Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Dead end MAGA boomers crying about Talyor Swift being a Dem is my kind of music. Turn it up.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

The willow is too close to the house.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Israel is using food as a weapon of war. Unforgivable.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” is supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The gop couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Here’s a “God of Death” figure from South America:

I saw it in a museum last week. Creeped me right the fuck out.

Has anyone ever made sticky toffee pudding? If so, got a recipe to share?

I’d never heard of it until about a week ago, but a friend who doesn’t cook is homesick for it. I found lots of recipes online, but it’s always good to have a personal rec.

@NotMax: I have an onyx tiki ashtray that my dad bought as a present for his mom one birthday. It looks a bit like a small altar for a still beating heart. It was something I remembered from my childhood and I could bear it going into the trash or being sold at auction for 25 cents.

I haven’t heard of sticky toffee pudding, but if you’re looking for sticky date pudding, this recipe is quite good, but you need to add 1 tsp of vanilla extract to pudding and 1/2 tsp to the sauce. http://www.foodtolove.com.au/recipes/sticky-date-pudding-4773

    @Omnes Omnibus:

I was out and about a lot on Thursday, then after the horror of the haircut I made the mistake of napping conking out from about 6:00 to 10:00. So I’m wide awake now but am looking at needing to be up for pre-trip prep about 6:30 or 7:00 at the very latest. Should go to bed in 15 minutes or so, but my will is weak.

(Research says, and my experience has confirmed it for me, that sleep periods that are multiples of the 90-minute sleep cycle are the best. So, theoretically, you will feel better—more alert—after, say, six hours of sleep than after seven hours. If I go to bed around 2:00 or 2:15 I’ll be primed for wakeup at 6:30-6:45. Allegedly.)

Let’s pith that scary God of Death! Steeplejack, where’s your obsidian knife? Omnes, can you get a pot of water for the altar? Oh, and I’ll grab the fire starter.

The Boston Blackie films are goofy larks. Flimsy, as you say. Heck, the plot progression of any of them is readily interchangeable with any other, just the names change. Wasn’t a great leap for Chester Morris, who had portrayed Blackie on radio, to make the films.

The Falcon was a barely disguised extension of The Saint. There is a resemblance, but the voice of George Sanders’ brother, Tom Conway, who took over the Falcon role, is nearly identical.

Many horrible things happen every day on this planet, but few are as heartbreaking as this:

Izabel Laxamana, a 13-year-old girl in Tacoma, Washington died by suicide after jumping off a highway overpass on Friday, May 29. Days before, Laxamana’s father Jeff had reportedly punished her for an unspecified transgression by cutting off her hair and uploading a video to YouTube.

Not only was she beautiful, but she seemed well-liked (based on all the flowers and stuff at the memorial). I hope they can charge the father with something, SOMETHING. The fucker needs to be in prison to cool his heels for a decade or two.

Good job, GOP. You managed to disenfranchise a few thousand voters through your voter ID efforts, and in retaliation, thanks to Dems in Oregon paving a path, California is rushing ahead to automatically add 6 million registered voters in the bluest state in the nation. Go suck on it.

And yes, the wingnut freakout is already happening.

Granted, licenses to undocumented immigrants are very clearly labeled, and because the registration is automatic and doesn’t rely on some clerk data-entering on paper, the likelihood that an undocumented licensee would get registered is vastly less, but you know, brown people:

Last year, alarmed secretaries of state from Ohio and Kansas warned that with illegals having access to the same documents citizens have, there is no way they can verify whether or not an applicant registering to vote is even eligible.

Apparently officials in Ohio and Kansas cannot read the notice on the front of the license.

    June 5, 2015 at 3:58 am

    @? Martin:

Alas, adding to the number of registered voters in California does nothing to change the electoral balance of power, since CA is already a deep blue state. Adding registered voters to deep red states like Tennessee or Mississippi or Alabama would make a difference.

But, of course, those kinds of deep red states are exactly where the GOP’s disenfranchisement efforts are concentrated.

After this noir stimulation I thought I’d look for Advise and Consent on Youtube. Someone is offering the movie but you have to verify your age because of the ‘content.’ Is that some kind of trick? Obv age isn’t an issue for this movie, so.

Anyway here’s the trailerfor it, which is good in itself. (For some subliminal reason I alway found Betty White to be suggestive of noir undertones, but I don’t know if she was in any ‘true’ noirs.)

Now I’m thirsty for available noir before dawn breaks. Any recommendations for a real good one on Yt, Netfl or Hulu? (Got no cable.)
