Firedoglake is no more. I have mixed feelings about FDL. Lots of great writers, like TBogg and Marcy Wheeler and David Dayen, got their start there. But some of Jane Hamsher’s stunts were a bit much.
I like to think Balloon Juice is still going strong. And on that, note, if anyone is interested, I’d like to propose a Balloon Juice meet-up in DC next Thursday. I’ll be in the northwest, kind of near the zoo, so Adams-Morgan would probably work. Any suggestions for good spots?
raven
AMF FDL.
Hal
They were just too pure for me. Hamsher seemed to think Obama failing as President would usher in a new golden age.
Punchy
I’d say it died about 7 years ago. Perhaps it stayed on life support in a coma with dialysis, but its function as a real social and political blog flatlined with the ’08 Election cycle….
JPL
@Hal: Was she hoping that her buddy Grover Norquist could gain a cabinet seat?
Tommy
Well if you are going to be at the zoo might as well go to the Zoo Bar. It is literally across the street. Makes a pretty good burger. If you are in Adams-Morgan and it is after happy hour Chief Ike’s Mambo Room is a wonderful place. You can dance a little like nobody is looking and fit right in.

with the exception of previous bloggers like tbogg, man, fuck that place.

Now the country only has the John Coles of the left to deal with! Whither the ship of state?
Edit: time for blog ethics panel? And will Cole have any comment?
Edit2: And time to short magic unicorns and hidden wonderful ponies? Not sure what the market play is for that.

Perhaps in honor of FDL and Bernie Sanders, you should discuss at the meeting bringing a real progressive FP’er to the blog.
Or at least get John to post more, since he’s the only liberal left here.
ice weasel
Uh, please correct me if I am wrong but didn’t all those writers start out on their own and were later co-opted by FDL? I seem to remember reading TBogg before FDL but maybe I am wrong.
Anyway, FDL, never my thing. Not my flavor of writing or politics with some notable exceptions. I seem recall despises the formatting that they did to TBogg when he joined them. So, no loss in my opinion. I wish no Hamser any ill will and hope she continues with a complete recovery from her surgery but don’t really care if she makes back into the political spectrum or not.

@srv: Well, Jane seems to have some free time on her hands…

Never read FDL, but it seemed kinda exciteable and purity pony, from second hand stories.
YES! to the DC meetup. I don’t know the Zoo/Adams Morgan area well anymore, so hoping other Juicers will have a good suggestion. Place has to have wifi, so we can blog away (and try to keep drinks off the keyboard).
Slightly dreading the “debate”, since it will be Obama-bashing all night, and I could watch cable TV if I was up for that … I get tired of the lies that Obamacare is a disaster! and the Iran deal is even worse!
Sick of these asshats.

Maybe something either around VC Ctr, or (please) Clarendon? Although as Elizabelle will remind me we do need to hit Murphy’s again. Closer in to the zoo, there’s Circa at DuPont which would be good.

Sure, have a DC meet-up when I’m on vacation. (In central FL, down in Betty Cracker’s neck of the
woodsswamps, actually.)Used to be a Greek place up near the zoo that my wife and I really liked. Unfortunately, it went out of business a few years back, and we no longer have a regular lunch spot up thataway. Too bad, since we like taking the kid to the zoo.

@peach flavored shampoo: Not to put too fine a point on it, but a commenter that goes by “peach flavored shampoo” has difficulty understanding the naming of FireDogLake?

Even during the dark days of the Bush administration, I found FDL to be intolerable. While the political views were not any more liberal than mine, the emotional environment there was kind of wingnutty.

@peach flavored shampoo: I believe that is a mystery, and reason for the blog ethics scandal panel I mentioned.

FDL rose rapidly (as did Greenwald around the same time) but as Punchy suggests, it’s been a fringe-y shadow of itself for a long time now.
(TBogg was recruited by FDL, and stuck around there longer than most of his readers expected: his old blogspot blog’s still around, too.)
kc
Fond memories of FDL: Many years ago I uttered a mildly dissenting response to Jerilyn Merritt in the comments section (Jerilyn was defending her close personal friend, Jeff Goldstein) and Christy deleted my comment, and then jumped all over me with a hysterically overwrought response. “I will not stand for any bashing of Jerilyn!” or something like that. Since my comment had been deleted, it left the impression that I had said something awful to Merritt, which was NOT the case. I was pretty taken aback, but then began to see a pattern in how FDL treated commenters – basically, the site’s main bloggers and monitors brooked no disagreement whatsoever, no matter how innocuous.
Speaking of Merritt, years later she was to let her own commenters drag Trayvon Martin back and forth through mud, even as she deleted any criticism of Zimmerman, so to hell with her.
LAC
Good riddance to purity pouty palaver. R.I.S. FDL.
If you want a place near the zoo, I recommend going up to Cleveland park area: there are several places, but Cleveland park bar & grill, is pretty good food wise and friendly. And I think they got WIFI.

IMHO BJ blog goes strong because, besides the unique and indescribable commenter and troll profile, the blog understands the importance of stories like
Texas Man Hurt When Bullet Ricochets Off Armadillo He Tried To Shoot
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/armadillo-shooting-texas
The story also mentions a recent similar attempt gone wrong in Georgia that was IMO, really a plot to get a mother-in-law.
Edit: and or course, the front pagers. Mayhew was very clever to set this thing up as a long game plot to get a health care wonk blog into mainstream blogdom. And Cracker provides real scoop on Florida phenom.
Edit2: And BJ blog’s way of falling ass backwards into a Top Ten blog list is unique in recorded blog history.

The best thing about Firedoglake (apart from TBogg, of course) was that back when I used to read it, Jane got into a pissing contest with JC about his “Jane Hamshers of the left” comment, and it led me to this blog. I stayed with Balloon Juice, but eventually lost interest in FDL, especially after TBogg left.

Oh lord, I just remembered that my MIL was on a RW kick during the Bush years (because Moooooslims were going to kill all the Jews if we didn’t bomb them first) but flipped back to Dem for Hilary and screamed at my wife on the phone accusing her of voting Obama in the primary. My wife had refused to declare a party preference which means you can’t vote in the primary in Florida, and told her mother that when she’d come down enough to listen. (She refused because she was basically a one issue voter–gay rights–at the time, and wanted to protest the Dems being nominally pro-GLBT but not actually doing anything about it.)

I realize I’m coming in late here and haven’t read the rest of the comments, but I just have to jump in and say:
TBOGG DID NOT GET HIS START AT FDL!!!!!
He had a GREAT FABULOUS STUPENDOUS blog of his own before he moved it over to FDL. You didn’t have to be registered to leave a comment so absolutely anybody could jump into the conversation. And it got WILD, in a fun way. Once he signed on to FDL and only FDL-registered people could comment, 90% of the fun disappeared from his posts. The FDL commenters were a singulary humorless crowd. I was happy to hear that he’d gotten out of there.

@eemom: I’d actually mentioned TRex in a different thread. The fact he was kicked out was the first clue that this place was taking a dark turn, and I left shortly thereafter. Fortunately.

I have to (now, sadly) admit I was kind of a “Kill The Bill” dead-ender prior to the ACA being passed. I really didn’t like the idea of what I thought the ACA would turn into, and though I’d still say it is probably not perfect – and it is definitely not Single Payer for All – the numbers seem to suggest that it is legitimately a good piece of legislation for a lot of people, which at the end of the day, is what everyone who supported health care reform wanted.
I did not mind that Jane Hamsher was a bit more brash than some others; I think in general that “The Left” (whatever that means to you) needs to be way more blunt, frank, and telling it like it fucking is instead of being milquetoast about defending our collective principles and attacking the insane right wing.
But the absolute minute she talked about forming a truly unholy alliance with Grover fucking Norquist, I was done. Fuck Grover, and fuck every single shred of his “NO TAXES EVAR” mantra.
Yeah. I don’t miss FDL. I’m not dancing on its proverbial digital grave, but I’m not going to miss it at all.

I’m mainly a lurker – prob haven’t commented in at least 2 years. But I’d suggest staying on the red line although the best nightlife has moved east off if the green line. Personally not that much of a fan of zoo bar but I formed that opinion 15 years ago so maybe they’d be good. Cleveland Park Bar and Grill, divey sports bar, atomic bar and grill, although it may not be accessible for persons with disabilities so maybe not, possibly Medium Rare. Had a fine brunch there but it might be too much of a restaurant. I don’t know woodley park anymore it’s always been more restaurants than bar space. The Gin Joint which is above New Heights restaurant (very good) gets good reviews tho I’ve never been. Guessing a bit expensive. Then there’s Dupont. I like Thomas Foolery but it’s small. Cafe Citron can be fun. I think they did a nice hips.org fundraiser there. See if they’ll set aside upstairs. If you’re looking for a dive Lucky Bar is between DuPont and Farragut North. Fox and hounds can be welcoming (gay and straight) and very old style. Not sure if they still have country/punk mix on jukebox. Just random ideas. I’ll try to make it.

Tbogg @ FDL. A classic for the ages:
Let me see if I can explain it this way:
Every year in Happy Gumdrop Fairy-Tale Land all of the sprites and elves and woodland creatures gather together to pick the Rainbow Sunshine Queen. Everyone is there: the Lollipop Guild, the Star-Twinkle Toddlers, the Sparkly Unicorns, the Cookie Baking Apple-cheeked Grandmothers, the Fluffy Bunny Bund, the Rumbly-Tumbly Pupperoos, the Snowflake Princesses, the Baby Duckies All-In-A-Row, the Laughing Babies, and the Dykes on Bikes. They have a big picnic with cupcakes and gumdrops and pudding pops, stopping only to cast their votes by throwing Magic Wishing Rocks into the Well of Laughter, Comity, and Good Intentions. Afterward they spend the rest of the night dancing and singing and waving glow sticks until dawn when they tumble sleepy-eyed into beds made of the purest and whitest goose down where they dream of angels and clouds of spun sugar.
You don’t live there.
Grow the fuck up.

Up for DC meet up. I don’t comment here very often at all, but I do read pretty much all of it. Would be very much interested in putting faces to “names.”
