They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Somehow or another I have done something to my desktop pc so that the keyboard is no longer recognizing the bottom row of keys. I have no idea if I somehow remapped everything, so I am now just doing a system recovery, which apparently takes eleventy fucking years to do.

    Did you try simply shutting down and restarting the system (i.e.not just a soft restart) before resorting to system restore? The top row (numbers, symbols) on my daughter’s laptop KB began misbehaving – producing random letter output, and before going to system restore or replacing the KB (which BTW is much cheaper and simpler on a desktop than a laptop) – I tried doing a complete (hard) shutdown of the system, and that cured whatever random glitch was causing the misbehavior on the KB.

    YMMV whether this will work in your case – but it’s worth a try.

    @Amir Khalid:

    Did you try plugging in a spare keyboard?

    I concur that is also an option you should try – I had a desktop KB go bad on me (it would intermittently freeze and refuse to communicate with the motherboard) – and swapping in a replacement (which has worked flawlessly for weeks now) proved the flaw was with the KB.

    Rachel is doing a recap of the failures of Katrina. Michael Brown wrote a whiny recap on the failures in Politico and didn’t include himself in those failures. In fact the worse thing during that time, to him, was that he was blamed. Not any mention of the deaths or those trapped for days without food and water.

    for future reference, you might want to check if your local library system employs a tech support person to help patrons with computer issues, or else gets volunteer teens from the high school to come in certain afternoons to help.

    Also, it could have easily been a faulty USB connection or run-down batteries on a wireless keyboard.

    Put the keyboard in the dishwasher on the top rack, no soap. Run it through a cycle, but turn off the drying part because the heat will cook it to oblivion.

    Shake it out and let it sit out for about a week to dry. After a week, plug it in again.

    Possible diagnostics:

    – Unplug the keyboard from its current port and plug it into a new port (assuming it’s USB). If it’s a wireless, plug the receiver into a different port.
    – As mentioned above, if you have another keyboard knocking around somewhere, try that, or maybe procure a cheap USB keyboards (pretty sure you can get one for ten bucks, and it’s always better to have a backup and not need it than vice versa).
    – If your keyboard has customization software, try uninstalling it, rebooting, and then reinstalling.

    Losing one row of keys seems consistent with a failure of hardware instead of software. Thankfully, we’re not in the days of the Apple II or the Commodore 64 where the keyboard was an integral part of the computer.

    John,
    This sounds more like a hardware failure. I cannot think of any way you could accidentally remap any row of keys. If this is a laptop, don’t even think about repair yourself (if you do, get a pic of the keyboard. get several. )
