Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

No one could have predicted…

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

This fight is for everything.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

The lights are all blinking red.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

Pelosi: “He either is stupid, or he thinks the rest of us are.” Why not both?

Let me file that under fuck it.

Everybody saw this coming.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Gotta see “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Amazingly, the masculinist lunatic fringe is having problems with the movie:

Men’s Rights Activists have called for a boycott of Mad Max: Fury Road, describing it as “feminist propaganda” and bemoaning liberal Hollywood’s attempt to undermine traditional masculinity.

The film, which stars Charlize Theron as bald-headed warrior Furiosa alongside Tom Hardy’s Mad Max, has been criticised because Theron appears to have more lines and screentime than Hardy.

Aaron Clarey, a blogger on Return of Kings website which focuses on men’s issues, wrote that he was initially excited at the “explosions, fire tornadoes [and] symphonic score of Fury Road,” because it “looked like a straight-up guy flick.

One day, this goober might discover that girls do not have cooties.

    @Brachiator:

It’s almost like Charlize Theron is a bankable movie star and Tom Hardy is a relative unknown. Nah, that couldn’t be it — Hardy has a peni$ and so therefore is clearly Theron’s superior in every way.

And it still looks more like a remake of “The Road Warrior” to me, which has not only a strong woman warrior, but a couple of gay male ones as well.

The WaPost just put up an op ed by by Florida gyrocopter pilot/corruption protestor Doug Hughes. He’s being arraigned in federal court soon.

I flew a gyrocopter onto the Capitol Lawn to save our democracy Not lengthy, with lots of good links.

… A poll by the Global Strategy Group indicates that 91 percent of Americans see the corrosive influence of money in our political system as a problem that demands attention. And in a Gallup tracking poll, voters identified frustration with government as their No. 1 concern in recent months, ahead of the economy and jobs.

Evidence of what those polls mean is quietly emerging around the country five years after the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. Tens of thousands of Americans have protested, marched, written their elected representatives and local media, and quietly built a movement. Sixteen states and 650 cities have called on Congress to propose a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United.

…. It’s appropriate that we spend billions protecting the United States from terrorists. It’s time for Americans to spend time protecting democracy from plutocrats.

… I have faith in a jury of my peers and will accept whatever consequence I must. I simply hope by putting my freedom on the line, others might realize how precious their freedom is and join those of us engaged in this fight to preserve and protect our government of, by and for the people.

@Brachiator: I’m an opera fan. We routinely suspend disbelief higher than Mount Everest, since the limited number of people who can sing the part rarely look the part. So, while I think the man-with-tits trope is overused in these action movies, I also think it’s silly to let it ruin the movie for you. You want realistic fights, call the nearest full-contact dojo and ask them if you can observe class one session.

It is a deliberate retelling of Road Warrior by the original director, George Miller.

And I recall that the first movie not only had a compelling female character, but they went out of their way to avoid any conventional love scene between this character and Max. In fact, she ended up getting killed. And Max did not shed a tear.

Well, that’s some poor juxtaposition. What is there to say, but we love guns more than we love kids.

I think I am nearly done with pitch bible 1. And, after giving it a long think, I am losing out to people with better gear. I’m going to have to sell my camera kit and maybe my laptop and get a nikon, hopefully with a lens so I’m not out of commission entirely. Plus side, people do like my set photos. Minus, I can see the difference between that and the nikon because of some of the softness and color balance issues. Throw in the other fact that if I want to do camera work, I have to earn my way up to a Canon 7D. If I had one of those, I get to assistant camera just because I have the fricking holy grail right on my hip. I can’t do that with people snapping up the photo work because they have a Nikon. These brand wars are annoying.

@Brachiator: These guys are idiots and this sounded like my kind of movie. If I can wrap up all my writing this weekend, I know where I’ll be on Sunday after working out.

Maggie Haberman manages to make the NY Times look even sillier than it already does:

“The writers at The Nation, one of the foremost liberal media outlets in the country and a driving force behind Bill de Blasio’s rise in the 2013 mayoral primary in New York City, have been open about their desire to see a challenge from the left to Hillary Rodham Clinton in 2016.

So it was eye-catching when an email went out from the magazine on Friday afternoon that heaped praise on “Clinton Cash,” the book by Peter Schweizer that Mrs. Clinton’s team has worked to portray as an error-filled hatchet job. The email was actually a paid advertisement, as a disclaimer made clear at the bottom, but it was still provocative…”.

No, Maggie, it was not provocative. It’s called advertising revenue, and it keeps the Nation’s ship afloat.

I’m well aware of Egan’s work which is why I mentioned him. Liberals care a lot about the importance of diversity in newsrooms when it comes to race and gender, but regional diversity should be a concern as well for a paper that shapes national political and cultural opinion. It would be nice if a few of these intellectuals had spent some time living in the west absorbing its unique rhythms and sensibilities. Guys like Brooks could do with a little less Burke and Niebuhr and a lot more Stegner and Doig. Timothy Egan could bring that sensibility to the Times.

As I type, a huge column behind the center field wall in Cincinnatti is on fire even as the Giants-Reds game is ongoing. The FD has ladder trucks on hand, but they don’t appear to reach far enough… and it’s a big, big blaze.

Update: Move along folks, it’s all over now, nothing to see, move along…

University Looking Into Claim Black Student Waiting For Adviser Was ‘Harassing’ Her

…The university said a formal complaint had been opened after student Kevin Bruce was told to leave the reception area of the WellStar College of Health and Human Services advising center while trying to get an appointment with his adviser, the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper reported on Thursday.

The response from the school comes after a video Bruce took of the exchange went viral and prompted the hashtag #ItsBiggerThanKSU to describe instances of racial discrimination.

Below, is Bruce’s video, which he posted to Twitter on Wednesday.
In the video, a reported staff member approaches Bruce and accuses him of harassing “Mrs. Tilley,” which Bruce denies.

“Sitting here until somebody’s available is harassing them,” she says. “It is. Would you like me to call campus security? I will go do that.”

The staff member then leaves and the video ends. While Bruce said he didn’t believe racism was the impetus behind the accusation, the incident prompted a dialogue on social media about discrimination, Raw Story reported.

Bruce also posted a detailed explanation about the incident to Twitter in which he identified the woman and other advisers…

@SRW1: Don’t you love the “with all due respect” addition? I always read that as “I have no respect for your opinion” and it makes me laugh. My sister’s ex always used that phrase, and he was a master of fake politeness.

@Roger Moore: I have a Sony, my little angel from above. The Nikon 5300 is frankly, higher MP and just is crisper. The Canon 7D is amazing as a dslr for filming, which is what the pilot I worked on was shot on. It looks so high end. As it should, since the Canon 7D is about 2k, which is why those that can buy one for themselves get to work on films just because they have the actual filming camera.

    @ruemara:

I was all over Nikon, until I read reviews about the Panasonic Lumix with a Leica lens. f2.8/ 4.5-108mm – I just ordered it and took it on a trip to see the 30-K y.o cave paintings in Spain and France. Somewhere else it says 25-600mm, on the barrel… the 4.5-108 is around the edge of the front of the lens. Maybe the

I learned that in the dark you could just hold the shutter release down and it would expose over and over, and stack all those exposures up as a single shot, like a well lit area instead of available darkness. I hope I can repeat that, because I didn’t know any thing about it, and suddenly I was taking pictures in the dark that were properly exposed looking.

I also shot a “film” of a friend who has a hand-build sawmill cutting lumber on his farm. The technology is about 1907 vintage, iron levers and gears, except for the 3-cyl Detroit Diesel engine that runs the major works of the mill.

I was way too jumpy, but it was my first stab at moving pictures since the mid 1970s using giant video equipment, RCA cameras on tripods that took three trips to carry the parts to the scene. Now using a 1 pound camera instead of a 270 pound camera body and lens the size of an astronomical instrument, well, I’m learning new things.

Anyway, it’s fun to learn a new tool. I used to use a 4×5 sheet film camera for commercial advertising shots… now I’m using a digital device as if it was from Mars!

But I’ve never handled a Canon camera of any sort… would be interesting, but I know so much about Nikon and how they do things. And I use the Panasonic/Lieca without knowing a damm thing about it, really. Go figure.

Good luck, Ruemara! Sounds like you’re doing real pro work, so hang in there and keep up the working hard. That always worked well for me, just keep your head down, work hard, and make the boss look good.

    Ok then:

On Wednesday, 242 members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to outlaw abortions taking place after 20 weeks gestation. Among them, Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-TN), who has defended his ex-wife having two abortions, and who pressured one of his mistresses to have an abortion after she told him she was pregnant.

“Congressman DesJarlais was proud to vote in favor” of the 20 week abortion ban in Congress this week, Robert Jameson, a spokesperson for the member of Congress, tells the Chattanooga Times Free Press. DesJarlais, a respected physician from Jasper, “has always advocated for pro-life values,” Jameson adds.

But he is 100% pro life. As long as it’s not his mistress or wife, or I guess anyone he’s in a relationship with who gets pregnant.

Meanwhile, DesJarlais’s website asserts that, “all life should be cherished and protected. [DesJarlais] has received a 100% score by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the oldest and the largest national pro-life organization in the United States.”
