Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Books are my comfort food!

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

The arc of the moral universe doesn’t bend itself. it’s up to us.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself. We’re allowed to grow past that.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Maybe you would prefer that we take Joelle’s side in ALL CAPS?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

I find it confusing that the Norwegian ladies play in the German jerseys. Maybe that’s why they went 1-0 down.

I’d be fairly surprised if Germany don’t win comfortably. I’d even go so far as to call them the likely winners of the tournament.

That huge ferry in the the small harbour is impressive. I have a time-lapse of the Stockholm ferries arriving in Turku harbour (Finland). The two ferries arrive within half an hour and one of them has to do a 180 before it can dock. It’s interesting in real time, but in time-lapse it looks amazing.

@SRW1: The propulsion/steering systems are so improved now. They can go all directions in a flash.

The Voith Schneider propeller (VSP), also known as a cycloidal drive is a specialized marine propulsion system (MPS). It is highly maneuverable, being able to change the direction of its thrust almost instantaneously. It is widely used on tugs and ferries.

It’s been fascinating to see how this game has swung around. Germany looked as if they were romping away with it in the first half, but in the second half they look short of ideas and Norway are finishing stronger.

    June 11, 2015 at 5:51 pm

    @Valdivia:

I was about to say that I actually saw Shocking Blue in concert in about 1971 or so, but I realized that I was confusing them with Frijid Pink, another one-hit group that did a sort of psychedelic cover of “House of the Rising Sun.” I had no interest in them, but they opened for Roger McGuinn (formerly of the Byrds), so there you go. I don’t remember a single other thing about them—Frijid Pink or Shocking Blue. (Okay, I think Shocking Blue was Dutch or something.)

This has been another episode of “Faulty Music Memories.”

ETA: Damn, they make that song even more interminable than the Animals’ version. At least with that one I can hang on for Alan Price’s great organ solo. (Video edited to put you right on it.)
