I predict Thurston will give the nice trainer a nervous breakdown.

After the spate of “My x dog is smarter than you honor student” bumper stickers became a thing, my sister’s dog failed obedience school. Our search for a bumper sticker proclaiming “My rat terrier is an o-school dropout” was fruitless.
Hopefully Thurston does better than Hudson did.

Thurston is taking John for training. Hopefully there will be updates.

It’s not quite gender-appropriate, but I was reminded of this song.

Be very careful, John. Many years ago, I had a silky terrier named Aussie. We went to our first obedience class. Aussie took one look at all the dogs in the class circle and promptly lifted his leg and peed on my leg. Pretty uncomfortable to parade in the circle for the next hour with wet jeans.

@Josie:
John will forget to wear his pants, so no worries.

@Josie: What we do for those we love. lol

I predict John will create more trauma for the trainer than Thurston.

Oh, I can not wait to hear the updates to this day. I didn’t even try to get the Beast into puppy classes, I assumed it would be a disaster and we’d be asked to leave.

@ThresherK (GPad): MY guy failed puppy school, 2 maybe 3 times.
He didn’t ignore the trainer or bother other dogs. My father said “I called him, the trainer called him, he stopped, looked at us, (assessed whether listening was profitable) then turned back to whatever he was doing.

Since I don’t have cable, I’m listening to the lady’s final at Wimbledon. The announcers are quite good.

Doesnt Thurston already know how to be a puppy…
Yes, old joke.

I was going to pop over to Readercon, but I think I need a day on my porch with books and beers.

I read this and was reminded of John Cole:
Man’s two cute “puppies” grew into wild bears

Our dog Spanky, a yellow Lab mix, was so friendly and goofy during puppy training that he made me crazy. Not the least bit aggressive, just galumphing around to visit the other dogs, wagging his tail like a big baton and smiling the whole time. “Sit” and “stay” were his weak points.
Joy
If my idiot lab (he’s a goofy idiot, but he’s MY goofy idiot) can graduate from puppy school any dog can. BTW, I love puppy school. You get to play with all different dogs and its fun to watch all the dogs interact. The worst part is the over-achiever parent – same as kid school.

I would like a liveblog of this event. That is all.

@Germy Shoemangler: Unpossible!

I predict Thurston will be perfect for the trainer so that he can make John look extra silly. “It’s not that I can’t do it, Daddy, just not for YOU! hahawoofiehaha”
I had one like that. Had another one who would be perfect for me at the class, but his real interest was in being better than the other dogs, so when we went home he couldn’t be bothered. They all turned out fine in the end.
My challenge today is the recently neutered (3 weeks since) kitten who sprays all around the toilet after I scoop the litter boxes. Which are on another floor of the house. What is the thinking there? “You mess with my potty, so I mess with yours”?
Pogonip
I don’t know if this is really necessary…I had the impression Thurston already had Cole pretty well trained…

It seems my Meniere’s is back. My low-band hearing is gone an my vertigo has returned. And is always seems to happen after an airplane flight.

Good luck, Cole. I do not believe Lovey would do well. Koda tries to teach her things, but Lovey does what Lovey wants.
She is recovering nicely from her surgery. Still a little sluggish but starting to play with Koda when she’s not taking power naps. Today was the first time I had to stop them from playing too rough, like they usually do when Lovey doesn’t have an abdomen full of new stitches. A few more days of healing and then I won’t worry so much. In other Lovey news, she now weighs 9.2 pounds, which is a big gain for such a tiny puppeh. We’ll be lucky if she gets to 15 pounds as an adult, I’m thinking. She’s super strong, though, and her puppy fat is gone. Probably the result of all the wrestling around and tug of war battles with Koda.

I have a feeling that every dog owner that brings one in for training also tells everyone how *their* dog is going to be the one that stumps the professional trainers who train dozens of dogs or more per year.

@muddy: Maybe the kitten is imitating you, trying to make you a role model? “This is where you pee? Okay, then I’ll pee here too” except kitteh is too tiny to negotiate the toilet seat or else just assumes the general area of the toilet is acceptable.

@Howard Beale IV: all the best to you. i had an extended period of vertigo and it’s not something i would wish on anyone.

Oh puleeze – he’s half poodle. He will be the star of the class. The challenge with poodles (and part poodles) is figuring out how they figure things out. They’re thinkers.
And stinkers.
muddy
@Germy Shoemangler: He happily uses the litter boxes though. Then he watches me scoop and then a while later I find the bathroom floor is soaked down at the toilet end of the room.
He could probably use the toilet if he’d a mind to, he amuses himself clambering about on the wooden clothes drying racks, he’s very athletically adept.
Germy Shoemangler
I wish my next door neighbor would invest in some obedience school. The dog is a beautiful puppy, but they seem to think yelling at it constantly is the way to go. They yell, the dog barks, and nobody learns anything.
The neighbors are Do-It-Yourself dog trainers.
Germy Shoemangler
@muddy: I have seen stories of cats who learned to use the toilet. Not sure if they remember to flush.
muddy
@Germy Shoemangler: I know someone who was trying to teach his cats that. There is a device you put on the toilet seat to start with, it has a little litter in it. I only have one bathroom so it would be a hassle. I wouldn’t care about the flushing as long as it was actually inside the toilet!
Ruari the kitten has found that he can leap out from around the corner in the bathroom and scare big dogs, possibly he is trying to make it his lair or something. I’ve had a lot of cats, this is the first one to do this spraying bs. At least it’s in the bathroom.
Howard Beale IV
@lurker dean: At first I thought it was a chunk of ear wax-cleaned it out, but nope-big gaping hole in the low to mid-frequency band. And when the dizziness kicked in, I said, oh shit-here we go again. Off to my PCP, then to the ENTW (ears, nose, thtort and wallet)
glaukopis
@Howard Beale IV: My sympathies. I had it for several years but it looks like I’ve defeated it – residual hearing loss in one ear though. Very low salt diet was the key for me – but don’t try this without a doctor’s guidance because very low salt is dangerous.
Poopyman
@Howard Beale IV: After misdiagnosis as BPPV, I discovered my vertigo came from my eustatian tube, and that aggressive ear popping cleared it right up.
Worth a try.
Germy Shoemangler
@muddy: I can imagine a little wicker basket magazine holder filled with issues of “Cat Fancy Magazine” next to the toilet, in case kitteh wants to read about advancements in flea collars or scratching posts.
Howard Beale IV
@glaukopis: The thing that gives me the red ass is that when I listen to classical misic on phones/headsets it totally blows away the spatial keys I use. Free air listening is one thing-headphone listening just gets trashed.
glaukopis
@Howard Beale IV: My ENT was the one who suggested the low salt diet – but he prescribed potassium supplements to help. Salt is so pervasive I basically avoided all prepared foods, and cooked from scratch. Restaurants (especially Asian) were impossible. Soooo glad it’s gone though.
Howard Beale IV
@glaukopis: On a past round I was given a diurectic, which may have helped. During the last case of vertigo, I was given Transderm-Scop, which worked wonders.

It’s also the 20th anniversary of the massacre at Srebenica.

How is Bernie Sanders the Donald Trump of the left? Let good Christian Ana Marie Cox tell you!
glaukopis
@Howard Beale IV: Music is hard. Group meetings where people are talking on both sides of me make me crazy. But with the combination of age-related high-frequency hearing loss, I think the Chinese class I’m taking is harder – certainly when I’m trying to listen to the audio files with the earphones. I got a hearing aid – almost useless for low-frequency loss.
