Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Everybody saw this coming.

The revolution will be supervised.

Bark louder, little dog.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

I was promised a recession.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Stormfront on Fifth Avenue

I know that nothing from the mouths of the nativist rump of the GOP should surprise me, but sweet merciful fucksticks:

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.

But I speak to border guards and they tell us what we’re getting. And it only makes common sense. It only makes common sense. They’re sending us not the right people.

It’s coming from more than Mexico. It’s coming from all over South and Latin America, and it’s coming probably — probably — from the Middle East. But we don’t know. Because we have no protection and we have no competence, we don’t know what’s happening. And it’s got to stop and it’s got to stop fast.

It’s just hard to process the fact that Trump made these remarks in the year 2015.

Maybe they have not been around here because they have been busy hacking into various news organizations and other web sites planting stories to make it look like there is this person called “Donald Trump”.

Read about that English white trash, grifters and fortune seekers at Jamestown, and the religious fanatics in New England. Those people had some issues. I am sure Trump would be the first to agree. These immigrants can be handful and have to be watched closely.

So, Steve King as Trump’s veep pick? What are the odds?

I also look forward to Trump’s proposal for the totally classy and amazing TRUMP Border Fence casino/resort complex. He’ll build it himself, which means he’ll still do the country favors out of the goodness of his heart as president, which will get him a few more points in the GOP primary polls.

Well I was wrong about this one:

Donald Trump’s use of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” at the launch of his presidential campaign was “not authorized” by the musician, according to Young’s manager.

Before Trump took to the podium to announce he was throwing his hat into the ring for the GOP presidential nominatiion, Young’s 1989 hit could be heard blasting through the sound system for the crowd gathered at Trump Tower in New York.

Young’s manager, Elliot Roberts, tells Mother Jones, “Donald Trump’s use of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ was not authorized.”

Young, says Roberts, is instead rooting for another presidential candidate on the opposite end of the political spectrum: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Young, 69, is a “longtime supporter” of Sanders, according to Roberts.

“Rockin’ in the Free World” was, in any case, an unusual choice for Trump. The song paints a deeply critical picture of the United States of the time, including a caustic reference to the “thousand points of light,” a slogan used in speeches by then-President George H.W. Bush.

“We got a thousand points of light for the homeless man/We got a kinder, gentler machine-gun hand,” the lyrics state.

I got to give it up for Trump, he’s taking political satire to a whole new level. Who else could grab the attention of a bunch of media folks and fans, look into a camera and say, “When did we beat Japan at anything”, as a partial explanation for a Presidential run? And do it all with a straight face no less?

    Well played sir.

@dmsilev: I’m all for sending Trump to a planet inhospitable to human life — Mercury would be a nice choice for him — but until NASA begins interplanetary human space exploration, we need a place to put him in the meantime. But I was figuring deep in the interior of Antartica, which would put him away from most of the penguin population. (Although, thinking back on John Carpenter’s The Thing, he may have already been there and had his body taken over by the alien invader, which was not able to properly replicate human hair.)

I really feel that with Trump there is some hope that when he doesn’t get the nomination(and he really couldn’t, could he?) he might run as a independent candidate & split the conservative vote. He has the ego, the money & probably no particular loyalty to the Republican party.

Oh, yeah. I point this out to my family pretty regularly – not that they’re particularly anti-immigrant, but I do it as a way of illustrating the absurdity of the position.

And I certainly don’t mean to dismiss nativist sentiment as no big deal. But it’s harder than it once was for the Trumps of the world to enact what they’d like to with respect to keeping the furriners out.

Before reading the thread (because I was taking a nap)…

Trump can go take a long walk off a short pier. From the Mexican and Hispanic workers I see around Queens, they are damned hard workers, working hard jobs for lowish pay because they need it to send back home to their families. They are here because they need to work and see opportunity here that they don’t see in Mexico and else where. They leave their homes, their families, their cultures to come here. It was the same when people left Europe to come here. They were coming for the chance to work at something different than what they could back in Italy, Greece, Poland, Germany, the Eastern European countries, even from the British Isles. It also played it part for Asians coming here — different opportunities and more opportunities to be better. We’ve always attracted the people who weren’t satisfied with their pre-determined lot in life in the ‘old country’.

eta: I’m sure we’d find someone in Trump’s family tree who fits this profile.

eta2: I have to make a fast trip to the store but I’ll read the original comments when I get back.

When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems

And who exactly does the author think most of the immigrants to the New World, particularly the portion that became the United States, were? The “best” of the lot were essentially speculating opportunists (essentially the Donald Trumps of their day) who had powerful enough political connections to be given huge land grants – and most of the rest were people who were of marginal or outright unsuccessful economic status back in Europe, which is why they sought a fresh start over here. And yes, there were some unsavory types among them, such as were portrayed in the movie “Streets of New York” about European/Irish immigrants living in mid-19th century New York City.

The hardest-working people in contemporary USA have nut-brown skin and work with leaf-blowers on their back, and most of them are here for the exact same reasons the English, Irish, Italians, etc. immigrated to the US a century or more ago.

Because although their supporters are at least a substantial single-digit minority of the US electorate (and undergoing gradual demographic shrinkage as time goes on)…too many folks are simply too inattentive or lazy to bother showing up, some convinced by deliberate propaganda that it makes no difference anyway whether they show up or not.

A prerequisite of winning is bothering to show up.

Donald Trump once proposed a more left-wing tax policy than Bernie Sanders? Yes! In 1999 Trump proposed a one-time wealth tax of 14.25 percent on all individuals and trusts with a net worth in excess of $10 million. The proceeds would be used to wipe out the national debt, with the savings in interest payments going to shore up Social Security and pay for middle-class tax cuts. (Vox)

@rikyrah: Oooh, that is interesting! After reading the link and some exchanges he had on twitter, it looks like Giordano is showing Sanders how socialism is ‘really done’, Giordano-style. In doing so, he is tapping a wedge into a longstanding fissure between the politically more powerful lefties of the economically comfortable class – more likely to be Sanders supporters I think – and the lower/working class (potential) lefties who Giordano is more likely to hang with.

Sanders can probably get away with ignoring the tiny faction represented by people like Giordano, just like Obama could (and did) get away with ignoring the tiny AA economic progressive/socialist faction; the kind of folks who can be found at Black Agenda Report, for example. [And in fact, BAR has something to say about Sanders as well!]

Criticism of Sanders from his left; didn’t see that coming! (but shoulda)

The funny thing about that is that a lot of that “fresh start” thing was for people who were elites, but second tier elites according to European standards, for whom the Americas were a chance to finally be first tier.

The tradition in France (and I think much of the rest of the continent) was that the firstborn son of a noble family would inherit the title and all that went with it; the second son would join the clergy; any surviving sons after that… would go seek their fortune overseas. In another age, “overseas” might mean the Crusades. In the age of colonization, it meant America. Where they could start their own little fiefdoms of which they would be boss.

I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a similar mindset among the merchants who moved – people who’d risen as high as they could in Europe but couldn’t make it to the top because they weren’t of royal or noble blood, and so wanted to move far away where the glass ceiling would be less relevant.

Trump’s mother and paternal grandparents were all immigrants. I don’t know about his German grandparents, but his mother was from the island of Lewis. Her maiden name was MacLeod, the same as about half of the people on Lewis at the time, I think, and was the daughter of a fisherman. In other words, about the same economic level as a lot of the people coming from Latin America.

Trump wants to build a wall along the Mexican border. Unless he plans to run it down the middle of the Rio Grande, most of that land is privately owned. That wall will either cut off the owners’ access to the river or cut off some of their property. The lawsuits to gain access to that property would tie up the courts for decads.

I don’t think so at all, There was certainly some kvetching by reporters and the “liberal media”, but what he did was unprecedented in modern politics and he just told them to suck it.

He lost votes because it was obvious that he, and others like him, are leaches on the business community, profiting by destroying companies and communities. This, and the dubious tax avoidance schemes used by people like him would have been much clearer if anyone had got a look at anything other then the two carefully planned tax returns.
