We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Let there be snark.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Let’s go Bolts!

Non-sporting folk, please treat this as an open thread. I’ve been in the woods all day, but it looks like we’ve been extra sporty.

Did I miss anything in the news?

Lots of cheering and tears at Churchill Downs today, a delightfully mixed crowd, young, middle aged and old. All economic strata, all races, all genders.

Among race fans, this is a big f’ing deal – thoroughbred racing needed this attention, and the story is VERY positive.

I only cashed one cheap exacta ticket, but was in the hunt for all of my combo bets and had a blast. Dad wore his lucky shirt and press pass from the 1977 Belmont (Seattle Slew). He attended with his brother, a nationally prominent turf writer.

@Botsplainer: I totally love that he won the triple crown, it has been so long. I was 10 when I was mesmerized by Big Red and then saw the other great runs in the seventies, I often wondered if Visa cursed it because the year after Affirmed won it they started their million dollar bonus.

Regarding the horsies, I actually called it — won a bet with hubby that American Pharoah would win. He (hubby, not American Pharoah) has to make me a fancy breakfast — woohoo!

Thank GOD the Bolts are gonna make this a series.

Good thing Lightning can win on the road these playoffs.

    Still, gotta worry about Bishop.

Late to the thread, because I was at beautiful Belmont Park today, watching American Pharoah win the Triple Crown. Holy cow, the noise of the crowd was unbelievable. Just this roar of joy that went on and on. Really cool.

I fell in love with horse racing in 1989, when I got caught up in the Sunday Silence- Easy Goer rivalry, and have been waiting for a Triple Crown since. At last. And Pharoah did it with authority.

And the Goo Goo Dolls played a set on the track after. I freely admit I’m a sucker for “Iris.”

@efgoldman: I don’t know about that — Tampa is a road team. If Bishop is out, that may be a factor.

@Nicole: So cool that you were there!

    @efgoldman:

The way both teams play, makes more sense to prepare for a full seven.

Lightning can win on the road in hostile places. SEE Game 7 vs. the Rangers.

It all depends on if Bishop is out with injury.

Missed watching the game as I was with SWMBO attending her HS reunion – was following NHL.com instead. And yes, Tampa has been strong on the road this year, so I suspect the series is going to at least six. Going to miss Monday’s game as well – we’ll be on the first day of a 1200 mile drive back home .

Wednesday? I’ll be glued to the TV.
