Just got home, after having dinner with my mom. We were in the living room talking when the Sunday evening news came on and the lead story was Bernie Sanders is now considered a serious threat to Hillary Clinton. My mom looked up and said if Sanders beat Hillary she would stay home and not vote for that old ass white guy. I then tried the Obot guilt trip on her; Supreme Court, Obamacare legacy, etc. She said she didn’t care, she be dammed if she was going to vote for another old ass white guy.
I then realized that this whole Bernie momentum was built around polling in two of the whites states in America, New Hampshire is #5 and Iowa is #3 (both above 90%). If he wins the Democratic primary, the Democrats will lose the general election, because African Americans and women will not vote for him in the numbers needed to win the general election.
@Loviatar: It’s over a year to the election. Your mom may mean it, because for a lot of older ladies there’s been a real desire to see the election of a female president in their lifetimes. But if it came down to the wire a year from now, she might not be so committed to not voting as she says.
Or she could just have hit her “fuck all y’alls” wall.
Just got back from a bike ride + dinner in Ventura. Because it was hot and I’m out of shape, I only made it about 9 miles before I had to turn back. Then we had dinner at Anacapa Brewing Company, which is always good. I think I got s little sunburned because I managed to forget my 50 SPF shirt, but hopefully it wasn’t too bad.
@efgoldman: Bernie’s a nice idea, but not practical. While I’m not the biggest fan of dynasty politics which is what Hillary is, she’s way way way better then anything the other side has to offer, and sadly the Democratic Party side too.
I suppose there is no telling either way. I tend to agree with you, but who really knows? Your mom says now she won’t vote for Sanders but when the rubber hits the road…who knows?
I go back and forth wondering if Sanders is George McGovern or if Clinton is Martha Coakley…fever visions either way. I’ll vote for whoever wins and proudly, but I think Clinton is the best choice. I also think she has been unfairly painted as cold, calculating and unfeeling. And I think she has been much better on the specifics of what she wants to do and how. Her proposals for drug treatment and reducing the cost of higher education seem actually doable. Sanders calling for free college doesn’t seem like a realistically doable proposal. Even less so his call for single payer. Is he then proposing to repeal the PPACA and replace it with Medicare/Medicaid for all? If so, how exactly does he propose doing that? I would prefer a candidate who will protect the current law and strengthen it. What I would really like is to see one of them propose adding dental care to the PPACA.
Another thing that bothers me with all of them is the notion that only a college education will be the ticket to a “good job.” Not everyone can or should go to college. A society needs all kinds of workers. I support making higher education affordable, but if Sanders was actually a socialist I would expect him to talk more about increased vocational and technical schools and somehow trying to increase the societal value of blue collar work. Let’s make working with your back and hands just has honorable as working at a desk.
With the minimum wage, instead of a somewhat pointless argument over whether it should be 12 dollars or 15, I would prefer to see them push to establish a number and then tie that amount to the Inflation Index with automatic increases the same as SSI. Otherwise the same fight happens again in 10 years when either the 12 or 15 dollar number is too small.
I honestly don’t see much difference between Clinton or Sanders. Either one is fine and neither one is to the left of me, but whoever it is…they better not fucking lose.
I find the idea of a former 2 term President being the First Husband really strange.
I think it helps insulate Hillary from the “who wears the pants (suits) in this family” crap that would dog a woman, if her husband put his big shot career on hold – like Mrs. Ted Cruz has done for Sen. Cruz’s run – to support his wife.
She hit her “fuck all y’alls” wall around the time Trump got going. She is from the tristate area (NJ, NY, CT) and she always knew him as a bigot and closet racist and to see him supported in this way really pissed her off.
No chance. It’s all noise in the slowest news time of the year.
Agree, but its been disappointing to see a summer of non-stop character assassination against Hillary from supposed fellow Democrats. If these Democrats would make their arguments on actual policy differences, I could understand, but its been mostly a whisper campaign attacking her on Republican talking points.
I also think she has been unfairly painted as cold, calculating and unfeeling.
Its because she is a woman, the sexism in this country is only surpassed by its racism.
– A man is considered thoughtful and reflective, a woman is cold, calculating and unfeeling.
– A man is forceful and in charge, a woman is a bitch.
And I think she has been much better on the specifics of what she wants to do and how. Her proposals for drug treatment and reducing the cost of higher education seem actually doable.
Her policy proposals are well worth the read for those who care about making an informed decision, however most won’t, instead we’ll get the same tired retread comments from the 80’s and 08 updated for today.

However, your mom should think about giving Bernie a chance. He’s a pretty decent guy with real policy proposals of his own. Still the Notorious efg is right, Bernie probably can’t last. The NYT even has an article on how Clinton is building an anti-Bernie firewall in Southern states where his support is weakest.
It’s also worth noting that *if* Bernie is the D nominee, his most likely opponent (IMO) will be Walker, Bush, or Trump. So an old white dude would be President no matter what, so she might as well vote for the least-bad old white dude, meaning Bernie. If that’s not a ringing endorsement, what is?

Sorry, like the rest of the US, for my mom right now, its all about identity politics. Its a woman or she won’t vote, she’s hit her “fuck all y’alls” wall.
the sexism in this country is only surpassed by its racism.
You sure? I’d say it’s the other way around.
No, America is moderately more racist than sexist.
The reason why is everyone has a mother, possibly a sister or some type of female relative. Most Americans do not have a friendship or even a comradely relationship with someone not of their race. Its much easier to be bigoted towards those you don’t feel any personal attachment.
To see this work out in real time, look at the LGBT example. The real tuning point wasn’t Will and Grace or any of the other LGBT friendly TV shows, it was coming out to family and friends. All of a sudden someone you knew or was related to was gay or lesbian and it then became much more difficult to be bigoted towards the LGBT community (G.O.P. Senator Says He Has a Gay Son, and Backs Gay Marriage).
Its moderately more difficult to be sexist towards your female relatives than it is to be racist towards your black coworker whose never seen the inside of your car never mind your home.

@Loviatar: Counter-argument: There’s plenty of people have a not-always-logical reaction to “powerful” women — even people who think of themselves as not-sexist.
Remember the old joke about civil rights? “In the South, they don’t care how close you get, as long as you don’t get too high; in the North, they don’t care how high you get, as long as you don’t get too close.” It’s difficult (not impossible, but difficult) to completely disassociate oneself from all (other) members of the female gender, but it’s sadly quite possible to insist that the women surrounding you don’t get “too high”. Look at Donald Trump, insisting he “loves women… cherishes women”. As Hillary said this weekend, “I don’t care if you cherish us, Donald, I want you to respect us.”
And it’s not just Trump, or the rabid ‘mens’ rights activists’. Plenty of otherwise progressive / liberal, socially sensitive men believe they’re all in favor of women’s equality — until there’s a particular woman who tries to avail herself of that equality. Somehow, she’s never the right woman at the right time looking for the right “privilege”. They could totally get behind a woman running for President, but not that horrible overbearing ugly old Shirley Chisholm/Patricia Schroeder/Hillary Clinton with all her baggage! Not in this extremely sensitive political season! Not when it is “more important” to elect the first African-American/Jewish/openly gay/Hispanic/Muslim/Asian/insert-polling-target man president! That’s just — reasonable! Why, oh why, can’t women ever be reasonable?
Your mom isn’t the only woman who’s tired of being reasonable. Especially when the alternatives on offer are not exactly world-beating. Much as I love Bernie Sanders (and would otherwise be willing to take a chance on Martin O’Malley, or even Joe Biden), none of them are a once-in-a-lifetime figure like Barack Obama. He won fair and square in 2008, but his equal is not on offer in 2016. Democratic voters whose only metric is “anyone but Hillary” are not, whatever their professed arguments, actually being reasonable… but I would suspect the vast majority of them are, however innocently, being sexist.
Democratic voters whose only metric is “anyone but Hillary” are not, whatever their professed arguments, actually being reasonable… but I would suspect the vast majority of them are, however innocently, being sexist.
I’m with you 100%, and I am a white guy who is rapidly entering old white guy territory. I see a lot of sexism in many of the objections and comments about Hillary Clinton. And I imagine that women see it much much more clearly. It will only get worse. It’s a gonna be ugly, but I have confidence that Secretary Clinton will come out on top and become President of the United States.

My lab puppy (now 4 months) has been such a good girl (knock wood). However, she is now on bed-rest — possible ACL issues following a walk in the forest with my husband & daughter — and is driving me nuts. She refuses to sit quietly out of her crate (completely understandable), and is very much taking exception to being shut up in her crate. When I sit on her big dog bed with her, with a chew toy, she still does not want to sit still. I don’t imagine she’s any different than any other dog (or person) in that regard — it’s frustrating to be confined to bed-rest. The vet has prescribed an anti-inflammatory w/pain med — I almost wish the pain med weren’t incorporated so she’d feel more inclined to just lay down because it hurts, but of course don’t want her to be in pain.
She’s been a great puppy — no significant chewing problems (again knock wood), but then I’ve been her companion nearly 24/7 to ensure that she is entertained & stays out of trouble. Without a crate & supervision I can only imagine the havoc she’d have wreaked. It’s been a challenge nonetheless, like having a toddler again — and I am well past that with no desire to go back to it. She is so beautiful, though, and 99% of people she meets are amazed at how well-behaved she is — may that never end!
