Do you really think these big-mouthed, ignorant yawpers have the stones to start an armed guerilla war against the federal government?
Yes, I think a few of them are that stupid, and that the initial group of supporters included some who were inflamed to that extent. As so often, the nutjobs believe that they have widespread support, and would resist with armed force in the conviction that “the countryside will rise”, when the truth is that they only talk to people like themselves.
Obama doesn’t want another Ruby Ridge, and I’m betting that it all goes down quietly when it goes down.

Another black church is burning – one previously burned down by the KKK. 7 in a week. Just as a thought experiment, imagine if Muslims were burning down white Christian churches at the rate of one a day. It would be EBOLA X ELEVENTY. BTW, I have a solution to the Rand Paul wild and crazy anything goes custom marriage contract puzzle from yesterday. It is easy as pie.
Incorporate the marriage as privately held limited liability corporation. People can buy shares and get rights in proportion to their ability to pay. And the beauty is, it will work for old fashioned two-person marriages too. The marriage will be a fictitious person. Extended family relationships can be handled by interlocking corporate boards of directors.
And even better, people can create total havoc and walk away, due to limited liability. GOP menfolk will just love that part of the deal.
I’ll get this to Rand before the August debate…. or maybe I’ll send it to Trump, he might like it too.
Tommy
@joel hanes: I agree. I think many want a fight. It always stuns me. My government isn’t suppressing me in any way I can see. I can pretty much do anything I want. Oh and if I wanted to revolt and take an armed fight to the government, well that would fail.

So far SPLC is sayin’ no evidence of hate crime group chatter.
But damn, 7 churches since the Charleston shooting, this one was historically burned by KKK in the past.

@lamh36: Horrible news, and I agree, getting to be too much for coincidence. The people who investigate these things tend to be very cautious, so I don’t think means much that they have not announced any conclusions yet.
But if they uncover anything, they need to get on it asap. I can see how church burnings might be committed unconnected locals, so might not be much ‘chatter’ until people start bragging around about what they did. It’s not like a burning a church as a form of race terror is an original idea and it doesn’t take a lot of planning or resources.

@hamletta: Absolutely. We’ve got way too many in my town;a few years ago considerably greater than 100 and with lots of interestingly named churches with no known denomination-affiliation. Both AA and white.
One of the churches that burned was here and had a 91 year old female minister. Also, too, the church had been robbed of its air conditioning unit a couple of weeks earlier. It’s located in a high crime and blighted area of town (we’ve lots of blight). While it was deliberately set on fire, there’s yet no reason to believe it was racially motivated. In fact, church burnings around these parts are a not infrequent occurrence.

@Tommy:
These are official positions of The United Methodist Church:
“The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Therefore self-avowed practicing homosexuals are not to be certified as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in The United Methodist Church.”
“The [conference council on finance and administration] shall have authority and responsibility to perform the following functions:
19. To ensure that no annual conference board, agency, committee, commission, or council shall give United Methodist funds to any gay caucus or group, or otherwise use such funds to promote the acceptance of homosexuality or violate the expressed commitment of The UMC ‘not to reject or condemn lesbian and gay members and friends’.”

We weren’t even close to the stage, but I could make out Maddie in her class dances and I loved every minute of it.
Misty is awesome in that she’s always said that she was told “she doesn’t have the body” for ballet. She not the usual tall, willowy, and thinly muscular ballerina of old (not even counting skin tone). Since she started at 13, that probably means that she has a normal teenage body and not one shaped from days and years of dance and gymnastic exercise.
Maddie is not destined to be tall or willowy either, but seeing Misty succeed and imagining Maddie doing the same…warms my heart!

As you know, der Kuss is a masculine noun. So one says ein Kuss when using the noun in the nominative case, i.e. as a subject; einen Kuss when using it in the accusative case, i.e. as a direct object.

And we have had a handful of homosexual pastors, both male and female. I think they voluntarily took an oath of abstinence in order to serve.

Oy, the heat here. Just heard that June 2015 had the warmest average temperature EVER for Vegas. beat the previous record by TWO DEGREES. We are heading into our fourth week of daily highs over 105; the past two weeks have been over 108 every day. It gets all the way down to 95 or so sometime after 4 am. It is just misery on wheels.
Most of my plants have reached the stage they usually don’t hit until August; they just seem to say “fuck it, too hot”, and give up, no matter how much water, or even shade they are getting. Just too much heat.

There came a moment, a blinding flash of understanding the reality of millions of anonymous people only a paycheck away from disaster, even though we were not in that position. Long story, unnecessary to tell it.

@opiejeanne:
I find Tommy harmless. Aside from his habit of shoe-horning some mention of his relatives, particularly his niece, into almost every comment. And his curious insistence on calling himself a military brat, even though his father is a civilian.
opiejeanne
@Elizabelle: I wanted to do that, take 101 and the 1, but Mr opiejeanne is going to have surgery on his back in July and we needed to get home to both our cat and our garden, and to have the pre-op physical. He has a pinched nerve due to a ruptured disc. The “filling of the jelly donut” is pressing against the sciatic nerve and while the pain is now gone he can not flex nor point his left foot. He can’t push off with the left when walking, which slows him way down. He can’t go up on “elevee”, as it were. The pain is long gone, he’s just got this interrupted conversation between his brain and his motor nerves ( I think that’s right).
They;re going to make a little incision to shave off a bit of the jelly from the donut so that it stops pressing against the nerve.
Anyway, the cat is deliriously happy that we’re home, our youngest daughter is happy we’re home so that she can go back to Seattle to her own apartment, and the garden is happy because we have time to water it properly. And who would have thought we’d need to water at all in June here?

@Elizabelle:
Gilliard was pretty damn good. His death so young was/is a tragedy.

@Amir Khalid: “curious insistence.”
LOL. That is so mannerly.
New thread up. Although, it’s about Chris Christie …
opiejeanne
@Amir Khalid: Yes, harmless. I’m a terrible person for having little patience with him.
opiejeanne
@Elizabelle: Well, let’s go bash someone who deserves it, then.
Omnes Omnibus
@Amir Khalid: @Elizabelle: @opiejeanne: Ever catch his comments about Jews? Just saying.
opiejeanne
@Omnes Omnibus: Tommy’s? No.
Now I’m afraid to ask.

Got the pre-summons questionnaire yesterday. Grrr. Seems like I just had jury duty.
I did discover that you don’t get picked if the idiot prosecutor says, “raise your hand if you think we have the greatest legal system in the world” and you don’t raise your hand.
Race night tonight. Had the old boat with three people instead of the two everybody else carried ( a big disadvantage in light wind). I had the stick for two races, won our class for both. The club ace had the stick for one race and beat the entire fleet. Our newb had the stick for one race and got good experience to make him better next time. All in all, a good night.
opiejeanne
@Omnes Omnibus: Although I do remember being pretty angry when he kept insisting that Amanda Knox must be guilty of something because he’d never had a dead body in his house.
I finally decided he was drunk.

@opiejeanne: You can look at the archives. You can watch in the future, but as a very WASPy person he has always annoyed me.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mike J: Type of boat?
opiejeanne
@Omnes Omnibus: Yes, very WASP-Y. I will either dig through or keep an eye out in the future. I skip a lot of the longer ones because tl;dr, so I’ve probably missed something.
(and I’m a WASP, but I’ve noticed that some of us can make me feel as if I’m not quite, quite. You know?
Omnes Omnibus
@opiejeanne: Just watch.

@SFAW: Thanks for the link. Bookmarked it.
You will retch, but I sort of think the only way I heard of Steve G during his lifetime was mentions by Andrew Sullivan, whose blog I read. And it is through Sully that I found Balloon Juice, some time after Obama had been elected …
Now not sure if it was Sully or not … but in checking on it, found this hilarious driftglass slam of Sully and Breitbart, with un-hilarious mention of Gilliard’s passing.
You must check out the illustration.

@Linnaeus
Openly>/i> gay clergy member, perhaps. First gay clergy member ordained? Not by a long, long shot.
opiejeanne
@Elizabelle: The illustration won’t load for me, but the rest is great.
Elizabelle
@opiejeanne: Bummer. It’s Andrew Sullivan looking like Sarah Palin’s cover for Going Rogue. Worth looking for.

@Elizabelle:
Although I don’t have a particularly high opinion of Sullivan, he didn’t used-to-be a complete fool. Even if he were, finding Gilliard via Andy should not be retch-inducing.
On the other hand, your apparent desire to flagellate yourself by watching Fox non-stop, and performing similar acts of contrition, well … we should have a little chat about that, my dear.
Anyway, I miss Gilly, wish he were still here.
ETA: And to Gilly, “FTFY” did not mean “Fixed That For You.”
