Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

The lights are all blinking red.

Everybody saw this coming.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

He really is that stupid.

I actually liked the video. It took me a second to realize it was actually THE video because I was expecting her to be talking to the camera right away, and I thought it was a commercial (you know how half of youtube has those “You can skip this shit we know you are going to skip, but we’re going to fuck with you for five seconds anyway”), but when I realized that was the video, I went back and watched from the start.

I liked it. It seems like she softened her tone a little, too. Still think it is ridiculous our stupid population requires candidates to all wear variants of red and blue, but I actually liked the video.

Why have only 37k people watched it?

BTW- Let’s not forget about Donna Edwards. Regardless of who wins the Presidency, we could use someone strong in the Senate.

Kinda choked me up, actually. I saw lots of nods to groups which are solidly democratic (Hispanics, people of color, young women, LGBT) and I felt proud to be part of that coalition.

Hear, hear. See also Tammy Duckworth, Ted Strickland, Joe Sestak (maybe? don’t quite get that one, is it Obama’s fault? Or have we moved on to Hillary’s fault?), Florida, Wisconsin… we’re gonna need to run the table. Is Boxer’s retirement effective next cycle?

I agree. She may not be my perfect candidate (and depending on who else, if anybody, decides to primary challenge her, I may not even vote for her until the general) but I’m pleased with the tone, the inclusiveness, and the general message. I could warm to this Hillary, and I hope I will have every reason to.

And “bog standard Dem” in this day and age is a good look on Hillary, especially since she’s apparently glommed onto the Liz Warren side of the party.

I liked the video a lot. I like that it shows an actual true reflection of society, rather than Whiteyville of the GOP fantasies. And I liked the new attitude, too. From Benen:

The focus is on people – a diverse group of all kinds of people – not on Clinton. In her 2007 kickoff, her big applause line was, “I’m in it to win it.” In 2015, Clinton’s pitch is fundamentally different: “I’m hitting the road to earn your vote. Americans need a champion and I want to be you’re champion. It’s your time.”

The shift in message and tone is the exact opposite of what we’ve come to expect from candidates who put themselves at the center of their pitch. Clinton, to great effect, is flipping that model on its head.

Not looking forward to a year and a half of conservatives screaming about how she’s a demon feminazi lying monster, as well as TRUE PROGRESSIVES admonishing any of us who like her that we’re terrible traitors to the left and not real liberals and blah blah. Look, I’m not gonna demand you support her, but don’t tell me I’m an asshole or not a liberal if I do. You go find me the progressive sparkle-pony who both satisfies your every single requirement and who could also win the election.

    I’ll wait.

Anyway, yay, looking forward to her debating any of the fuckbuckets the GOP ends up with.

I have What’s Going Around and have been stuck in the house all weekend, so figured I might as well get back on the Intertubes for the evening. Cole, does Thurston seem to be looking for Lovey?

I watched the Hillary video and am underwhelmed. Presidential election choices will be a sane Wall Street whore (Hillary) or a crazy Wall Street whore (whomever the Republicans nominate). Out of 350,000,000 people, the parties can’t do any better than this? A campaign slogan of “Hillary: She’s Sane” or “Hillary: You Could Do Worse” does not motivate me to stuff envelopes or whatever political volunteers do these days. Granted the flagrant corruption is not all her fault; but, benefiting so richly from it, will she be inclined to try to clean up? Not likely, and neither would her Republican counterpart.

I wonder if “identity politics,” stirring up demographic groups against each other, isn’t so prevalent these days because it’s the only way the parties can think of to keep citizens from noticing how alike they are in their corruption. If so, it’s not really working. What seems to be happening instead is a voter thinks, ” Well, I’m not thrilled with the Evil Corrupt Party, but since I’m [gay, black, poor white, Jewish, Christian, what-have-you] the Corrupt Evil Party sure isn’t thrilled with ME, so I guess I’m stuck with the Evil Corrupt Party.”. Then both parties, seeing results, double down on the Balkanization and the cycle continues. I don’t think it will lead to the horrors of the actual Balkans, but it is sure no way to run a country.

Aren’t you glad I returned for the evening? I’m going back to bed.

    @Pogonip:

I wonder if “identity politics,” stirring up demographic groups against each other, isn’t so prevalent these days because it’s the only way the parties can think of to keep citizens from noticing how alike they are in their corruption

In a country with no detectable appetite for social democracy, the only progress you’re going to make changing the economic landscape is at the margins (direct gov’t origination of student loans, small increases in federal minimum wage,e.g. small ball stuff), and sporadically. The other stuff gets done because, well, it can get done.

    Leaders don’t lead, they follow.

Seriously addressing slavery — the salient issue of the early 19th century — was sedulously avoided by all three major parties, and for as long as possible.

Inequality bids fair to trace the same arc.

@JordanRules: The one thing Google has got is server power. They can check numbers. Who knows if they compile them accurately. But they can certainly run some validation scenarios. Ad rates depend on it.

Also, wondering how Twitter establishes a level playing field for politics about trending, or if they even try.

Twitter has certain celebs that they won’t let trend. The most popular ones and/or those with the biggest fan bases on Twitter. (Names I know they block to trend include Justin Bieber, One Direction, and Adam Lambert. Probably GaGa) Otherwise the same names would take over the trends every day. Cut down on selling promoted tweets.

Have wondered if “Clinton” was one of those names or not. Guessing Obama is. But wonder what Twitter will do for politicians who are celebs.

Thanks for mentioning Donna Edward, JGC. I think she’ll have her work cut out for her in this campaign, and will need all the help she can get.

She was on a local weekly radio politics show a few weeks ago; you can hear that discussion by clicking on the link included at this site. After being introduced up front, they talked about other things – primarily about former civil rights leader and DC Congressman Walter Fauntroy and his current travails – until bringing her in after about the 4:10 mark. It was an interesting interview, and IMO worth your time if you’re interested in Edwards’ campaign. The whole interview runs about 21 minutes (~4:13 – 24:45).
….At about the 17 minute mark, a caller is disappointed in having heard nothing in the media about her accomplishments in the House. DE’s response is honest, but also likely to be a problem for her IMO (tl;dl: she has largely worked behind the scenes, and her results don’t make the headlines).
….Apparently in some earlier interview she expressed an interest in going to Mars, even if the trip was one-way, so she was asked/teased about that. No big thing there, but given her activist past and basic personality, I wonder if that is a manifestation of a certain restlessness and frustration at being part of the largely powerless minority party in the House.

More recently, and coming as a bit of a surprise to me (maybe it shouldn’t have), she did NOT get the endorsement of Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, who instead endorsed Rep. Van Hollen (MD-8) of nearby Montgomery County. Van Hollen already has the support of most (if not all) MoCo Democratic officeholders. Harry Reid also endorsed Van Hollen pretty much from the get-go.

Elijah Cummings (MD-7) also says he is considering a run, and if that happens, it can only hurt Donna’s chances of winning support in Cumming’s Baltimore district.

I’ve left out a whole bunch of possible contenders, but this month-old post by a cranky old journo who’s been covering MD politics for ages ain’t totally bad, outside of his subjectively hostile summary of Edwards’ far-left liberal politics and legislative track record.

Not gonna happen. The Koch brothers are more than happy to be left out of the ads, and Bush is definitely in the school that believes in hiding their true intentions rather than trumpeting them. Instead, there will be lots of shots of plain, honest, hard working white folks talking about how we need sensible solutions.

Not a Hilz fan but really liked the video and what it says about her as a candidate. She’s learning & adapting. Which is a good thing.

I saw lots of women of varying ages. I saw not one but two gay couples (one gay one lesbian). Including a quite clear support for gay marriage. I saw Latinos speaking Spanish – who were also clearly business OWNERS. Also saw a quite adorbs interracial couple with their dog. What appeared to be a single mom or two. Blue collar white with a flag was in there at some point.

I really liked how unrelentingly diverse it was. Speaks well to her hopefully realizing playing it safe won’t work and shying away from Dem core values won’t work. A Hillary that embraces gay marriage with a “you got a problem with that?” attitude is going to win a lot more respect from the squishy center (& from the skeptical base). A former aide added that Sestak’s staff turnover is not as much of a drawback as one might expect. “Other Members rely on their staff to keep themselves informed, but with him, it’s top-down,” the former aide said. “He knows what he wants to accomplish, so in a sense, he just needs people to dictate to.”

Which, if an anonymous source in a wikipedia article is to be believed, roughly confirms Cervante’s take.

I don’t see the point in attacking fellow Dems and calling them sexist and racist for not supporting Hillary before the primary even starts but that is what some Hillary supporters are doing now. It’s pretty ugly.

And the Dem establishment is clearly circling the wagons and trying to push out any competition for Hillary.

I can’t paste the one from DNC HQ because it is just a massive picture asking me if I am in for 2016. But it goes to http://www.mydemocrats.org/Hillary.

    Here’s the one from Schumer:

It’s time: Hillary Clinton just announced she’s running for president!

I was there the night Hillary won her first, tough bid for Senate after months of hard work. And now I hope to be there when she declares victory in November of 2016, as the first woman president-elect in the United States.

Make no mistake — she’ll win. And when Hillary wins, we’ll all win. The country will have a president that values the middle class and fights for families the way Hillary has her entire career.

Join with me now: Be one of the first to stand with Hillary, and contribute to make her presidency a reality.

Hillary Clinton and I served alongside one another as New Yorkers in the U.S. Senate — and her qualifications and experience are simply unparalleled.

She fought beside me again and again to save jobs when times got tough for America before the economic recession. We stood together against fierce opposition to move forward with gun licensing legislation. And with heavy hearts, we worked to procure relief funding for New York after the tragic terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

For eight years, Hillary and I led the Democratic party forward in the Senate while George W. Bush was in the White House — and she’s the best prepared to vanquish the Tea Party candidates the Republican party has rolled out.

Hillary just entered the race for president. Contribute now, and help her get ready to take on Tea Party Republicans and make history in the process.

If you’re as excited as I am to welcome Hillary to this race, I hope you’ll stand with her today.

    Thanks for all you do,

    Chuck Schumer
    U.S. Senator

Here’s another one I got from DNC:

    Amy —

Hillary Clinton just announced that she is officially running for president in 2016, and we are so excited to welcome her to the race.

Even though this is just the beginning of the next race for the White House, it’s a crucial period to spread the word on why our 45th president should be a Democrat — and start helping Americans get to know the GOP candidates.

Add your name to welcome Secretary Clinton to the race, and say you’re committed to putting a Democrat in the White House in 2016.

This election cycle is shaping up to be an interesting one, Amy, and that means that all of us Democrats need to stick together and keep our eye on the prize: Continuing to fight for the middle class, for education, for cleaner air and water, and a stronger economy — and protecting the progress we’ve already made.

We’ll keep you updated as this race begins to take shape.

But right now, say you’re in for 2016:

“When we put Hillary in the Oval Office, she will make history and change history. She will take our hopes and dreams with her.

That looks like a standard fundraising email to me, though. I would imagine that the first thing they’ll want to do is find out how many of the people from those lists will actually donate to Hillary. If people feel that’s pushy and feel that Hillary is being pushed on them, then unsubscribing from all those lists will send a message.

@askew: I am guessing that this is someone’s idea of a strong rollout for the campaign. If you think it’s pushy, then unsubscribe to each list as soon as you get the email messages. That’s what I plan to do.

I think we’ll know better once someone else like O’Malley declares their candidacy. Will the DSCC also send out messages for him? My best guess is that the answer will be yes, but we will know soon enough.

All the DSCC cares about at this point is collecting names and email addresses. They won’t get mine, but then they never do because I prefer to give directly to candidates.

I’m sure it is their goal to make Hillary seem like a fate accompli. Their wishing it doesn’t make it so. A lot of folks here today seemed to like the video, so maybe it will be all over but the shouting. I sincerely hope not, but everybody gets to make their own choice.

Not sure I agree with that statement. I imagine the DNC wants Hillary because they have decided she has the best chance of winning.

I can’t recall if it was BooMan or the fellow who took over for Benen at the Political Animal, but one of them talked last week about how we need – and should want – additional candidates for several reasons. One of those reasons was that you need an understudy even with Hillary in case she falls ill or their candidacy blows up for some other reason. You always want someone else waiting in the wings, at the very least.

Look at the crazy republican candidates who were expected to win their senate races and then something unexpected happens and suddenly the whole race looks different.

No, Hillary and Bill have already pushed out any competition for HIllary. They’ve been very effective in clearing the field by making it clear that people who split the vote Nader-style in Demo primaries this time will suffer the vengeance of the very long Clintonian memory.

Well, tough tit. That’s bare-knuckle politics. Deal with it. Obama did the same thing to potential Democratic primary opponents in 2012. Them’s the breaks in rough-and-tumble real world politics.

Sure we want a choice. This presidential campaign, we don’t get one. Sometimes we do get a choice, sometimes we don’t. Look at 1984. We wanted a choice back then. But Mondale had done the spadework, he was the pre-eminent frontrunner, he had amassed such a huge warchest, and he was so wired into the political establishment that no other Democrat had a chance of getting the nomination that year.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — Hillary isn’t my favorite pol by a long shot, but given the lunacy of the Republican presidential candidates, if she runs I will damn sure vote for her.

Yes, I get the same kind of spam because I’m involved at the grassroots level in my area as a Demo field worker. I went door-to-door last election, I manned the phones, blah blah. This is the kind of politispam you get if you’re involved at the local grassroots level. Learn to like it.

The local Demo organizations have a tendency to cast every election as the “make or break moment” with breathless “We must support candidate [X] this time or [insert predictions of ultimate doom here].” Yeah, that’s the way it works with local Demo field organizations, in my experience. I don’t take it seriously.

Although those claims happened to be true in the 2008 presidential election.

I guess the local grassroots demo organizations learned their goddamn lesson the hard way from the 2000 (s)election.
