Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

No one could have predicted…

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Second rate reporter says what?

The willow is too close to the house.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

Second race night of the season last night. Last week, I took one of the standard old club boats and won in light winds. This week, I got one of the high tech speedsters and 10mph winds, along with a beginner off the dock for crew. Unbeknownst to me, the beginner was an experienced sailor who was only new to us. We won all three races, the closest one by five lengths (against another of the fast boats).

They compared themselves to Jesus Christ. Apparently Jesus Christ was sheparding 100 sheep and one went astray. And Jesus tried to help the one who went astray. Or something.

They say all their children received counseling from “certified professional counselors” But Megyn Kelly did not ask “certified by whom?”

    @efgoldman:
In the US too: From the Maine Wabanaki-State Child Welfare Truth and Reconciliation Commission

“The most critical finding is that native children continue to be removed from their homes at a disproportionate rate through 2014. …It is not at the same rate as it was in, say, 1972, where, in Aroostook County, one in three native children were in care, which is a stunning statistic and represents a gross over-representation of native children in a foster care system…The current rate of native children being placed in foster care is still about five times higher than that of non-native children. And this is happening despite education and training of workers in the child welfare system about the need to protect native children and their Wabanaki culture. Institutional racism is still playing a part in our state and in our institutions and in the public.”

“We’ve learned a lot through this process – the level of mistrust that tribal people have had for the TRC because it has anything to do with the state,” says Esther Attean, a member of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and co-director of Wabanaki REACH. Attean says many tribal people were fearful of reliving traumatic experiences in foster care, of being exploited and having thier experiences made public. Attean says one of the commission’s recommendations is to respect tribal sovereignty. “To respect tribal sovereignty – just those three words – that is huge. That is huge for us,” she says. “But it also brings with it a lot of anxiety. It’s really at the heart of tribal-state relations.”

Though, wouldn’t you know it, Gov. Paul LePage rescinded an executive order he had signed.

“He said he was going to rescind the executive order and withdraw support for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and he was going to send the National Guard after us to force adherence to state (fishing) law,” Moore said. “Now we’re waiting for him to turn away from the TRC and deploy the National Guard.”

“It’s like our spirituality: He can’t take it away. He can’t take sovereignty away. It’s not relevant,” Attean says. “But it’s sad because it speaks volumes about the attitudes he has towards tribal people – the audacity to think that he can write an executive order that’s going to change or impact Wabanaki people.”

Dead thread, I know, but that’s what I get for working nights. I am a decades-long Detroit Red Wings fan. Loooove Steve Yzerman and I’m really impressed with what he’s done as the Tampa Bay GM. Plus, as a Red Wings fan, I have no love whatsoever for the Blackhawks. However…..
I got a satellite radio about a month ago, so I could listen to the NHL and NBA playoffs while I work (I do a lot of work out of my car) and I. CAN. NOT. STAND that screaming asshole who does the radio play-by-play for Tampa Bay. This guy was screaming his lungs out over a FIRST ROUND VICTORY. And not even the clinching victory. Their second fucking win of the whole goddamn playoff run. “Act like you’ve been there before” applies to the broadcasting people too. Between that and his incessant whining about fouls that aren’t called in favor of the Lightning (hey buddy: hockey refs call very few penalties in the playoffs), I would have sworn that this moron had never seen a hockey game before this season, but NOOO! This asshole was on the job when the Bolts won the Cup 11 years ago! He HAS been there before. He has no excuse for screaming like he’s being dismembered over every. fucking, victory. Fuck that guy and fuck the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Plus, what Chicago did tonight is pretty much what they’ve been doing the whole post-season. One goal, two goal, three goal lead? Doesn’t matter. They’re still gonna kill you in the third period. It’s just what they do.
    Sorry, Betty.
ETA: I listened to the Chicago broadcast for the entire game, right until the very end when I switched over to the Tampa Bay feed just so I could listen to that asshole have to announce a Blackhawks win. Fuck that guy.

@SixStringFanatic: The NBC announcer was almost as bad in Round 2. Rabidly partisan. Embarrassing to hear him gush about Stamkos. Okay, a Canadian team versus an American team—but c’mon, have a little class, man. It’s about hockey first.
