In tragically congruent news, Fox reports that second-gen Quiverfull ‘patriarch’ Josh Duggar has resigned from the Family Research Council.

    Yeesh.

Jim Bob told police in 2006 that when Josh returned home in 2003, Jim Bob, accompanied by some of his church elders, took Josh to Arkansas State Trooper, Jim Hutchens. Jim Bob knew Hutchens personally. Hutchens did not take any official action and instead gave Josh a “very stern talk.” As In Touch magazine reports exclusively in this week’s issue, Hutchens is now serving 56-years in prison for child pornography. He took no action on the Duggar case.

Good lord, these people are irritating.

In other news, I submitted an application to adopt a friend for Iggy, which was approved this evening. I thought there’d be a home visit, but evidently not.

I can pick her up tomorrow, but I’ve emailed the foster to see about bringing Iggy to meet her tomorrow before we go ahead. I hope it all works out. Funny, I keep hearing horror stories about impossible rescue groups that don’t adopt to anyone; both of my rescue experiences have been the opposite. “You want a dog? Here you go!” Whoa, hang on, don’t you want to check– “Nope! Have a dog!” Don’t I need to get– “Take the goddamn dog!”

Anyway. Scroll down to see Sandy.

yeah…I guess the lives of his victim were just…meh?

Oh and I’m finding it interesting how media are headling Duggar’s “response” against allegations…not mentioning that in his “response” he basically ADMITTED the allegations are true.

So that no longer makes them “allegations”, amirite?

Oh and the defenders are trying to claim “youthful discovery”…notice the police report said the some of “allegations” were FELONY level allegations…so yeah, not just “flashing ur junk” to some random crazy cousin

@Karen in GA: Aw, she’s cute. Iggy and Sandy together is getting into cute overload territory. Much luck with the doggies liking each other.

The young woman (Cassie) who has the no-kill shelter in CT has taken on two cats who are bonded. They are about 5 years old. She wants to rehome them together. The background story is a tearjerker: A day or two ago, Cassie was asked to talk with a patient at the hospital where she works. (Cassie is a respiration therapist.) She went to see the patient, who was very concerned about what would happen to his two cats. The medical staff expected him to be going to a rehab facility. Cassie assured him that she would take the two cats and promised him she would find a home for them together — she would not split them up. Well, he passed away overnight after speaking with Cassie. The medical staff really thought he’d be going into rehab. Apparently, once he was no longer worried about the cats, he could let go.

So in 2002 when Duggar was 14, the age of his sisters ranged from 4-12. Police report was 2006, when he was 17, he was 14, 5 girls, some of which were his sisters.

Again, aged 4-12. So again I ask is there an age of the victims where the “youthful indiscretion” defenders WON’T defend?

I see some RWNJ trying to compare both Mike Brown’s juvie records and that Lena Dunham book excerpt…all to try to defend this piece of shit and his piece of shit parents.

Being an immigrant from a culture where people stand closer than they do here, and might often touch each other on the arm while in conversation I had to learn that personal space here is very different and if you don’t respect it people misinterpret it. But that is very different than simply sauntering over to someone in public and giving them a massage just because. Unseemly is a perfect word for it.

A funny story: A couple of years ago I went on a horrible blind date with a Federalist who was also a raging neocon (I was set up by a family friend). Aside from everything that was going wrong I, totally by accident touched his arm with my hand and he jumped out of his chair with a look of horror. As totally uninterested as I was it was kind of shocking to see his reaction. Also, I was tempted to say: slow down buddy if I had meant to touch you, you would have known.

@PurpleGirl: In doing some research online for family stuff I stumbled onto some Reno newspapers that mentioned the doings of my great grandmother’s brother, who owned a hotel there. Most of the mentions were ads for his hotel, a notice that he had sold the place, a notice when he took it back from the buyers, his name on a list of mining claims that had not paid their annual fees, and then his son started to appear in stories. The articles included a robbery by “Indians” while the son was managing on night shift, several drunk and disorderly arrests of this son, (there were other sons but their shenanigans didn’t make the paper), fights in public with his wife, etc.

Then one day Jr ran off with $1500 from the hotel safe and got about 10 miles out of town before they caught his carriage, and there was a big article about all of the fuss, but the best part of the article was the editorializing about how they had had such great hopes for this young man and that they hoped this was just a youthful indiscretion, the youth in question being 45 years old.

Not a weird segue at all, it’s exactly what I meant. Flirting & attraction is a subtle dance but one hopes not so subtle that the other person wouldn’t know it’s happening. This guy had no clue, in life as in politics.

According to TMZ, police investigated starting in 2006 when they received an email from Harpo, Oprah’s company. Harpo had gotten an anonymous email about the alleged molestation before the Duggars were set to appear on her show.

Police wanted to question Josh, who was still a minor at the time, but Jim Bob declined.

Josh cannot be charged because of the statute of limitations.

In this case, nothing. Nothing goes through his mind. He can do anything he wants, so he does without thinking about it. Presumably there’s a trail of women subjected to much worse, and he never thought it was an issue.

That, or the other option is he’s a sexual abuse survivor himself, and has wildly messed up ideas about what ‘casual affection’ means. Heck, could be both.

As for the Duggars, assume that all men and most women in Quiverfull are abusers. Quiverfull is abuse. When there’s extra layers on top, who’s surprised?

    @lamh36:
The media are mostly old white rich men who’ve demonstrated clearly they’re ‘moderate’ Republicans. They don’t give a rat’s ass about the problems of anyone but old white rich men. They probably even sympathize with treating women as objects. They just don’t feel the need to go out of their way to make it a public political issue, either.

Speaking personally, I had real problems with this when I was a young man, in part because I’d been, in hindsight, repeatedly sexually harassed in junior high school by mean girls who used unwanted ironic flirtation as a way of belittling dorky boys. It made me extremely wary of anything that looked like a sign of actual attraction. Took me years to get over.

@Matt McIrvin: For me it was sales and marketing, and sex-appeal/flirtation used so freely in advertising and TV and the like. To this day, whenever an attractive woman flirts with me, I’m unable to accept that she might be actually attracted to me, instead I immediately wonder what she’s trying to sell me. Of course, 99% of the time she probably is trying to sell me something, but there have been cases where I found out way too late that, no, she really was trying to flirt with me. I call this “the waitress factor”: no dude, she doesn’t want you, just just wants a nice tip.

This is an interesting little nasty side-effect of patriarchy: a structural power imbalance can make meaningful connection between people and even sometimes communication impossible.
