Jeb! on O’Malley: “If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn't have apologized.” http://t.co/9I0UZCyZ20
— daveweigel (@daveweigel) July 23, 2015
From the Washington Post article:
After an event in Gorham, N.H. today, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush rolled his eyes at the mention of protesters who heckled the phrase “black lives matter, white lives matter, all lives matter” at a progressive conference…
“We’re so uptight and so politically correct now that we apologize for saying ‘lives matter?'” asked Bush. “Life is precious. It’s a gift from God. I frankly think that it’s one of the most important values that we have. I know in the political context it’s a slogan, I guess. Should he have apologized? No. If he believes that white lives matter, which I hope he does, then he shouldn’t have apologized to a group that seemed to disagree with it. Gosh.”…
In his Florida political career, Bush sometimes stumbled over racial questions. During his unsuccessful 1994 campaign for governor, when asked what he would do for black people, Bush said “nothing.” He intended that to be a comment about higher standards and economic growth benefiting everyone, but it came off as a gaffe. Then, as now, Bush felt burned by the language of “political correctness.”
My emphases, because I suspect JEB! got his lazy tongue tangled over the memorized “pro life” mottoes he’s been feeding the fetus fetishists for his entire career, and the inborn Bush Clan contempt for all those puling humanoids who are Not Bushes — with a side order of blatant racism, of course. Catholic convert or not, all the anti-abortion pandering is just the highly-processed junk food demanded by “voters”, ugh, in return for their temporary allegiance.
Video and a pretty good #BlackLivesMatter analogy at the link.

If you compel doctors to take Medicare, then you have to develop a whole regulatory scheme to ensure that all doctors and all Medicare and non-Medicare patients are treated fairly, without overly diminishing incentives for people to become doctors. That’s a huge undertaking.

@Alex: Medicare pays less almost all the time. Medicare also pays with little to no hassle within about 30 days of claim submission. Medicare is VERY good about distributing the money and also has very efficient claims resolution processes. So many doctors accept them simply because they pay.

Meanwhile, have you guys been following the saga of the dead guy from Pacific Palisades (ritzy LA enclave), one Mr. Jeffrey Alan Lash, who was found dead, decomposing in his car? Responding police found — in the home he shared with his fiancee/girlfriend — over 1,200 guns — many of them military grade — and 6.5 tons of ammunition. Also machetes, bomb-making materials the police have already exploded because too unstable to transport, other weapons, $230,000 in cash; the guy may have have an amphibious car stashed somewhere …
Assuming Mr. Lash may been of pale complexion, in life, or this would get a lot more national play. Has it been reported? All I hear about is Trump, Trump, Trump and now those nice fellows protecting our military from Muslims ….
No idea how this guy came by his money. He’d convinced his girlfriend/fiancee that he was secret squirrel working for some clandestine government agency; he died of cancer earlier this month and instructed her to leave his body in a car on the street, for his secret squirrel contacts to deal with, and go into hiding for a few weeks. She did, but, rather unpleasantly, returned to find him still dead in the car a few weeks later. (Neighbors were oblivious.)
So: all that lovely ammosexual swag featured in numerous stories and reports, and now gun dealers are ringing up to acquire same. Some of it is no longer legally saleable in California (he’s got at least one 50 calibre weapon) …
And this gem from the latest LA Times story:
In earlier stories, we learned that Mr. Lash and Ms. Nebron took most of their meals at a local Italian restaurant, Cafe Nostra. This may have been because they shut off water and gas to their home; that’s undetermined. He ate raw filet mignon; sometimes did not allow her to eat while he was dining, and got nervous if a camera came out. He told neighbors he conducted night swimming missions to Catalina Island.
And this guy acquired over 1,200 firearms. And 6 tons of ammo. at this home. He may have storage lockers and other sites; police are searching now.
You’d think someone was making this up, but it’s reporting from the LA Times and the small Pacific Palisades local newspaper, which has taken an intense interest in the late Mr. Lash. Neighbors were evacuated, for many hours, once the police found all the ammo and bomb-making equipment. Some rumors that home was in a hoarding situation …
Dateline has to be salivating. Why are we only hearing about the Chattanooga Muslim shooter? Isn’t this kind of, like, news?

Could it have a negative effect on the small but significant pool of actual swing voters?. Sure it could. As a liberal I’m 100% behind their issue. As a Democrat I have other issues that concern me as well. Candidates will have to figure out how to engage a group that wants their issue to be the #1 priority of a party they don’t belong to. @Baud: Re incentives-we should be heavily subsidizing medical education, more than we already do.
As it is, the incentives are fucked. Four years of college, four years of super expensive medical school. Shortest residency is 3 years (internal medicine). Minimum five if you want to be a surgeon. I don’t know what to do about the *time*-we want doctor to be well-trained. Maybe we can shorten college or be more like the UK in that regard.
As for *expense*-$300k for an MD plus 3-7 years of training means you’re going to attract mostly mercenary types who want to make a lot of money. That’s not bad in and of itself, but that gives you a lot of doctors who feel entitled to very high salaries and resistant to change because they spent so much time and money becoming doctors.
My solution would be to make students eligible to apply to med school after 2 years college and go straight to med school (6 years instead of 8). In exchange for free or nearly free education, they are forced to accept Medicare or be on salary. Shorter time, less expense, fewer mercenary/greedy doctors.
