Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Second rate reporter says what?

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Republicans in disarray!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

I don’t recall signing up for living in a dystopian sci-fi novel.

Republicans do not trust women.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Nerd Prom/NHL Open Thread

I’m watching the Pens get systematically dismantled by the Rangers, so I won’t be watching. I’ll catch POTUS and Cecily Strong on youtube later. I hate the whole concept, but at the same time, I think Obama is normally pretty funny.

Gonna really go out on a limb and predict President Obama won’t be making any drone strike jokes this year.

*** Update ***

The nerd prom is tomorrow. I’m not really on top of things with the Pens facing elimination.

Heard John Oliver on Terry Gross yesterday ( a replay from one some months ago) and when asked about things like the Correspondents Dinner, his response (and I paraphrase) was that there was really something unseemly about reporters and politicians being chummy with each other. That the both of them should be wary of each other and a certain amount of tension ought to be in the air whenever they’re in the same room. He remarked that the only folks that reporters should be friendly with are their families and other reporters. Said the same thing about comedians. He’s right.

I adopted a kitten/cat (kind of borderline) this week. I was afraid my younger dog would have a prey issue, but her maternal side came out instead. It was remarkable, I have never seen crazy Gracie so calm and sweet. Then the big dog barked at the kitty and Gracie ran him off, unnecessarily protecting the wee one.

@Omnes Omnibus: I believe you may be right.

I also remember seeing a Brian Lamb C Span interview with a young female journalist whose name I forget. It was probably 8 or 10 years ago when he had that regular Sunday night interview series. She had the same view of the role of journalists in their relationships with the powerful and privileged. What stood out to me was how critical and almost disrespectful of her he came across when she asserted those opinions. She also proffered that it wasn’t good for journalists to become more famous than those they covered. I wish I remembered her name and I still remember how almost cavalier with her Lamb was in that interview. She didn’t take offense, although I would have.
