A geographical quirk has the games occurring at the same time.

Can As Canarinhas improve on their lackluster, albeit victorious start or will Las Soñadores fulfill their dream?

Can La Tri beat the Three Lionesses?

    So there is no way Colombia wins if the missed call is made? I assume all these experts know of what they speak?

    Hm, can’t watch that game (Eng -Mex), but with the result of the France – Columbia game the three lionesses will have a hard time to progress if they don’t win today.

    If England snooker themselves out of a spot in the next round, my suspicion will be confirmed: that is the men’s team playing in drag.

    Do most of these women make a living at this?

    @raven:

    Some of them do, but nowhere near to what their male counterparts make. I have seen a report in a German newspaper that the highest earner in the German team is on about €100k (including endorsements).

    @Amir Khalid: I know you are not English, Amir.

    However, your remark is so English that it has already been eliminated in the first knockout round.

    That does not surprise me. Most of them probably did so while on a scholarship. They get a degree out of it and they are where a professional league might take hold.

    What are the expectations for the Brazilian team in Brazil? One of the six or seven that might win it, or higher?

    Neither team has impressed me. Indeed, whoever gets out of this group and I think Brazil will win it, probably won’t last past the round of 16.

    @SRW1: Missed your comment earlier. Based on what I’ve seen, there is more support for the US team in the US than for the Brazilian team in Brazil. IMHO, interest in the women’s game in general is faint.

    During the WC last year, streets were empty and banks closed at noon when Brazil was playing. I’m certain that there will be a lot of bandwagon hopping if they move through the ranks, but interest otherwise is weak.

    Well, Santos did fold their women’s team so they could keep Némar for one more year. Most of the Europeans are pro: Fischer from Sweden had a high-profile transfer from her domestic club to Frankfurt after the Euro tournament. The announcer noted that most of the Columbia team have jobs (the one she mentioned worked at a newspaper full-time). So it seems even the women become jaded after the long club season (Lyon won the Champion’s League this year.) And I must say, the Brazilians play just like the boys: fall down a lot, and whine to the Ref.
