Apparently Nate Silver is accusing Vox of stealing their charts or something.
Yo, @voxdotcom: Y'all should probably stop stealing people's charts without proper attribution. You do this all the time, to 538 & others.
— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) April 13, 2015
Only about 20% of the maps @VoxMaps tweets were actually made by Vox. Always a link to a Vox story, rarely to original source.

Team WIN THE MORNING of course has more, but you get the general idea.
Open thread.

The politics nerds are getting as pissy and hard to take as the baseball number nerds.
CONGRATULATIONS!
I would probably care more save that Nate chucked his credibility a long time ago when he sold out to the NYT, and then turned his site into the shitty linkbait fest it is today.
All the same, don’t steal charts, quotes, material, music, videos and other internet stuff without asking, folks. Not OK.
Doug r
That link plantation Huffington Post is terrible for this.
Violet
This made me laugh out loud! I needed that. Thanks.
askew
Man, I forgot about Nate Silver. I thought he abandoned politics for ESPN.
askew
I am in a meeting where we are talking about what kind of leadership shadow I cast and something about mood elevators. Kill me now.
RSR
Pretty amusing all around, but I’m probably #teamnate. He went to the #heist.
Villago Delenda Est
@askew: Well, he seems to be keeping his hand in both milieus. You know, back to his roots (baseball stats) but still looking at political numbers on the side.
Villago Delenda Est
@askew: I smell conslutants.
askew
@Villago Delenda Est:
Ah, thanks. I have a hard time keeping track of these pundits/bloggers. I thought he did great work in the 2008 primary and general election but I lost track of him after he went to NYT because I am too cheap to pay for a subscription.
Amir Khalid
Someone was asking yesterday, whatever happened to Nate Silver after The New York Times? So now we know.
In other news, another Republican Boy-Senator has declared his presidential candidacy: Marco Rubio. FiveThirtyEight does seem to like Marco’s chances, at least of getting the nomination.
Valdivia
the title, total win.

@Villago Delenda Est:
Sure seems like we’ve been the victim of consultants. A co-worker of mine said his leadership shadow that he cast was aggressively indifferent. I kind of like that response. Meetings like this make me fantasize about winning the lottery.
Cervantes
When will he publish the statistical analysis that proves this assertion?

@Valdivia:
Gee, I don’t know. Theft per se is not a violent act.

@Valdivia:
Seconded.

@CONGRATULATIONS!:
The stuff he wrote while at the Times seemed to be of the same quality as before, and his current site doesn’t have any stupid “one weird trick” or “watch Jon Stewart destroy X” headlines. They’re all pretty much what they say.

Shocker! Vox is a scummy operation. Well who’d a thunk that would happen?

It strikes me that it is no wonder we don’t get decent coverage of the value of labor, wage equality, workplace issues, etc when the new business model seems to be news organizations that use content generated by others to build their own brand without attribution or sometimes even paying the creators.
Huffington Puffington is the big one that comes to mind but there are others and these are supposedly liberal outlets.
Hal
What in he’ll. So Eric Harris wasn’t even shot by a real cop?
replicnt6
@Villago Delenda Est:
If that was a typo, it ought to be a thing. If it’s already a thing, well, never mind.
Valdivia
@Amir Khalid:
:) I liked the graphic double-entendre!
Violet
@Amir Khalid: I think 538 has lost their minds with thinking Rubio has a chance at the nomination. There’s no way. I’m hoping he just does some damage to Jeb! in Florida, that’s all.
Valdivia
the drenched in starburst article about Rubio at buzzfeed is an instant classic. By same guy who was on Romney beat in 2012.
ETA: @Violet: I saw another article at a liberal site saying that he was a great second choice because if he could fool voters about his policies he seems like a great candidate. Wut?
scav
ooooo, we stand enough people casting leadership shadows in a circular meeting on the right morning (we can lure them with doughnuts) we could construct a Leadershiphenge and use the synergy so created to predict future earnings.

@Hal: The whole story is sickening. As they all are. I keep hoping we will pull our collective heads out of our asses in this country and acknowledge the occupation by law enforcement. And how it isn’t exactly safe for the occupied population.
Of course, when middle class white folks start getting killed at the same rate people of color and those with brain disorders die, things will change. Is it too much to ask that we try to change things before that?
Mustang Bobby
I see Nate’s gotten a lot more street since he went to ESPN. He must now be getting down with his bad self.

Vox articles show up a lot on Yahoo. I bit the clickbait once and my Adblock was sweating bullets (it was already taxed by fending off the Yahoo page).

Our own SouthernBeale had a great, thoughtful analysis of this story earlier today (clothed in a righteous rant).

@Hal: The fact that dorky wealthy cop wannabes can pay to play sheriff—”Please, let me tase him! Let me!”—is appalling. Jesus god, the corruption. Add the deputy who told a dying (at his “colleague’s” inept hands) man to “Fuck his breath” and the whole story makes me so mad I start shaking every time I see a reference to it.

Rubio’s vanity campaign looks to have a life expectancy of about six weeks before getting buried by JEB!

Hmm. Yglesias’s piece opens (with links both to the site and the article):
It does, below, reprint the graphic but it’s hard not to read Silver’s complaint as him being butthurt about criticism, since Yglesias basically says his own chart shows he’s full of shit. In that context, I think it’s fine to print the chart, so long as you attribute it, which he did.
Amir Khalid
@Hal:
The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office classified a 73-year-old man as capable of doing a full-time deputy’s job. Does it employ 73-year-old deputies? Would it?
Robert Bates is a rich insurance man who has donated thousands of dollars worth of weapons and vehicles to the TCSO, and US$2,500 to the current Sheriff’s reelection campaign. It appears from the story that TCSO commonly appoints rich people as deputies and they give it donations of cop gear. I really, really hope there is no connection between Mister Bates’ appointment and his donations.
SiubhanDuinne
@Amir Khalid:
Hahaha. You are a very droll man.
Mike J
@pete: The voxmaps twitter feed prints the graphic with no attribution, just a link to Vox.com. The “story” there is generally a paragraph, the graphic, and a link to the source.
scav
Should this go out with or without attribution to original in this thread? Leadershiphenge says cloudy, uncertain.

Meanwhile Wikileaks is accusing Hillary Clinton of stealing their red arrow or something.

@Violet:
Rubio seems like a total joke candidate. I think Cruz has more of a chance than Rubio but the media is sure taking Rubio more seriously.
Roger Moore
@Violet:
They’re trying to use a data-driven model, but as far as I can tell they don’t have nearly the quality of data they do with their polling aggregation. They still feel like they need to say something about the election, so they’re coming up with excuses to play the horse race.
Violet
@askew: I think Rubio’s going to be eaten alive by Cruz. They can both play the Cuba card and Rubio looks like a baby while Cruz plays True Believer much more convincingly. I think Walker will make a clumsy attempt to send in some goons to kneecap them first. That would have been Christie’s role but he’s a laughingstock now.
@Roger Moore: Yeah, I think it’s all bout the horse race. They don’t play that game, they don’t get clicks, they don’t get ads and they don’t stay afloat.
RSA
@Roger Moore:
I got this same impression reading 538’s take that Clinton winning the next election is a 50/50 proposition. Not because I strongly disagree, but because the data require so much interpretation at this point to make that argument.
EriktheRed
One of the developments in GoT which a brought a smile to me face is seeing Sansa’s bratty mama’s-boy cousin Robin sent off to military school (or at least their version of it). I know it’s not really his fault, but that kid definitely needed a smack upside the head.

Mmmm. Cuban food.

@Ripley: That was funny. I don’t think I’ll ever order the Wednesday special again – “the cuban” – without laughing.

A lot of ppl on here probably like Vox because they’re sufficiently liberal. But they are garbage journalism. They rarely produce any kind of original reporting, rarely interview, and rarely do any of their own deep analysis. Silver is right to call them on their bullshit.

Vox is/has been guilty as charged. I used this post as an assignment, and was pleased that my students asked about the lack of attribution, but they’ve gone back and added in links:

Mostly wikipedia FWIW.
