dog to the dog park a couple of weeks ago and he was playing with another dog somewhat less vigorously than those two. The other dog’s owner angrily insisted that we take our dog away, because he was “visciously biting” his dog, and he didn’t appreciate it. We tried to explain that mouthing is part of dog play, but he was having none of it. His dog was being visciously bitten and he was angry.

@Helen: Please don’t. It wouldn’t be fair to the dog. They’re pack animals, social creatures who need interaction. Dogs left alone all day often develop behavior problems from boredom and lack of stimulus.
I had dogs while growing up and when I moved out on my own I missed their companionship terribly. I almost succumbed a few times, one time particularly when a friend’s golden retriever had pups. In the end, I knew I couldn’t guarantee that I’d be able to do the right job in caring for a dog. It wasn’t until I had a family of my own and knew there’d be someone around most of every day that I got two rescue pups, siblings.

Glad to hear you say that. Ever since the upgrade to 5.0 the performance on mine has been inconsistent, often sluggish. I thought it was maybe the new OS overloading the old(er) machine.
That said, I have been thinking of getting a Nexus 9, because I do like using a tablet and would like the bigger screen. Maybe even get a Bluetooth keyboard. Would be interesting to see if I could travel with just that and no laptop.
I have Office 365 on my laptop but haven’t tried the Android version. Really need Word and Excel when I travel, Outlook less so.

@Omnes Omnibus: I have a client who swears, on the basis of her extremely allergic child’s lack of problems, that Russian Siberian cats are, in fact, hypoallergenic. They’re handsome kitties, but if you’re going to lay out the bucks, make certain they’re tested for the cardiopathy genetic mutation (and not just, “the vet says they’re OK because no murmur” – there’s not always a murmur, and the problem shows up after they mature). Same problem in some Persians and Maine Coons also.

@Steeplejack (tablet): Or… you could get a Windows tablet. I got a 10″ Windows 8.1(not RT) for $150 at Best Buy. It should be upgradable to Win10 when it comes out. It’s no Surface 3 but a nice tablet(I also ended up springing for the $50 keyboard as well).
@Helen: I understand completely. I am out of my apartment for 12-14 hours per day, so a dog is out of the question. I was very allergic to cats, but thought it might stop if I lived with some, and it did! (After about 6 months. Now I’m allergic to long-haired dogs.) I’m now on my second pair of cats (first ones lived almost to 20 yrs), and I can’t tell you how much pleasure and interest they add to life. I’d recommend getting more than one, so they have something to play with other than your stuff, and so they have someone to interact with while you’re out.
@Helen: I’m one of those people who do not want to live without a pet. Preferably another personable mammal.
In the situation you are describing, two cats would be best. Most cats have social needs.
Cats and the allergic human describes some strategies (satby refers to) allergic people use to still have cats.
I agree that 11 hours away from home is too many hours for a dog to handle. I found new, terrific, homes for my two dogs when my life melted down and I could not spend time with them. It was rough but the best decision.
If you really crave pet contact there might be a no kill shelter in your area who would welcome a volunteer to walk and play and keep the dogs socialized.
But as seen in this thread, the “furry people” vibe of a good pet relationship requires certain time and management demands. After a lot of pet exploration I’ve settled on cats as my favorite. But then, my husband has a chronic illness and is always home. My hobbies are reading and writing. We live in an apartment in an extreme climate.
Having only a few waking hours of the day sadly precludes the intense experience you seek. Because it is a SOCIAL one.
@Steeplejack (tablet): Everything works kind of sketchy on my 1st gen Nexus. It’s a known thing. There are some things you can turn off that have cleared up some issues, mostly eye candy sorts of things. (Looking for the list now.)
The Facebook app has been pegged as a contributor to the problem, as has Chrome.
Personally, I love Firefox for Android, especially now that there is an easy way to toggle Javascript off and on.
Have you cleared your cache yet?
I’m seriously considering a Windows 8 tablet now that there are decent ones out in the 7 inch size.
@raven: and when she can’t (because things change and people can lose those highly paid jobs allowing animal care and walking) what happens to the dog? I’m not trying to be mean here, I’m living how hard it is to keep fulfilling obligations taken on during what was a much better paid employment. A lot of animals lost their homes during the last downturn, rescue groups were overwhelmed with the numbers. People lost their jobs, then their homes, and had to move places where they couldn’t keep their pets.
I know nothing is certain in life, but that’s a huge chunk of change for dogwalkers and if there was a downturn that caused a drop in income but not in hours away from home that would be a really difficult situation, one that often means the pet is looking for a new home.
99.
raven
@satby: I don’t care one way or the other, I was asked and that’s my answer.
@Helen: No. Do not get a dog if you are not available for that much time as a normal course. It would be horrible for the dog. Get yourself two cats.

@Helen: Only one other suggestion, and I saw this work with some friends:
One traveled constantly for work, but had a dog.
So the dog spent most of its time with another friend (retired), who had lost his last dog to old age, and did not want to take on full responsibility for a new dog.
Dog loved the situation: always somebody around for attention and walks; the traveler got the dogs weekends and a lot of nights, and paid all the bills. The retired friend got the companionship without any financial or longterm commitment.
It was a win win situation. Lasted all of the dog’s natural life.
Could you work out something like that, perhaps with a neighbor in the building or very nearby? Someone who could deal with the dog more when you’re away? You might find someone who would love to have a dog, but can’t take on the full responsibility.
Cuz they do get lonely. I learned my own dog, newly adopted, was howling while I was at work. A work at home neighbor complained politely.
I wish I knew somebody I could get into the dog sharing business with. I am so ready for another dog, but just can’t do it fulltime for maybe 2-3 years … but they are so dear. I walk my neighbor’s dog frequently. That helps (both me and the pup).
Wow, Lovey was really beating the crap out of her brother. I thought he was the more dominant one.
And yes, so funny that Lily was serenely doing her toilette next to all that commotion. But notice that the pups were very careful not to bang into her.
114.
kindness
Lilly knows ‘treat’ though. Good girl. I pity the big dogs when Lovey goes. Thurston will turn to them. Sometimes they’ll like it. Lot of times they’ll let him know they don’t. Such is the life of a dog I guess.

Indeed. My wife is lucky that she can take her job to work (both her own office and another one) and that dog gets plenty of attention on a daily basis. Just wish she would get a little more exercise.
120.
WaterGirl
@Elizabelle: I thought it was Lovey, too, but I don’t know if I can explain how I reached that conclusion. Either way, it was an awesome video.
Do we know what time the puppy exchange is? I could never foster because I would get so attached that I wouldn’t be able to let them go.
@WaterGirl: That is most assuredly Lovey making all the noises. She’s got a good game face and takes her wrasslin’ very seriously. She instigates most of the play.
122.
WaterGirl
@John Cole +0: I was admiring that about her. My little guy is just like that even though he’s about 1/4 of the size of my bigger dog. He gives as good as he gets and it’s really fun to watch.
We have 2 dogs on a 100 acre farm (really a wood lot, just hillsides covered with trees!) and our neighbors have 3 dogs.
When they go to work, their 3 dogs come down to our house, because their people are gone. One dog runs around outside with our dogs for their morning run to check their woods out. But mostly we have 5 dogs during the work day.
The dogs come in, lay down, and hang out until 6:15, when it’s time to go home. When the weather is bad, it can be hard to get a couple of the dogs to go outside to get home. When daylight time changes happen, it takes the dogs a couple of days to adjust.
They really like to be with people, though, even if there is a group of dogs living in the woods! (We are known to give them a Milkbone or such treat every so often, 2 or 3 times a week, no doubt the only reason they visit us!)
@Tenar Darell: That was amazing! Did the short win anything?

WaterGirl
@Steeplejack: Thanks! Off to ride the exercise bike, looks like by the time I get off, Lovey will have a new owner.

@WaterGirl: Yeah, the first fifty or so are really hard to let go – but eventually you’re just really really glad they’re going to a good home and you can bring home a new baby, or litter of babies. But that’s the deal – THEY HAVE TO GET ADOPTED OUT, or you won’t have room for more.
128.

@Katy: Holy crap! The first fifty? I have the utmost respect for people who foster, but I don’t think I’m cut out for it because I get way too attached.

A sweet, fun video – thanks JGC.
I hope there is video – or at least a few photos – of Lovey’s adoption tomorrow.

Switched over to the MLB channel on the off chance that the extra-innings Sox-Yanks is on. It is. Bottom of the 15th. Now I can’t figure out why I would want to watch it.

I can’t imagine life without the critters – especially in the bed. The pics last night were great. So is this video. It’s been 30 years since I have not had a cat in the house. That goes back through college to the ‘rents house.

@Tree With Water: Speaking of 34 year olds in the MLB, Mark Teixeira is no longer one of them. He turned 35 at midnight, and we now start the top of the 16th.
I’m going to miss the F1 qualifying that starts in 2 hours at this rate.

@Steeplejack (phone): I tuned in earlier to see how fat Pablo Sandoval has got. Giants just got beat, so now I’m headed back to Yankee Stadium.

@Tree With Water: Well, shit. Obviously, I didn’t think so.

@Redshift: never thought much of rabbits until I got to know some who were growing up. Couldn’t believe how much personality they each had, and what a pleasure it was to be around them. Cats and a dog preclude having one now, but would love to have the chance again. Never knew rabbits could be such fun and lovable individuals.

Middle of the 17th. I can’t watch it, but I keep checking back.
I was at the Mets-Braves game that started on July 4, 1985, and ended at 4:00 a.m. the next morning after 19 innings. That was some hard, gutsy spectating, especially since they quit selling beer in the seventh inning.

@Steeplejack (tablet): Absolutely one of the most enjoyable sports events I’ve ever watched was last year’s 18 inning Giants-Nationals extravaganza in the playoffs. I hung on every pitch, and naturally being a Giants fan dug the ending. It was mind blowingly fun, just a great experience..

Glad to hear you say that. Ever since the upgrade to 5.0 the performance on mine has been inconsistent, often sluggish. I thought it was maybe the new OS overloading the old(er) machine.

WereBear

I wonder what’s going to happen when Thurston Howl turns that puppy energy on Lily, Rosie and/or Steve.
He is gonna miss his sister for wrestling.

A work at home neighbor complained politely.
satby
@Elizabelle: That is brilliant!
Helen, would that work?
Elizabelle
@satby: Glad you liked it.
I wish I knew somebody I could get into the dog sharing business with. I am so ready for another dog, but just can’t do it fulltime for maybe 2-3 years … but they are so dear. I walk my neighbor’s dog frequently. That helps (both me and the pup).

Thanks for the video. So cute.

Wow, Lovey was really beating the crap out of her brother. I thought he was the more dominant one.
And yes, so funny that Lily was serenely doing her toilette next to all that commotion. But notice that the pups were very careful not to bang into her.

WaterGirl
@Elizabelle: I thought it was Lovey, too, but I don’t know if I can explain how I reached that conclusion. Either way, it was an awesome video.
Do we know what time the puppy exchange is? I could never foster because I would get so attached that I wouldn’t be able to let them go.
John Cole +0
@WaterGirl: That is most assuredly Lovey making all the noises. She’s got a good game face and takes her wrasslin’ very seriously. She instigates most of the play.
WaterGirl
@John Cole +0: I was admiring that about her. My little guy is just like that even though he’s about 1/4 of the size of my bigger dog. He gives as good as he gets and it’s really fun to watch.

@satby:

WaterGirl
@Katy: Holy crap! The first fifty? I have the utmost respect for people who foster, but I don’t think I’m cut out for it because I get way too attached.
