Bows In The Hood

Here’s something to wash away the taste of last night’s DerpFest extraordinaire.

From the NPR story on Black Violin:

Kevin Sylvester says that when most people see a 6-foot-2-inch, 260-pound black man, they don’t expect him to also be a classically trained violinist. A recent exchange with a woman in an elevator, when he happened to have his instrument with him in its case, drove that point home.

“She’s like, ‘What do you play?’ ” he recalls. “I’m like, ‘I’m a violinist.’ And she was like, ‘Well, obviously you don’t play classical, so what kind of style do you play?’ ”

Sylvester says he explained that while he does have a degree in classical music, he plays all kinds of styles. “She didn’t mean it maliciously,” he says, “but I hope she gets to see us in concert and we can change her perception.”

A not altogether non sequitur.  As I watched this video, I was reminded why I’m a member of the Democratic party.  It’s got a lot of problems, lot of positions espoused by leaders at every level of government at which I wince.  But the party that nominated and elected Barack Hussein Obama is one that can envision an America that looks like the country Sylvester and his co-conspirator in gut and horsehair, Wilner Baptiste, want to help create.  I’ll leave the “and the other party….” half of the duology unmentioned…its would-be leaders said all that was necessary last night.

Plus, and for your early evening pleasure — these guys can play.

What I love most about our resident troll is he seems to see magical superhero results in Bush gaffes that simply make the “kick me” sign on his person more insistent. #hekeptussafe just begs the litany of failure Charlie Pierce so elegantly laid out. It’s as if Jeb? wants to tell his opponents exactly where and how hard to hit his glass jaw.

Truly impressive. I’ve never seen such a touted candidate so thoroughly consume his own intestines. And I’m old enough (just) to remember that much better man than Jeb?, Ed Muskie, self immolate.

Do you think the typical Ohio, Virginia or Florida swing voter gives a flying shit about Charlie Pierce’s Overwritten Midlife Crisis Blog?

All they remember is the warm fuzzy moments after 9/11–the arm around the firefighter, the bullhorn, “dead or alive”, “smoke them out”, the policeman’s badge solemnly held before the Joint Session as Bush pledges to bring the terrorists to justice and keep further attacks from happening. Even Trump knew it was fruitless to try to counterattack 9/11–Hillary will be portrayed as a calculating, heartless bitch scoring political points off of a national tragedy if she even tries.

Well, back on topic, I have to say that it wouldn’t occur to me that someone carrying a violin case couldn’t be playing classical. Nearly everyone who plays violin (as opposed to fiddle, even if they really are the same thing, but it’s a different tradition) starts off doing classical because that’s where the repertory is.

I don’t know. Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata was originally dedicated to a black violinist, George Bridgetower. They had an argument, and Ludie switched the dedication to Rodolphe Kreutzer.

You seem to harbor the illusion that the country is still in the same place we were in Sept 2001, still in shock & wanting to pull together & support each other.

Guess what? Now we know all the warnings ignored, the months spent chasing a new Cold War, Ashcroft telling his staff “no-one say the name Al-Qaeda to me again”, losing Bin Laden in Tora Bora, the determination to find a reason to attack Iraq, “I’m just not that worried about where Bin Laden is; I don’t spend time thinking about him”, the lies about WMDs along with the inexcusable jokes about not finding them (nope, not over here!), C-130’s flying pallet loads of billions in cash into Iraq to be pissed away along with the lives & health of so many of our military people, the appalling disregard for the needs of our returning vets and their families.

Add to that the complete meltdown of the economy, with Duh-bya conspicuously absent & unable to comprehend what was going on as people watched their savings, their homes, and their peace of mind disappear, some of us forever. Do you truly think when anyone sane thinks of the name Bush they remember the doofus on the rubble (the arm around the fireman, etc, till I gag)?? No, we remember that THAT rubble pile was only the first of many he caused. There’s no forgiveness for that clown.

I don’t even understand when people claim that voting for Democrats is the lesser of two evils since I don’t see the Democratic Party as evil. I was proud to vote for President Obama twice and look forward to voting for Secretary Clinton or Senator Sanders. It’s nice to be in a party which has the potential of going from the first Black President to the first woman or Jewish President with no fuss.

It is George P. G. Bush.

The second middle initial, for Garnica (his mom’s maiden name), was suddenly scrubbed and excised* from as much online material as possible** not long after he announced he was exploring running for office in Texas and before he filed as a candidate. Whether out of shame, embarrassment and/or expedience, who knows. But it doesn’t alter what his full name is, nor belie questioning the motivation for the sudden change.

    @Mnemosyne (tablet):

The Bergman Magic Flute movie (made for Swedish TV in the 70s) is brilliant — to my mind an actual great movie as opposed to a filmed opera production.

My favorite recording is one done with early instruments by Drottningholm Court Theatre, on CD. Here it is on youtube:

    youtube.com/watch?v=xssOb9JCdA0

The Queen of the Night (in this recording) is a singer named Sumi Jo, who has made quite a career with this crazy role (it has among the highest notes ever written down for a singer), and Pamina (the princess) is Barbara Bonney, a great sweet-voiced singer.

The plot is hysterical, with strange Freemason imagery, plot twists, goofy sidekicks, and plenty of 18th-C sexism AND racism! (Where evil “Moors” lust after white girls, but everyone knows white girls need to be taken away from their mothers because they need a man’s guidance. Just not a swarthy man, can’t have that.)

Most modern productions cut out (wisely) a lot of the spoken dialog.

One of the great violinists of the late 18th Century was this guy named the Chevalier de St. George, who is sometimes called ‘The Black Mozart’

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevalier_de_Saint-Georges

His father was French and his mother was an enslaved black woman from the Carribbean. He was also the best fencer in Europe, and commanded an all-black regiment after the French Revolution, and was the concermaster of the orchestra that commissioned Haydn’s “Paris” Symphonies.

His music is really very very good, as well. It’s not Mozart, but no one’s is, lol, so that’s not fair.
