@efgoldman: I’m not sure it counts as stepping on when Cole’s last post was an hour ago…
Anyway, how are you, dear?
Mike in NC
OK, so ‘Sharknado 3’ had absolutely no redeeming social value. Too bad they couldn’t get Trump to do a cameo where a shark bites off his head.
Belafon
@Mike in NC: I think you were watching it for the wrong reason.
Tree With Water
Quite possibly my favorite Stones song, and I love the Stones. What a great story, thanks.

Speaking of the Stones, have been enjoying this alternate take on Dead Flowers that they released with the Sticky Fingers reissue.
Gin & Tonic
Earlier today a friend of mine was gravely wounded and a friend of his was killed. They were defending their country from foreign aggression, which, to his shame, President Obama resolutely avoids calling a war, even though everyone affected knows that that is what it is. While this will make me sound like a wingnut screaming “why won’t he call it terrorism,” accurately naming an action matters, and I wish the US would do so. It wouldn’t make my friend any less wounded, or his friend any less dead, but it would actually mean something to their compatriots who are still fighting for their independence.

Goose flesh, every time Merry comes up on the track. Every time since 1970z
Gin & Tonic
@efgoldman: In the vicinity of Donetsk, Ukraine.
Omnes Omnibus
@dedc79: That’s wonderful. Sounds like it belongs on “Exile” rather than “Sticky Fingers.”

@Omnes Omnibus: Agreed, a strange fit for that album. And then there’s Townes’ cover and the Cowboy Junkies’. I like them all….

For a second, I thought my ears were clearing up. One of my ex’s friends from high school is in that docu! SHe spent a lot of time touring the world the past 25 years. It certainly sounds fun.
dedc79
@Omnes Omnibus: Comment stuck in moderation, but suffice it to say I agree with you and also that there are some great covers of that song (Townes, Cowboy Junkies…)
SiubhanDuinne
this place, but miss little boots. why is everyone so angry? but love this place.
Omnes Omnibus
@dedc79: Disturbingly, Ke$ha has a surprising good cover of it.
dedc79
@Omnes Omnibus: woah, I was not expecting that. Not bad at all.
Omnes Omnibus
@dedc79: She also did this.
Davebo
@Gin & Tonic:
Sad to hear but even more sad that it’s not surprising. Here’s hoping your friend recovers and that sanity reaches that part of the globe.
But I’m not encouraged.
John Revolta
@Charles Pierce: Agreed. I can get chills just thinking about it.
dedc79
@Omnes Omnibus: Well she lost me on that one, but brave of her to put it out there.
Was trying to think of other songs like Gimme Shelter with haunting vocals. This one‘s got a 60s vibe but is pretty recent.
guachi
@Goblue72:
No shit. Is this the first time you’ve ever seen an article about a white person being killed by cops? The website killedbypolice (I think that’s the name) lists 466 white people (race verified) killed by cops in 2014 with links to every single death.
divF
@efgoldman: I took a peek at the menu. It brings back memories of my father’s and my grandmother’s cooking.
Only 20 miles from my sister’s house. Hmm…need to plan a trip.
Omnes Omnibus
@dedc79: My thought is that she is apparently capable of trying things artistically. Who knew?
Goblue72
@guachi: Um no, it’s not the first time I’ve heard of white folks being killed by police. Not the first time ice heard of black folks killed by police either. But thanks for playing, jagoff.
Kristine
My favorite Stones song. I will be passing this video link around.
Omnes Omnibus
@Kristine: More than this?
PurpleGirl
Those Rolling Stones songs brought back thoughts of my undergrad sophomore year — Spent almost every day having lunch at Micky Fromkin’s apartment. A group of us gathered, ate lunch and played the Rollings Stones. Two of the group got married and used Wild Horses as the song for their first dance.
Kristine
@Omnes Omnibus: For me, not even close. Gimme Shelter is Everest, and everything else is Appalachian foothills. I’m a fan of the song more than the band. It’s the guitar, and Merry’s voice.
napoleon
I really liked the film 20 feet.
Keith G
@napoleon: Late last year, I was streaming that film as background while I did chores. Five minutes in, I was immovably glued to the screen soaking up every scene and every note.
J
@Charles Pierce: Me too. My favorite Stones’ song, and my favorite moment in it.
I'mNotSureWhoIWantToBeYet
@Gin & Tonic: Condolences. :-(
It’s horrible what Putin is doing there, and elsewhere. I hope the Russian people come to their senses and get rid of him and his compatriots sooner rather than later.
Cheers,
Scott.

Finally saw this documentary last month and loved it.

@Goblue72: Very sad. Do not see why EMTs allowed this to happen. Saw The Panic at Forecastle. Great set. No chemical enhancement for me beyond a little reefer.

I don’t really like the blues (though I love gospel, and can’t say why). I grew up surrounded by Stones maniacs…and I didn’t like the music. When I saw the movie, however, it changed everything. I’m now a closet Stones fan. It even moved me to read Keith Richards’ bio which was a great read.
2 other films on singers/music that also stand out and have changed how I see black performers
Mama Africa – Miriam Makeba (I was a fan of hers before seeing this and see in a different light the challenges of someone African or African-American trying to find a home for herself in the world). The movie is terrific.
What Happened, Miss Simone? Nina Simone – I am an unabashed Nina Simone fanatic. I put her music on all mix tapes I ever made (yes I are old), and I’ve seen her perform live twice. I read a bio she’d written and was disappointed with the whole thing. And I wasn’t a fan of her daughter’s singing. So I avoided thinking about the movie, until boredom hit, and wouldn’t you know.. an amazing film. I’m also going to write a fan letter to her daughter.

@Gin & Tonic: I have a Ukie friend (born and lives in the US), who travels, when she can, to Ukraine to bolster her relatives with money and supplies. They’re not in danger yet, since they’re not in Donetsk, but are preparing for when Putin casts his net wider and wider.
Really sorry to hear about your friend.
Has anyone commented on whether or not it was the humiliation factor of the Olympics that caused Putin to invade Ukraine and take over of Crimea?
