    For once I went to bed at a decent hour (around midnight) and was sleeping like a baby for a change until one of my idiot dogs started barking her head off just before 4 AM. The rest of my family could sleep through a bomb, so it was up to me to check it out. There was nothing out there. Psychosomatic cats, squirrels or burglars, I guess.

    Stupid fucking dog! Still, it’s not like that particular dog to bark at nothing. The other, yes — we assume she’s barking at random pieces of dandelion fluff floating through the air. The dog who barked is generally the more trustworthy of the two. Maybe she really did scare something away.

    A camera operator for a Hungarian nationalist television channel closely linked to the country’s far-right Jobbik party has been filmed kicking two refugee children and tripping up a man at the border hotspot of Rőszke on Tuesday.

    Petra László of N1TV was filming a group of refugees running away from police officers, when a man carrying a child in his arms ran in front of her. László stuck her leg out in front of the man, causing him to fall on the child he was carrying. He turned back and remonstrated with László, who continued filming.

    How these people manage to live with themselves, I have no idea.

    @raven: We have a loaf of French country bread from Independent bakery in the kitchen, so no Big City for me this morning, though it is my favorite place to have breakfast. The weather coming in this weekend is supposed to be amazing–I love sitting on their patio.

    @Anne Laurie: My sister’s sheltie barks at everything, but it’s the howling along with her 2-year-old daughter’s tantrums that, as merely the visiting sister/aunt, I find sort of hilarious.

    (ETA: I realize this is not nice of me. But damn if that dog doesn’t hit pitch and duet with the cranky baby.)

    @raven: I love that picture. I grew up with a black cocker (English cocker). She was a sweet, sweet dog.

    It’s always nice to have a home away from home. We get our lunch there often enough that they give us a gift certificate at Christmas.

    @raven: It just cracks me up when dogs howl! Our Patsy Marie used to howl at the songs played over the loudspeaker by ice cream trucks when she was a pup, but she stopped when she got older. I guess maybe her ears were more sensitive then?

    @raven: Matthew is a nice guy. My husband is the one who usually goes by and picks up lunch, but we come in for dinner on occasion, and Elena is always great when I call her with some sort of last-minute catering request for the historical society.

    The new season begins in NYC. Lots of ways to spend money on the theater, especially on revivals. Cloud 9, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me. Relieved that I will feel no guilt in missing Laurie Metcalf performance in the stage version of Misery. Love her, but not about to part with my Social Security to pay Bruce Willis so he can take acting lessons.

    United Airlines chief executive officer Jeff Smisek stepped down “effective immediately” on Tuesday with the company citing an ongoing federal corruption investigation into the company.

    The airline is under investigation over whether it improperly sought to influence officials at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in a scandal that has embarrassed Republican presidential hopeful Chris Christie.

    United also announced that its executive vice president of communications and government affairs and its senior vice president of corporate and government affairs had stepped down.

    According to the filing, Smisek will receive a payment of $4.875m as severance, in addition to a portion of his performance bonuses received in 2013, 2014 and 2015, which are still outstanding. He will also remain eligible for his bonus this year. In exchange, he is subject to a non-disparagement clause and a two-year-long non-competition agreement in his termination deal. He will also “hold in strict confidence any confidential information related to the companies”.

    Our malamute mix would talk. When we got back from a trip, it sounded just like “I love you.” And when we made our video to be accepted as a NewTek dealer, he successfully said, “Newtek.”

    @Betty Cracker: I know you spend all day looking at screens, and so do I, and they fill our heads with blue light and our bodies don’t get the GOTOBED signal.

    Wearing amber tinted glasses, even cheap sunglasses, at sundown can make a huge difference. I also have f.lux on my laptop. My favorite reading app, Oyster, has a similar sequence which ties into sundown in my area and tints my reading screen red instead of blue.

    There’s tons of research now that staring at TVs, computers, or handhelds will bring on serious insomnia. With the blue light blocking and a sleep mask I love, my sleep has gone from awful to incredible.

    It’s very easy to try.

    @WereBear: Thank you. I don’t think my chronic insomnia is screen-related since its onset predates the Internet, but I’m sure staring at a screen all day for work and then in the evening for leisure probably doesn’t help. An easy fix is worth a shot!

    @BillinGlendaleCA: We watch Netflix or occasionally Hulu and that’s about it. I love Rachel but I’m always doing other things in rooms away from the TV. However, she is an awesome force and it would be a terrible shame if they yank her.

    I suspect she has the best ratings of anyone, though.

    Plunderbund has heard from multiple sources that Republicans on the Franklin County Board of Elections (BOE) have discussed hiring David Hansen, John Kasich’s disgraced school choice chief, to run the county’s early voting center. The voting center is co-run by one Republican employee and one picked by the Democrats on the BOE.
    Hansen was forced to resign from his position with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) in mid-July after it was revealed that he illegally altered data on an official state report in order to improve the rankings of some large charter school sponsors. The illegal tampering was confirmed in a release of public records by the Ohio Department of Education. We have made all of the documents available here.

    Great. Theyr’e appointing a serial data-manipulator who is married to Kasich’s campaign chief to a Bd of Elections. I know he needed a crony-job after his two year stint cooking the books on charter schools but this is ridiculous.

    Our 7 yr old Sam didn’t want to stay in outdoor kennel when her pal died at 13 and has slept in our bedroom since that sad day. She was very happy when we got a Sam puppy 2 years ago and took on protective, mother role right away as if saying, “She’s my baby”.

    I just watched video of our young one behind my husband in easy chair with her front legs draped over his neck, howling and crooning her happiness he was home. Sweet.

    I’ve decided anything that comes out of the OHDOE is complete bullshit.     @raven: They never fail to surprise me.

    I’ve had a beloved dog die and thought for sure that the remaining dog would be grieving, but he seemed light as air, almost as though he knew his friend was in a better place after a long illness. And I’ve had the reverse happen. One cocker developed skin allergies and a gimpy leg after his dog companion died and the vet wasn’t able to resolve either issue. After about 6 months I brought another dog home and the limp immediately disappeared and the skin condition cleared up.

    My second cocker, Mellon, only howled in response to two things: ambulance sirens and my mother’s singing.

    @Amir Khalid: I once went to a Wolf Park where they had a pack of wolves living pretty much in the wild, and on Friday night they had a wolf howl. We would start howling and the wolves would howl with us – it was pretty cool howling with the wolves.
