Banner day for dog ownership around here. Thurston chewed through my headset earphones in several places, so even though they can be spliced and fixed, I have to sit very still because I have about 6 inches of spare cable left to maneuver. Then, went to the big city, stopped at Wendy’s for a diet coke, and the lady at the drive thru gave Lily a chicken nugget because she was so cute. Lily gulped it down and then threw up on my crotch halfway home. I had to sit with vomit on my lap for 10 minutes because I could only move once or it would be everywhere, and that had to be a coordinated movement out of the car to where cleaning supplies were. I managed to hold back my gag reflex and not wreck while a puddle of warm, wet, viscous, and smelly dog barf seeped through my shorts onto my private parts. WINNING!
So, any recommendations on a nice gaming headset that will work with an ASUS XONAR ESSENCE soundcard. Have optical and RCA inputs.

So was Lily being thoughtful (by allowing you a way to keep it out of the car) or disgusting (by picking the grossest place to barf)? Amazing self-control on your part! Most people would probably have wrecked when the barfing started.

I like how the person who set up the shrine left a bone for Ghost.

John, your junk was all warm from a little lady-action, and being it was your dog Lily, she knew how to keep it real, doggy-wise, and not let it get weird. Plus she probably made gagging sounds, so bonus points for a little verisimilitude….

Okay, the little shrine is pretty darn funny. I’m never forgiving them for Shireen–one line they really didn’t need to cross (so very many crossed lines).

I seriously thought the byline said Ann Laurie and I wondered when she started watching GoT and wandering the city. Possibly, I’m a little fogged.

My maiden name, which I still use all the time ’cause now I’m a three-namer, is Snow. So I am taking Jon’s death kind of hard—I feel like I lost my brother, man.
But I don’t think he’s permanently dead.

It’ll all be settled at the end of the final episode when the camera pulls further and further back, a la St. Elsewhere, revealing a young dragon playing with a snow globe.

Well, you know what they say: when George R.R. Martin closes a window, he slams it on your foreskin, obliging you to circumcize yourself with a rusty bayonet to free yourself, following which you stagger backwards towards the door to the cellar stairs, which he opens for you….
EriktheRed
There’s speculation that Jon Snow isn’t really dead, btw.

I’ve got your puke story beat: I was driving home through Louisiana last night, and about 50 feet up the Lake Charles bridge (by their casinos), traffic stopped. Completely. For 2+ hours. There was some 3 vehicle wreck involving an overturned 18-wheeler, and they couldn’t get a wrecker to it, and due to the location and poor road design, there were hundreds of people out of there cars on a humid summer evening for two hours.
And this is actually my 2nd travel fiasco…I got stranded in the middle of nowhere Arkansas for a day on Memorial Day when my flight circled its destination city for an hour before turning back to refuel. Back in the middle of nowhere Arkansas.
My nerves are SHOT!

@Suzanne: Martin reviving characters has gotten to be a bad joke.
Robert Sneddon
@Valdivia: The trade publications say the actor playing Jon Snow isn’t getting his contract renewed. It *might* be they’re going to revive him in a new body a la Doctor Who but I wouldn’t bet on it. Cue “Dead Parrot Sketch”.
Sherparick
@EriktheRed: Oh, he is dead. The Question is will he come back to life? In the books and even the show, he would not be first one to return “from that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns.” One thing about GoT is that G.R.R.M. and Benioff and Weiss really do practice the aphorism “Good writers borrow, great writers steal.” All three have stolen hot and heavy from Bill Shakespeare (a lot from Titus Andronicus who in some way is the model of Ned Stark) and Aeschylus (the sacrifice of Shireen to R’llor is taken straight from Agamemnon’s sacrifice of his daughter Iphigrenia to Artemis so he could sail his Army to Troy). And the Boltons remind me of McBeth. The problem with GoT is will the audience keep coming back for more? Well, as long Tyrion, Arys, and Drogon are around, probably.

I just installed Dragon Age Inquisition on my wife’s PC. It keeps locking up. Video card is a couple years old.
So I just now ordered a new larger gaming case for my PC with a high end Nvidia GTX 980 card, which is too long for my current case. I will give my wife the GTX 760 out of my PC to run her new game.
There. Problem solved!
Valdivia
@Robert Sneddon: From everything Martin is saying I think he really is dead, I still wasn’t ready for him to die. I thought he would make it to the end. :(
ET
John you really do make the grossities of dog ownership sound funny/wonderful.
As for GoT I read somewhere that the creators of the show have been in consultation with the author and do know where he is taking the story. They indicated they may get there differently but in the end their creation and the authors will end up at the same place. I also remember seeing that Jon Snow was supposed to die before the book series ended.
Johannes
You know nothing, John Cole.
Lee
@Sherparick:
Exactly. Melissandra appearing at Castle Black is a bit of a Chekhov’s Gun. Kit has an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he says that he is definitely dead. But this crew has done similar things before and according to his fans he has no new work scheduled.
The book will probably be released shortly before the premier of the next season on HBO. One glance at the table of contents will let you know if he lives or not.
One thing to note. Jon Snow has the second most POV chapters in all of the books. He is second only to Tyrion.
Viva BrisVegas
@Lee:
There is also the possibility of a reverse Chechov’s Gun to consider.
donnah
I’ve read that George RR Martin had to close his Twitter account because he killed all 140 characters.
Jon Snow was one of few remaining good guys, and in an episode filled with death, his was the most difficult for me to bear. And last week, when Shireen was sacrificed, well, that made me sick.
A new season will take an eternity to get here. And as I am a glutton for punishment, I will watch every episode.
WaterGirl
@donnah:

(From book reader discussions going back years + TV plot point.
(Scroll if you do not want to consider Jon Snow’s mother)
If Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen & Ned’s Sister Lyanna, then he has King’s blood. (And, yes, is Dany’s sister.) That stuff pooling all over the, uh, snow in the last scene was a heap of the kingly red stuff.
Melissandra can use King’s blood for all kinds of things. The TV show didn’t have her show up at Castle Black for no reason.
And Ghost, Jon’s direwolf, is not dead. Jon’s spirit may have fled to Ghost. Again, Melissandra could do something with that. So, possibly, could Bran and the Tree.
Kit Harrington may be off for a season. Or, not playing a character who is technically “alive”. But the books can’t end – which, of course, they may never do – without Jon Snow. “Dead” or “alive”. Someone has to fight the WhiteWalker King. (Though, could be Dany) They certainly made undead king a big character with that long close up in the battle ep.

40 or 50 bucks gets you a decent Turtle Beach. Anything beyond that for gaming purposes is just gilding the lily.

As much as I hated Cersei, and was glad she got her come uppance at the hand of the Faith Militant, that walk of shame scene was pretty messed up, though I confess that would be a cool punishment for all those rich people in California who think they don’t need to follow water restrictions.

The fifth book (A Dance with Dragons) opens with the POV chapter of a warg who actually does survive the death of his human body by shifting into different animals, which seems like WAY too heavy a setup to go unheeded.
Jon will be back.
samiam
I am pretty much done with that show. Was only half interested this season and kind of lost more interest as it progressed. They killed off the characters I liked and continue to abuse the ones I sort of like. Probably only a matter of time before they kill those off.
Raenelle
I get why they killed Jon. Where could his story arc go, exactly? He had essentially become Eddard.
What fascinated and horrified me about the finale was Stannis. Holy crap. You could see the defeat in his eyes when he began to realize all his sacrifices had been a mistake, for a delusion.
Now, I think Jon’s a feint. Is Jon dead? Will he be resurrected (always possible, because Mellisandre was at Castle Black and she serves the Red God, and we already know that the Red Priest, Thoros of Myr, was able to bring back Beric Dondarrion–several times)? So we mourn Jon and forget Stannis, because, after Shireen, he deserves despair and death. But we didn’t see him killed, and one really big theme in George R. R. Martin is the redemption of people who are morally bankrupt.

Ugh. Sympathies on the vomit. But i do love the reaction of dogs when you go thru a drive-thru. “You mean…there are places where you can just pull up….and people hand you food right through the window??? How come I never knew this before!”
Tripod
I finally gave up this season after a couple of episodes. It’s got a Superman problem with what’s her name and those dragons – endlessly off in pointless sub-plots while waiting for the last act.
Now watching Sense8. It’s a lot more human positive.

@Mayur:
Have had Dances with Dragons since release date. And haven’t felt compelled to finish it. Now that TV show caught up with it, going to be harder.
Because actually prefer the TV show meet-up of Tyrion and Dany.
Also wondering if next season TV going to have to circle back to more Bran and Arya action from books to give Martin time to concoct more book plot. Or if there will be an unusual aspect of TV show making its own story and – surprise – Martin comes out with an “alternate” POV.
Seems like having two plotlines would sell more books.

Spinoza Is My Co-pilot
Jon Snow is dead, both in the Game of Thrones and in the books.
However, it is almost certain he will be brought back to life by Melisandre through the agency of her god of Light (R’hllor – don’t recall if they used this name on GOT or not).
It was demonstrated a couple seasons back that the priests/priestesses of R’hllor have this power when the Hound kills Beric Dondarrion, but Beric is almost immediately brought back to life by Thoros (who had already done this multiple times for Beric).
But the point wasn’t really pressed, and no one’s mentioned it on GOT since that I can recall. Which is why I thought it was a serious mistake for Weiss and Benioff not to bring Catelyn’s resurrected character (taking Beric’s place) in the books into GOT, to remind us of this supernatural power associated with R’hllor. And that those so resurrected are not zombies like those resurrected by the Others (White Walkers on GOT) but are still themselves, even if understandably psychologically-changed (in the books Beric is, to some extent, Catelyn much more so).
I believe most book readers are very much expecting Melisandre to resurrect Jon. In the books she has long known that Stannis is not “the one” (probably even from the beginning of their relationship) and becomes focused on Jon as potentially being the real “savior” under R’hllor once they meet at the Wall.
Beric’s and Catelyn’s resurrections are not particularly important in themselves except in their limited minor plot-lines, but are very significant as foreshadowing Jon’s. He and Dany (with her dragons) are the most-important characters in the story in regards to the overarching existential-threat of the Others and their zombie hordes (though I think Bran in the Keebler-elf tree is likely also as important; we’ll see). Jon Snow will be back.
Spinoza Is My Co-pilot
@MazeDancer:
I did, too. Very much so. Of all the changes from the books to the HBO series I thought this one the best, mostly because the books’ treatment of Tyrion after he kills Tywin was implausible, even silly (Martin really went of the rails with it and couldn’t find a way to make it believable).
samiam
@Spinoza Is My Co-pilot: Zero fucks given. Like discussing suttle moral subplots and the human condition when describing star wars.
Mayur
@Spinoza Is My Co-pilot: no no no on lady stone heart. If people can’t be bothered to remember that r’hollor grants resurrection abilities from two seasons back (and they would put it in the recap for whatever episode anyway) too bad. Having an entirely separate storyline set in a different region and involving different characters (with Brienne taken away from the Sansa storyline to boot) is impossible to integrate with any kind of narrative economy.
Spinoza Is My Co-pilot
@samiam:
Noted.
So, which fiction books or TV shows or movies would you consider worth discussing vis-à-vis “suttle (sic) moral subplots and the human condition”?
Never mind – I wouldn’t give a fuck.

Like Jon’s being dead releases him from his vows as well.
So new needed at Castle Black.
