Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Books are my comfort food!

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

The lights are all blinking red.

Second rate reporter says what?

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

People are weird.

Come on, man.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Why Is Sarah Palin Still Relevant?

sarah palin

For some god-forsaken reason we live in a world where Sarah Palin still has a platform. Palin posted a delightful post on her Facebook page comparing Planned Parenthood to the Confederate flag and asking which group “killed more black babies last year?” This comes after the Center for Medical Process, an anti-abortion group, posted “undercover” videos against Planned Parenthood.

Team Blackness talked the waste of space that is Sarah Palin, the smearing campaign of Planned Parenthood by the right, and more of #TheEmptyChair.

@JimBucksbury: No she doesn’t. And at any rate she basically speaks what the Republican Id wants to say so monitoring her is simply a leading indicator of what they are saying and sharing on their facebook pages. This is actually kind of an important thing to realize–when I talk to a non political person about Trump or Palin I’m able to explain why they are significant, why they still have fans and supporters, because I do pay attention to them. They are not going away if we don’t pay attention–they and their party are here to stay, wrecking the country. So we need to keep informed about them and keep holding them and their voters accountable.

African American infant mortality rate in USA is close to what you find in Uruguay and nearly double the rate of white infant mortality.

And that is mainly due to infant mortality rates of African Americans in the Old Confederacy where they don’t believe in a federal role in health care.

They don’t. They care about anything that can be used as a cudgel against liberals. They care about the concept of black babies, because they can be used to attack Planned Parenthood, but they don’t give a damn about the living, breathing article.

@Amir Khalid: You’ve probably left earlier threads, but it appears that Russia has just vetoed the UNSC resolution calling for an international tribunal on the MH17 incident. It’s now clear why: they know who was responsible. Red Star TV (the Russian army TV) is reporting that it was a CIA agent named David L Stern, working as a reporter for the BBC. Thought you should know.

For those who are concerned, the former NBA commish is David J Stern, not L.

Yeah, but that platform is shrinking by the day…most candidates run from her endorsement, she even had to close shop on her own channel (I guess it’s not quite the grifting opportunity she thought it was).

Just ’cause the Donald would like to “tap” her doesn’t mean she’s relevant…remember, he is around 70, she probably appears young to him. And even billionaires have bucket lists…O_O

    I found this interesting:

    http://boingboing.net/2015/07/28/how-will-sarah-palin-fund-her.html

It breaks down where all the money goes:

Less than 4% of SarahPAC’s overall expenditures went to candidate contributions, even though the PAC’s appeals for funds makes a big deal about how contributions will be used to “fight against the liberals like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders,” or “stop the illegal invasion,” or help “defund and investigate Planned Parenthood.”

Sarah is burning through that PAC money:

$230,250 on consultants, including $80,500 to longtime aide and PAC treasurer Timothy Crawford

$139,932 on direct mail, produced by conservative fundraising firm HSP Direct

$128,482 on postage, printing, and related supplies

$82,213 on travel and accommodations, including airfare, hotels, car and SUV rentals, travel agents, and taxis. The Waldorf Astoria in New York City ($4,562) and Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas ($797) were two particularly pricy line items. The $3,854 SarahPAC paid a New York–based limousine company came on Feb. 19, right after Palin appeared at the staging of Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary special, where she sat in the audience next to musician Taylor Swift.

$48,000 on speech writing, mostly to Aries Petra Consulting, a small limited liability company registered in Virginia and based in Los Angeles

$37,354 on Internet fundraising through Austin, Texas–based Harris Media LLC, which works for numerous conservative politicians

Brilliant mememarketing shows Sarah is still relevant. You better get with the Trumpmentum. Trumpublicans agree:

Patrick Murray, Director of the Monmouth University poll, said his surveys show Trump’s negatives declining from 55 percent in June to 41 percent in July.

“I’ve never seen that kind of a change in just one month for someone who was so well-known already,” Murray said. “Usually it takes a scandal or heroic act for people to change their underlying opinions that dramatically. All he did was announce he’s running for president.”
    …
“This has gone on longer than I expected,” said Murray. “I though after the McCain comments, voters would start looking at other candidates, but he’s survived. I think it’s evidence he’s really tapping into something.”

I’m guessing that the number of black babies saved by Planned Parenthood’s low-cost prenatal care and well baby care programs dwarfs the number of abortions requested by black women, but of course forced birthers don’t want to discuss the other women’s healthcare that PP does since it would show that there is a major gap in women’s healthcare that no one else is willing to try and fill.

    July 29, 2015 at 4:07 pm

    @proterozoic:
That is the most important factor to them. A major racist belief is that black women are too stupid, lazy, lustful, and irresponsible to exercise any restraint in having sex, resulting in an epidemic of unwed mothers. Since black women are so lazy and selfish, they would rather get abortions than plan ahead and avoid getting pregnant. The other side of this coin is that they believe a lot of black women are getting pregnant so they can collect bigger welfare checks, but there’s no conflict in these beliefs because racists don’t expect blacks to make logical, consistent decisions.

This isn’t, and never was about the babies. In this case, it’s about painting black women as murderers whose own lives are valueless because they’re murderers, white Christians as being the only truly good people whose lives should be worried about, and Planned Parenthood as a group that spends the money of good white Christians helping blacks lead easy, wasteful, criminal, evil, animal lives.

EDIT – I want to make a disclaimer very clear: I am using disgusting, harsh descriptions because conservatives believe disgusting, harsh things. I find these opinions loathsome, but it’s important to not give racists fig leaves of decency they don’t deserve.

    @Germy Shoemangler:
Palin might or might not believe her own bullshit, but she is first and foremost a selfish, short-sighted grifter (who got lucky). This is the woman who brought her family in to steal everything from the green room of a fashion show she was invited to as a special guest. If she’d waited two hours, they’d have given her that stuff. The show organizers were horrified and disgusted.

I for one hope both Sarah Palin and abortion are front and center in the eventual nominee’s campaign. Has a GOP nominee been upfront about it since Reagan? Old man Bush used the “my wife is pro-choice” wink-and-nod, I agree with the wingers who didn’t believe Bob Dole gave a fuck (and who booed Colin Powell at the ’96 convention), Junior was reported (quietly) to have two different paragraphs in his stump speech on abortion, one for cameras, the other for invitation only events, McCain and Romney, both I think from the elder Bush/Dole model, pretty much mumbled and changed the subject.

Edited. This graf says it all:

The New York Times investigated this discrepancy, quoting leading forensic toxicologist Dr. Nikolas P. Lemos, who stated: “If you’re a woman with all that T.H.C. parked in your fatty tissue, after death it leaks out and contaminates the adjacent blood, so it artificially elevates the measured concentrations in blood.” According to Dr. Lemos, the report’s findings reveal “nothing about impairment, nothing about use in jail, nothing about when she took it.”</blockquote

By providing affordable perinatal care, how many Black lives does Planned Parenthood save from abortions that would otherwise be financially coerced or medical problems that would be overlooked because of the institutional anti-Black racism in our society, often represented by the Stars and Bars?

Probably a long time, but like Krauthammer, Will and Kristol, she’ll be someone that that part of the American public that doesn’t follow politics closely (i.e. the majority) doesn’t even remember. Her days as the Republican Party’s pop star are gone.

No, conservatives, shut the fuck up about slavery! You were wrong before you even opened your mouth because you’re ignorant, arrogant, and your one Black friend doesn’t respect you enough to tell you the truth to your face.

Yeah, that’s the other thing that pisses me off about this. It’s not JUST about dissing abortion – it’s just as much about minimizing the Confederacy, and a middle finger to those people who (after 150 years) are finally discussing it honestly because hey, you people are so silly, that was long ago and who cares, when what you should really be caring about is THIS?

I’ll just go right out and say that is not a direct transcript of a native English speaker; no native speaker talks that way. It appears to have been translated from another language by a somebody who has English as a second language. I suppose it’s possible that it is a result of a double translation, but no American would speak the way the person in that “transcript” does.

People are how can he vote Republican?

Honestly I am not totally sure but he does. Palin was just too much for my mother. You get a Trump and maybe the same thing happens with my father. Sure the Republicans might be shoring up their 18-22% base of the Tea Party but they are losing people like my parents.

Weird how the woman disappears completely isn’t it? It’s like that in the statutes too. Poof! She’s gone and it’s all the physician and the child. They mention the mother again at the end but only as an afterthought- if she’s dying she must be considered.

She should say what she really thinks. If she believes babies were killed then she believes the mother(s) did it. They’re grown women. They walked in there under their own steam and they have all the agency of any other adult human being. But she can’t say that because that would be admitting women have the capacity to make a choice.

@Mnemosyne (iPhone): Perhaps this has been answered already, but how would one confirm those numbers in Sarah Palin’s tweet? Is 90,000 aborted AA babies a good number? Seriously unless we, all of us, don’t coalesce and pushback against the smearing of Planned Parenthood it will go the way of ACORN. How can we fight back in a meningful visible way, aside from donations to Naral, etc.

It’s not enough to say Palin is irrelevant as she can still do damage. Fox, Palin, et al, are just demonizing a worthwhile woman’s reproductive health resource.

    @Gimlet: Yeah, um.

The transcripts purport to be of telephone conversations between David Stern and some unidentified person. The supposedly linked audio files are actually just one audio file, of the purported July 4 conversation, no audio of the others. Except the party in that conversation that is, according to that transcript, David L Stern, sounds nothing at all like the David Stern that has actually appeared on BBC, and is easily findable on YouTube. And the transcript is not actually what either of the two people said in the conversation, according to the audio file — it’s reasonably close, but far from exact. And the “columnist” Caleb Gilbert who posted those transcripts on pressbox doesn’t appear to actually exist anywhere in print.

So I’m going to call BS, if that’s OK with you, before you give gin-based cocktails a bad name here.

@Roger Moore: Should have read all the comments. As I pointed out to Gimlet, I listened to the one audio file available, and the transcript isn’t what they are actually saying. The audio sounds like actual English speakers, the transcript seems like it’s been translated to Russian and back.

@dww44: 90k would be roughly 2% of all live births in the US. And African Americans make up just over 13% of the population. Assuming births are uniformly distributed across all racial demographics (they’re likely not, but for sake of argument), that means roughly 520k of those births are to AA women. So 90k would mean nearly 20% of all AA pregnancies are being terminated. Pure, unadulterated bullshit. Of course, we’d expect nothing less from Failin’ Palin (or whomever is feeding her that number).
