@beltane: Hey! I got stuck in a wine rack once. Long story.
I just hope Bill The Cat comes back. I had completely forgotten that Bill played Trump back in the 80s.
ETA, from Wiki: Bill the Cat twice won the National Radical Meadow Party’s nomination to run for President of the United States, in 1984 and 1988, despite being dead in the first instance, and despite having a vocabulary that mainly consisted of “Aack!” He lost twice, once because of coughing up a fur ball on Connie Chung. In spite of this political affiliation, he embarked on a torrid love affair with Jeane Kirkpatrick, then was later used as the primary source for an illegal cat-sweat-based baldness cure. His brain was replaced with Donald Trump’s (who had been hit with his yacht’s anchor while sunbathing in New York Harbor).

I had a cat who had to wear the Cone of Shame for some veterinary issue, and somehow he managed to get the cone vacuum-sealed to my kitchen floor. I came in and found him glued to the floor, with muted yowling coming from inside the cone. Took a lot of effort to get him free, too.
This same cat also nearly hung himself from a Christmas doorknob decoration and would frequently get stuck upside down with his legs over his head and forget how to roll over the rest of the way. He had problems.
I knew something felt just sort of, you know, off, for the last 25 years.
Years ago I was pleased to discover that my favorite Bloom County cartoon was one of his too, when he put together a small page of his favorites on request. “Excuse me, would you mind putting your nose out while I’m eating?” if anyone’s counting. Also the one that ended “Forgot to carry the two”.

@Mike J: Nobody’s bigger in comedy, he’s done more for entertainment than anybody, he’s killing them all with laughs. Nobody makes for more laughs than Trump.
I did notice, watching Trump on TRMS earlier, that he seems to be imitating the Catskills schtick and the delivery of Joan Rivers in her later and somewhat sad years, substituting nonsense retching noises for punchlines. Seemed to work with his crowd.
@22over7: it’s not habit forming so much as your cavities get waaaay dehydrated after a few days and yeah then red things start coming out instead of yellow things.

So it’s been exactly 7 days since I started this new weight loss plan. I’ve actually been trying to eat healthier for at least 2weeks now. But this morning was my first weigh in after this 1st week of tracking and trying my best ro adhere to the plan I selected.
I’ve lost 5lbs from watching my food intake, primarily. I’ll be adding sone exercise soon as I get the clearance from my doctor!
It was a tough 1st week…but I learned a good bit about my eating habits!
So in celebration of losing the 5 lbs on less than par food choices I decided to make one of my favorite soul food dishes for my lunch this week. I used all low fat or fat free ingredients. With the right amount of portion sizing I was able to make lunch or dinner for next 4 days!
Here is my Stuffed Bell Peppers w/ground turkey and shrimp and low fat baked mac and cheese…
I also went to Costco for the first time…wow, it’s def nicer than Walmart!
23.
Monala
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Oh God. I was about to write, “I hope they don’t bring back Bill the Cat.” I thought he was the least funny character of the series, not to mention gross.
And yeah, if you shop there enough to cover the annual membership Costco is worlds better than WalMart and you have the added knowledge they value their employees and aren’t hellbent on destroying America’s public schools.
We had a visitor at my office this morning who just came back from ComiCon with the same flu bug. He was supposed to stay all day but he couldn’t even make it to lunchtime.
Good job! Planning your meals and writing it all down are two of the best things you can do to make a sustainable change. When you’re ready to exercise, make sure you try a lot of different things to see what you like. When I first started exercising, I refused to admit it was “exercise.” I wasn’t exercising, I was window-shopping on my lunch break. For an hour.
@Mnemosyne (tablet): what’s worked for me, like always, is exercise that’s either a sport or a skill. Fencing, tae Kwan do, other martial arts, lacrosse, all that stuff. Squash is super fun too. But you will never find me on a stationary bike.
I hate gyms. Gonna start off with walking, the easiest and cheapest way to do it. I have issues with my feet and knees but in the long run, I hope to get into doing some running.
Right now though I found these aerobic walking programs on you tube it’s been some really hot days down here. I’m pretty out of shape so I don’t wanna get heat stroke or something while outaide, so thw you tube vids will work nicely. and of course on nicer days, walking around the neighborhood will be good
33.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@lamh36: Right now though I found these aerobic walking programs on you tube it’s been some really hot days down here.
Don’t hate me if I suggest mall walking… is that an option?
Especially if you have knee issues, make sure to invest in some good walking shoes. Go to a running store (not a big box store), tell them what your issues are, and have them watch you walk around. It’ll set you back about $100, but it will save you a lot of pain (literally) in the long run.
Plus once you have the first pair, you can usually find additional pairs of the same shoe on the web for cheaper. But make sure to wear the shoes they recommend for you for at least a week before buying more.
I need to either take a class (which forces me to be at a specific place at a specific time) or I need to do “practical” exercise. I won’t go out and ride my bike as exercise, but I’ll ride around doing errands and get “incidental” exercise that way.
I have my second swimming class tomorrow. Need to NOT forget to bring a towel this time!
37.
Felanius Kootea
@Mnemosyne (tablet): I second this. I went to a running store years ago, they watched me walk and figured out that I could use some Brooks shoes (Adrenaline GTS) for mild over-pronation. I’ve been walking with Brooks shoes ever since and now I get them cheaper on Zappos or Amazon. One of the best things I’ve done. Walking for me is the very best form of exercise (mostly because I enjoy doing it and hate everything else).
@lamh36: indoor soccer shoes ended up being my best bet. $50, Adidas.
40.
Suzanne
@Mnemosyne (tablet): I have been doing a weightlifting class called Group Power, because I want to look like Serena Williams and/or Michelle Obama—strong and awesome. Also my abs are weak since having my younger Spawn.
I have also been doing Weight Watchers, even though my BMI is still within normal range. I don’t actually care if I lose weight but I want to turn squishiness into muscle and get smaller.
I am considering getting a breast reduction. I really want one, but I am having trouble picturing my body so different. The devil you know, and all that.
41.
Honus
Never really liked Bloom County. Always thought it was a heavy-handed and unfunny Doonesbury imitation. I really miss Kudzu and Shoe (RIP Doug Marlette and Jeff MacNelly, both way too soon).
One of the lines I remember was when the reverend Will B. Dunn visited Kudzu’s Uncle Dub Dubose (who won the Nobel Prize for Auto Mechanics, which he subsequently used for a doorstop in his shop). As he was leaving Dunn said “see you in church Sunday, Dub.” Dub replied “don’t hold your breath, preacher.”
You must be a generation older than the rest of us (I just turned 46). By the time I was old enough to read “Doonsbury,” it had become a bit of a soap opera with characters I didn’t get. Who’s Joanie? Did these people used to be married? Why is that weird guy using a cigarette holder?
Opus, I understood. Milo was around my age, unlike the full-grown adults in “Doonsbury.” And it helped me realize that, no, I was not crazy, and Reagan and his conservative acolytes were morons.
True story: my older brother actually did think Jeane Kirkpatrick was brilliant. I read “Bloom County,” so I knew she was not.
It’s better to wear a smaller size than to weigh less on the scale. Plus the best way to ward off weight gain as you age is weight training — aging causes muscles to atrophy unless you fight it with weight training.

@Mnemosyne (tablet): you are probably right. I’m 16 years older than you and I did feel like Breathed was recapitulating a lot of Trudeau’s stuff, but if I hadn’t read Doonesbury for years before, and didn’t identify with its characters, Bloom County may have resonated more. When I grew up the funnies were mostly Brenda Starr, Dick Tracy and Steve Canyon. Lil Abner and Pogo were political, but like Doonesbury for you, they were a generation ahead of me and I didn’t really get the humor. Then along came Doonesbury with college students, dope smoking, a clear anti-war message and Hunter Thompson references.

Yeah. I liked Bill the Cat, because the Trump brain implant was funny. But Opus was my favorite. I still have my “Opus Penguin Lust” t-shirt. It’s been long demoted to only suitable for painting or sleeping in, but I’ve never, ever been able to bring myself to toss it.

Stupid cellphone weather alert – woke me right up for a goddamn flash flood warning.
I’ve lost 5lbs from watching my food intake, primarily. I’ll be adding sone exercise soon as I get the clearance from my doctor!
Good work. I lost 45 lbs mostly from watching intake and walking. After I dropped 30 lbs I started running, etc. but I could have done the whole thing just from walking. The math is easy: burn 500 a day and eat 1500 a day. You’ll run a steady calorie deficit.
Most important things for me was to not drink calories. (Effectively) no sugar, no sugar substitutes. Only drink coffee, lightly sweetened tea, water, etc. Eat a lot of salads (as much as you want). Takes some getting used to, but once you get used to it, it’s pretty easy from there out. I walk/run about 25-30 miles a week.
Go to a running store (not a big box store), tell them what your issues are, and have them watch you walk around. It’ll set you back about $100, but it will save you a lot of pain (literally) in the long run.
This x1000. My running shoes are great (Brooks as well), but the real win for me was my walking shoes, which are actually light hikers – Merrell Moab. A bit warm in summer, but I’ve walked 10 miles in them with zero discomfort at the end. They might only be perfect for me, but the right shoes make a world of difference.
Yeah, weird. I get one of those in the middle of the night about once or twice a year. Jolts me like hell. And I don’t live anywhere close to a flash-flood danger zone.
I love my Merrell Moabs. I have two pairs, low and mid (over-the ankle). And I believe they are the footwear choice of fearless leader John Cole.
Coincidentally, I am expecting delivery tomorrow (Tuesday) of a pair of Rockport World Tour walking shoes, which I found on deep discount. Gonna try those out for a slightly more “normal looking” alternative.

@Steeplejack: Mine are low. I’m well into my 2nd pair. They’re good for about 2500 miles of walking before they wear through.
I tried on about 100 pairs of walking/hikers before settling on these. I got them, wore them home and then walked 3 miles. No break-in needed, no soreness. It was amazing. I’m considering filling a closet with them like Elaine and the Sponge, just in case they stop making them.
I know the feeling. I’m on about my fourth and fifth pairs, combined. They got me through a lot of long, foot-killing shifts at Barnes & Noble (wafer-thin carpet over concrete floors). Wore the mids more in the winter, when they were better for the long walk home around midnight after the buses stopped running. (Cue the lonesome harmonica music.)
And I also wear them for urban pedestrianizing and day hikes in the parks and woods.
And we have an Iran deal. Wooo hoo. Everything they were saying in the media two days ago about how Kerry caved (arms embargo) turns out to be untrue imagine that!

I reserve judgement on the Iran deal. I want to see, if it is strong enough to withstand a potential Republican (mis)administration.
Bill Clinton via Jimmy Carter as his chief negotiator worked out a non-proliferation deal with North Korea that was flushed down the toilet by Bush & Co.
Make no mistake, Obama achieved this despite DC conventional wisdom on Iran. He deserves extra credit precisely cause he didn’t listen to it

Thank you Mr. President.
For decades, America all too often has treated military action as a first resort rather than a last resort. I’ve watched this country make that fatal mistake all too often, from the rice paddies of Vietnam to the deserts of Iraq.
Today’s agreement represents a monumental shift in approach, one that would not have been possible without the wise, patient and persistent leadership of President Barack Obama. When the history of this moment is told in times to come, I hope Barack Obama will get his proper share of credit for this wonderful and historic moment.

Barack Obama has secured support from Gulf leaders for his attempt to reach a nuclear deal with Iran as a summit outside Washington concluded on Thursday with the first glimpses of possible rapprochement on an issue that has alarmed many US allies in the region.
[The] White House officials were optimistic of a possible breakthrough in attitudes more broadly after warmer than expected praise from the official delegation of six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
“The president spoke about the … agreement with Iran and I am here to say that the GCC welcomes this agreement and we hope at the same time that this will be a key factor for stability in the region,” said the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as he stood alongside Obama.

What annoyed me in the article headline was the ‘if ever’. Like we already doubt this will work. Just typical Village framing.
There is a strong chance that it will not work out as planned. This is really complicated shit. That doesn’t mean it should not be tried and that breakthroughs be acknowledged and celebrated.
The last time we had in issue with a nuclear program (in that case imaginary), a president led us into the most ill-advised war (and far reaching policy fiasco) in our history.
President Obama has laid down a marker that it is better to give peace a chance on this issue, and if this agreement can manage to hold over it’s ten year run, that will help constraint the actions of others, such as HRC if she wins out.
There are folks who reflexively defend the president and there are folks who reflexively attack. That all has been a bit boring in its predictability. On the balance, the guy and his administration has been achieving some really good outcome in some quite challenging conditions.
edit. Since one knows who the unrelenting nay sayers are going to do, why pay attention?

This same cat also nearly hung himself from a Christmas doorknob decoration and would frequently get stuck upside down with his legs over his head and forget how to roll over the rest of the way. He had problems.

Oh that’s what’s been wrong, no Bloom County.

Trump got Letterman to return for a top 10 list and brought Bloom County back.

So it’s been exactly 7 days since I started this new weight loss plan. I’ve actually been trying to eat healthier for at least 2weeks now. But this morning was my first weigh in after this 1st week of tracking and trying my best ro adhere to the plan I selected.
Drumroll please…
Pics: before & after (with portion control)..
I also went to Costco for the first time…wow, it’s def nicer than Walmart!
Monala
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Oh God. I was about to write, “I hope they don’t bring back Bill the Cat.” I thought he was the least funny character of the series, not to mention gross.

@Mnemosyne (tablet): @Major Major Major Major:
I hate gyms. Gonna start off with walking, the easiest and cheapest way to do it. I have issues with my feet and knees but in the long run, I hope to get into doing some running.
Right now though I found these aerobic walking programs on you tube it’s been some really hot days down here. I’m pretty out of shape so I don’t wanna get heat stroke or something while outaide, so thw you tube vids will work nicely. and of course on nicer days, walking around the neighborhood will be good
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Don’t hate me if I suggest mall walking… is that an option?
lamh36
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: It would be good, but God I hate malls…lol.
I don’t even like to go ro them when I have to buy something
Mnemosyne (tablet)
@lamh36:
Mnemosyne (tablet)
@Major Major Major Major:

I am considering getting a breast reduction. I really want one, but I am having trouble picturing my body so different. The devil you know, and all that.
Mnemosyne (tablet)
@Honus:
Mnemosyne (tablet)
@Suzanne:

Tenar Darell

@lamh36:
Keep at it. The payoff is definitely worth it.
? Martin
@Mnemosyne (tablet):
Steeplejack
@Botsplainer:

The beeb is reporting that we have a nuclear deal with Iran. A final session at 8:30 GMT (4:30 EST) and then a press conference.
Prepare for Congress to lose its shit. And don’t forget about New Horizon tomorrow. Big day.
? Martin
Steeplejack
@? Martin:
I know the feeling. I’m on about my fourth and fifth pairs, combined. They got me through a lot of long, foot-killing shifts at Barnes & Noble (wafer-thin carpet over concrete floors). Wore the mids more in the winter, when they were better for the long walk home around midnight after the buses stopped running. (Cue the lonesome harmonica music.)
And I also wear them for urban pedestrianizing and day hikes in the parks and woods.
Valdivia
And we have an Iran deal. Wooo hoo. Everything they were saying in the media two days ago about how Kerry caved (arms embargo) turns out to be untrue imagine that!

@raven: Progress! Yeah, time is up for your wife, decisions have to be made.
@BillinGlendaleCA: My loathing for plumbing starts with the fact that there is no wood involved except as an impediment to progress (plumbers motto: “Main structural member in my way? Not for long!”)(works for other trades too) and things have to be just right or else they leak. Even when they don’t leak right away, if things aren’t just right it can start leaking months later.
That and the fact that you can’t fix it by pounding on it with a 24 oz framing hammer..

@David Koch: One of the few things Palin said that I actually cared about was “how’s that hopey, changey thing work in’ out for ya?” It still infuriates me. Are you actually sneering at the concept of hope and optimism? What the hell is wrong with your brain?
Anyway I am feeling very good about hopey changey this year. What a summer! And the stuff going on in Maine (wingnut governor “accidentally creating feminist paradise” as Wonkette puts it) is icing on the cake.
As for the weighty issues of Doonesbury vs Bloom County discussed upthread: I read Doonesbury back almost at the beginning (they were still in college) and I read Bloom County from the start. I loved them both. I don’t think they’re treading the same territory at all. And neither one is purely political.
Also too, Bloom County came along when Doonesbury had started to get kind of meh.
